NOV. 19, 1992

“A story about the Ronda Morrison murder case will be aired on national television this Sunday night.
“The CBS network’s news-magazine show ’60 Minutes’ will start at 6 p.m. local time (or a few minutes later if delayed by sports) on Channel 5 of Mobile and Channel 8 of Selma and Montgomery.”

“Monroe County projects will receive $250,000 in grant funds from the Alabama Historical Commission, executive director Larry Oaks has announced.
“The restoration of the Old Monroe County Court House will receive $225,000 while $25,000 will be used to study other historical sites in Monroe County, according to Bill Chance, chairman of the Restoration Committee of the Old Monroe County Court House.”

“The Masons of Alabama Lodge No. 3 in Monroeville honored 25-year members in a ceremony Nov. 7. Dayton Russell was honored as a 50-year member. Those honored included John Turberville, John Kennedy, Woodrow Ikner, Robert Miller, Glen Gladwell, Algee Brown, Charlie Deer, Claude Green Sr., Dayton Russell, Kenneth Green, Samuel Aiken, Little Andress, John Mackie, Marion Craft, Floyd Harper, Louis Green, Charles Jernigan and Thomas Lemons.”

“Frisco City High School upended Millry High School 20-7 Friday in Frisco City to advance to the second round of the 1A state football playoffs.
“(Shannon) Richardson posted one of his better performances Friday, piling up 94 yards on nine rushes. He also led the defense with 14 tackles.
“(Eric) Williams had 10 carries for 35 yards. (Tony) Gibbs, who was sacked several times, was credited with 13 rushes for a loss of a yard. He completed two of seven passes for 77 yards.”

“Excel High School exited the 2A state playoffs Friday when the Panthers lost 22-15 to Linden High School in Excel.
“Friday’s loss marked the first time Excel had been beaten in a first round playoff game since 1975. Excel went from 1976 to 1986 without making the playoffs.”

“Monroe County High School’s basketball team will tip off the ‘Schweers era’ tomorrow (Friday) in Beatrice when the Tigers take on J.F. Shields High School.
“Jack Schweers, 48, of Charleston, S.C., was hired by the Monroe County Board of Education in August to replace Joe Allen as the varsity boys basketball coach. Allen accepted the principal’s position at Repton School, ending an eight-year stint as basketball coach at MCHS.”

“Congressman Jack Edwards visited Monroe County Tuesday while on a break from U.S. House of Representatives proceedings.”

“North Carolina prison escapee Edward Horsley was convicted in Monroe County circuit court Tuesday of robbing and killing a teenage girl.
“Horsley, from Charlotte, N.C., was convicted in the death of Naomi Rolon, 16, of Hudson, N.C., whose mangled body was found near Franklin March 16.”

“The 1978 Monroe County Junior Miss pageant will be held Saturday at 7 p.m. in Greer Auditorium at Monroeville Elementary School with 22 high school seniors vying for the title.”

“The Frisco City town council Monday approved a general fund budget for the 1977-78 fiscal year – the first since the town’s incorporation.
“Mayor Gary Talley submitted the budget, which he drew up, as a ‘guideline’ that he hoped would improve the overall operation of city services.”

“The Excel town council Monday voted to request admission to the state district court system, which would mean abolishing the town’s Recorder’s Court.”

“The Repton High School Bulldogs’ first venture into the state playoffs was a success Friday night in Monroeville’s Tiger Stadium as Repton defeated longtime 1A power Sweet Water 21-7 before a very large crowd.
“Steve Harris’ running keyed the Repton win over Sweet Water as he rushed for 128 yards in the game, including a touchdown. Repton quarterback Donnie Reed put on an aerial show but had only two passes completed.”

“The Monroe Academy Volunteers, 9-1 in the regular season, used a ball control offense and a stingy defense to upset top-ranked Glenwood Academy 28-7 Friday night in Phenix City.
“Coach Vance McCrory’s Vols controlled the football for 60 offensive plays in the game.
“Frank Carter did most of the damage last week with the Vols running game, rushing for 140 yards in 15 carries and two touchdowns. Randall Norris also had a good night, rushing 18 times for 70 yards. Quarterback Tommy Bowden added 54 yards and two touchdowns and Sammy Carter made 25 yards in six carries.”

“Even though the J.F. Shields High School Panthers had the advantage of playing on their home field in Beatrice, they fell to the Thomasville High School Tigers 36-12 Friday night in the opening round of the state 2A playoffs.”

“Edward L. Smith Sr. has been named manager of the Conecuh-Monroe Counties Gas District, according to Col. Samuel E. Williams, president.”

