JULY 4, 1991

“The Giants were the 1991 Evergreen Minor League champions, posting a 14-3 record for the season. Pictured are Derek Faulkner, Josh Varner, Jarasma Williams, Ben Macks III, James Brown Jr., Jackie Gorum (manager), Kenneth Riley, Joshua Salter, Lee Booker, Jerry Watkins Jr., Lasha Matthews, Latosha Nevlous and Coach Jimmy Brown.”

“Sparta QB Club To Meet – There will be a meeting of the Sparta Academy Quarterback Club July 8 at 7 p.m., according to club president Tony Weaver. Officers for the coming year will be elected during the meeting. The meeting will be held at Sparta Academy.”

“Mabry Covin is presented a plaque of appreciation by Lyeffion Saddle Club Secretary Eva Fialko during the opening ceremonies Saturday at the Lyeffion Saddle Club Horse Show. For over 25 years, Mr. Covin has worked with the saddle club and has assisted many throughout the Lyeffion community.”

JULY 1, 1976

“Troy Kendrick won first place in the 13-year-old punt, pass and kick competition held as part of Oakland Raider quarterback Kenny Stabler’s football camp. Kendrick, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Buddy Kendrick of Repton, attended the weeklong camp at Marion Institute, learning not only from Kenny Stabler but from other professional football players and coaches. He will play junior high football next season at Repton High School.”

“John W. ‘Can Do’ Salter Jr. netted the nine-pound trigger and seven-pound king mackeral and string of red snappers on June 25 while fishing off Her Majesty II, near Destin, Fla.”

“This big one didn’t get away. Rusty Price, son of Mr. and Mrs. Waynard Price, now living in Tallahassee, caught the big bass on a recent visit home.”

“Plans are well on the way to being finalized for the State of Alabama Bicentennial Domino Tournament, to be held in Andalusia starting June 16.
“Sponsored by the Andalusia Rotary Club, the tournament is designed to pick the ‘best of the best’ and be the first of an annual program which the Rotary Club hopes will become a national contest to select the best domino players in the nation each year.
“The games, expected to involve several hundred participants, will be staged at the Lurleen B. Wallace State Junior College student center in Andalusia.”

JULY 4, 1946

“Evergreen defeated Flomaton 7 to 2 Thursday on the local field. The Greenies record now stands at twelve wins and one loss.
“By holding Flomaton to four hits and two runs, Wendall Hart chalked up his eighth win of the season. Although the Greenies were held hitless for three innings, they opened up in the fourth with one run followed by four in the fifth and two in the eighth.
“Otis Johnson, recently discharged from the Navy, played his first game with the Greenies Thursday. Edsel Johnson, brother of Otis, is now leading the Greenies in batting.
“Umpires: Hyde and White.”

JULY 2, 1931

“LARGE RATTLER KILLED NEAR HEAR SATURDAY: Robert Sims killed a large rattlesnake a short distance beyond Fairview Service Station Saturday afternoon. The reptile had 17 rattles and was one of the largest seen in this locality lately. Another one not quite so large was killed near the same spot a few days before by another person.”
