City council designates Evergreen as 'Official Bigfoot Capital of Alabama'

Donald McDonald of 'Killing Bigfoot' in Evergreen.
The Evergreen City Council voted unanimously earlier this week to approve a resolution making the City of Evergreen the “Official Bigfoot Capital of Alabama.”

During a city council meeting Tuesday night at Evergreen City Hall, council members voted, 5-0, to approve Resolution No. 2017-0207-01, a resolution declaring the City of Evergreen as the “Official Bigfoot Capital of Alabama.”

Councilman Luther Upton made the motion to approve the proposed resolution, Councilman John Skinner seconded the motion and council members Jerry Caylor, Elizabeth Davis and Vivian Fountain voted to approve.

Upton, who was instrumental in getting members of the television show “Killing Bigfoot” to attend the recent Evergreen Collard Green Festival, noted that many local citizens are interested in the subject of Bigfoot, and that a large crowd of Bigfoot enthusiasts filled the Big Red Hangar at the airport to see the festival’s Bigfoot presentation. He also noted that due to all of the media coverage of recent Bigfoot sightings in the county, Evergreen has received a number of visitors, and those visitors patronize local businesses like gas stations, restaurants and hotels while in the Evergreen area.

Upton also told the council that attempts are being made to contact State Representative Thomas Jackson to see if Jackson will submit a resolution or proclamation to the legislature, so that the City of Evergreen can also be designated as the state’s “Bigfoot Capital” by the state legislature. Upton said this will be similar to how the state legislature designated Evergreen as the state’s “Collard Green Capital” years ago.

The entire resolution passed by the city council on Tuesday night read as follows:

WHEREAS, many people around the world believe in the existence of Bigfoot-like creatures, and hundreds of sightings of these mysterious creatures are reported each year; and

WHEREAS, numerous Conecuh County residents have reported multiple sightings of mysterious Bigfoot-like creatures in and around Evergreen for decades, and that Evergreen is the geographical epicenter of these reported sightings; and

WHEREAS, those reports have attracted local, state, national and worldwide media attention, causing Evergreen and Conecuh County to be heavily associated with the ongoing discussion and study of Bigfoot reports in Alabama; and

WHEREAS, Evergreen and Conecuh County has attracted Bigfoot investigators from across the country, including members of the cast of the television show “Killing Bigfoot,” to investigate reported Bigfoot sightings in the area, and leading them to find evidence of these creatures in the Evergreen area; and

WHEREAS, Bigfoot themed events have been heavily incorporated into large, public events like the annual Evergreen Collard Green Festival; and those Bigfoot themed events have attracted large crowds of interested, local Bigfoot enthusiasts to discuss Bigfoot sightings and evidence; and

WHEREAS, city officials recognize that many tourists, outdoor enthusiasts and visitors to Conecuh County are interested in Bigfoot and that those same visitors stop in Conecuh County in hopes of seeing one of these legendary creatures, and at the same time patronize area businesses, including local restaurants, hotels and gas stations while doing so; and

WHEREAS, local officials see the benefit of supporting the educational, social and tourism aspects of Bigfoot research; therefore be it

RESOLVED that I, Pete Wolff, Mayor of the City of Evergreen, do hereby declare the City of Evergreen, Alabama to be the Official Bigfoot Capital of Alabama; and be it further