“The Alabama Public Service Commission has authorized the L&N Railroad Co. to discontinue station agency and less than carload service at Corduroy. The dismantling and removal of the depot building was also authorized.”

“KINDLEY, AFB, Bermuda – Staff Sergeant Eugene L. Stinson of Frisco City has been awarded an ‘Aircraft Save Certificate’ in recognition of his exemplary service during an aircraft emergency.
“Sergeant Stinson, a United States Air Force air traffic controller, provided radar guidance to an RB-66 jet bomber to bring it to a safe landing after a fire erupted in the pilot’s compartment.”

“During the month of October, four moonshine stills, 1,920 gallons of mash, 29 gallons of whiskey, 172 bottles of beer and one vehicle were seized in Monroe County, Edward. J. Azar, administrator of the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board announced this week.”

“Tommy Hines, Monroe County Civil Defense Director, attended a statewide meeting of the Civil Defense directors and coordinators in Montgomery Fri., Nov. 9.”

“HOMECOMING QUEEN: Miss Ellen Lilly was crowned homecoming queen at the J.U. Blacksher High School Saturday night, Nov. 3, when Uriah played the team from Jay, Fla.”

“Pep Rally Is Planned Today In Frisco City: Boosters of the Frisco City Whippets plan a special pep rally Thursday (today) at five o’clock in downtown Frisco City.
“The school band and cheerleaders will lead the assembly in songs and yells in preparation for the clash between the Monroeville Tigers and the Frisco City Whippets.
“The game will be played Friday night, Nov. 16, in Monroeville beginning at 7:30.”

“Excel Game To Begin At 7:00 Friday Night: The game between Excel and Coffeeville originally scheduled at eight o’clock Friday night in Excel will begin at seven o’clock.
“The change in kickoff time was made so that interested fans may attend at least part of the Frisco City-Monroe County High School game at Vanity Fair Ball Park in Monroeville, Coach Gerald R. Irby stated.”

“Miss Gayle Ryland was crowned homecoming queen at festivities at Repton High School last Friday night.”

NOV. 17, 1932

“A boy was killed Friday morning at a cane mill near the school house (at Midway). His head was crushed between the lever and the mill.”

“Many farmers took advantage of the weather and killed hogs Saturday.”

“Ike Fuller and family moved from this place (Beatrice) to Repton last week. Mr. Fuler was depot agent here and goes to Repton for the same work there.”

“Mr. Cutts, who was here a few years ago as agent for the L&N, has returned and has the same job. He moved in with his wife a short time ago. He is occupying the house vacated by Mr. Fuller.”

“The Excel Fellowship Club met at the home of Elliot Williamson Monday evening at 6:30 o’clock.”

“Miss Hermie Parrish, who is a member of the Uriah high school faculty, spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Parrish.”

“Coach C.F. Matthews, Tom Roberts, Cecil Jackson and Preacher Skinner went to Montgomery Saturday for the Auburn-Florida game.”

“Misses Emma Yarbrough, Ivie Turnbull, Margaret Virginia Yarbrough and Mrs. D.M. Ratcliffe motored to Montgomery Saturday to see the Auburn-Florida game. They spent Saturday night with Miss Sara Ratcliffe who is a student at Womens College. Miss Sara Rutherford, a Troy S.T.C. student, was also a weekend guest of Miss Sara Ratcliffe.”

“Those who attended the Auburn-Florida game in Montgomery Saturday were Mr. Sam Martin, Thad Jones and Ford Murphy.”

“Mr. Will Marshall came home one day last week with a six-pound trout he had caught near Beatrice. Beside the six-pounder, he had three others smaller. He recently denied being a fisherman, but he can no longer do so.”

NOV. 15, 1917

“The Monroe Stock and Exchange Company received the first Chevrolet cars to be shipped in to Monroeville the first of last week and all cars were sold before the end of the week.”

“Mr. S.W. Bedsole presented The Journal with a potato this week of the Puerto Rico variety which weighed 6-1/4 pounds. Although this is not the largest exhibited here this season of the same variety, it is a very fine specimen.”

“Mr. F.E. Marshall has a force of men at work on his new machine shop. The building, which is being constructed with brick, will be much larger than the old one. All necessary machinery has arrived and will be installed as soon as the building is completed.”

“Messrs. S.W. Westbrook, Agricultural Agent of the L&N, and P.H. Brock of Pensacola were in the county last week and held meetings at Roy, Excel and Peterman in the interest of the Monroe County Potato Growers’ Association.”
