SEVEN YEARS AGO
SEPT. 8, 2005

“Hillcrest’s freshman fullback, Terados Wilson, and Sparta Academy junior halfback Chase Brown are The Courant’s Players of the Week. Wilson, piled up 138 yards rushing on 12 carries and scored two touchdowns last Friday to help the Jaguars defeat Choctaw County, 34-22, last Friday. Brown collected 83 yards on 17 rushes last Friday to help Sparta pile up 263 rushing yards in a 35-6 loss to Kingwood Academy.”

“In a game that was on, then off and then on again last Friday in Evergreen, Hillcrest defeated 4A, Region 1 rival Choctaw County, 34-22.
“’Choctaw County called last Thursday to say they didn’t want to play because of the hurricane and gasoline shortages, so I had it announced on the radio that we were not going to play’ said Hillcrest head coach Arlton Hudson.
“’Then, they called me back Friday morning and said they wanted to play, so I got on the phone and secured the officials and the game was on again.’
“A press release was also put out by the Alabama High School Athletic Association Friday that stated the Hillcrest vs. Choctaw County game would be played Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
“’I don’t know where that information came from,’ said Hudson. ‘We never talked with Choctaw County about playing Saturday.’
“As it turned out, the game was played Friday at its regular scheduled time, 7 p.m., and Hillcrest improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in region play.”

SEPT. 13, 1990

“Jackson Aggies beat Jaguars 29-0: The 1990 Hillcrest Jaguars didn’t open their season the way they did last year, but who would when you graduate 25 seniors. Jackson defeated the Jaguars, 29-0, last Friday night in the season openers for both teams.”

“The Sparta Academy Warriors opened the 1990 season with a 21-6 victory over Escambia Academy Friday night at Stuart-McGehee Field here.
“Steven Gall hauled in a 13-yard pass from Tim Salter for the first touchdown and Mark Watts kicked it to 7-0. Jeff Brundage got loose for 15 yards and a score, but the extra point failed. Jason Williams recovered a fumble in the end zone for the final Warrior touchdown. Tim Salter passed to Gall for the extra two points.
“Brundage picked up 57 yards on 10 carries, Kelvin Salter six tries on 24 yards, Richard Weaver 21 yards on six tries and Tim Salter lost six yards on four tries.
“Tim Salter completed eight passes on 19 attempts for 132 yards and had three interceptions and Gall’s only pass was incomplete. Gall hauled in six receptions for 103 yards and Brundage got two receptions for 29 yards.”

“Conecuh County Game Wardens Tommy Atkins and Steve Lawson reminds all hunters that their current hunting license expired July 31. A new law has changed the expiration date on hunting licenses from Sept. 30 to July 31.”

SEPT. 11, 1975

“The Lyeffion High School Yellow Jackets edged the Conecuh County High Blue Devils 12 to 6 at Lyeffion Stadium, Friday night.
“Steve Anthony paced the Jacket offense as he scored both touchdowns.
“Lyeffion travels to Repton for a 7:30 game with the Repton High Bulldogs on Friday night.”

“The Sparta Academy Warriors turned back a scrappy but out-manned South Butler Academy Raider club 24-12 in Georgiana Friday night.
“Sparta put two scores on the board in the opening quarter. Walker Scott plunged over from the three for the first marker with Jerry Peacock going in for the two-point conversion.
“Gregg Still blocked a Raider punt minutes later and Freddie Sellers grabbed the ball and ran it in from the six to make it 14-0. The conversion attempt was stopped.
“The Warriors put it out of reach in the third period and early minutes of the final frame. Peacock scored three times from the three, 12 and one. Scott added one two-point conversion.
“Statistician Byron Warren Jr. had Scott with 97 yards, Peacock 53, Bobby Johnson 52, Larry Reid 16 and Joe Andrews 12 to pace the strong Sparta running game.
“Warren’s tackle chart had Reid and Johnny Cook with three solos, George McKenzie with two solos and one assist and Andrews, Johnson and Buddy Carrier with two solos each.”

“How can the Aggies lose with these six lovelies cheering them on? EHS cheerleaders who will be right there at the season opener Friday night with Atmore are Mary Hunter, Fred Griggers, Barbara Stinson, Captain Joy Lure Davis, Jackie Thornley and Mary K. Eddins.”

“Coach Wendell Hart will send his 15th edition of the Evergreen High Aggies into their season opener Friday night, if he has enough able-bodied men to fill all 11 positions. Evergreen plays Atmore’s Blue Devils here at 8 p.m.
“Probably starters, weights and positions for the Aggies are: left end, (Leon) Stinson, 160, or (Jimmy) Weaver, 140; left tackle, (Jerry) Windham, 183; left guard, (Bobby) Lynch, 159; center, (Mike) Miller, 160; right guard, (Bobby) Potts, 167; right tackle, (Philip) Brown, 175; right end, (H.W.) Ward, 145; quarterback, (Johnny) Ivey, 147; LHB, (Billy) Bateman, 149; RHB, (James) Reaves, 159; fullback, (Rhett) Smith, 195, or (Duncan) Roberts, 140.”

“The Evergreen Quarterback Club voted to buy new overcoats-raincoats for the Evergreen Aggie Football team at its first regular meeting last Thursday night. The coats will be green-suede with white lettering, and will be used during cold and rainy weather. QB president, John Raines, said the 25 new coats will cost approximately $300 and will be purchased with funds from the club treasury.
“The QB’s also voted to accept as their project of the year, a program to re-sod the football playing field with Tifton 57 grass.”

“BOX SUPPER: Everyone is cordially invited to a Box Supper at Mae (Booker) Williamson, Saturday night, Sept. 22, 1945. Bring boxes. Play games, have a good time. No drinking please.”
