MAY 2, 1991

Wolff Motors and Presley-Fluker win Babe Ruth openers:
Wolff Motors 7, Evergreen Auto Parts 4: Wolff Motors opened the 1991 Evergreen Babe Ruth baseball season with a 7-4 victory over Evergreen Auto Parts.
Bryant Robinson and Britt Ward keyed the offensive attack for Wolff Motors with two hits each.
Ward also was given credit for the victory on the mound after relieving Robinson in the third inning with one out. Greg Shehan led Evergreen Auto Parts at the plate with three hits, including a solo homerun.

Presley-Fluker 8, McKenzie Merchants 3: Presley-Fluker scored six runs in the second inning and held on for the 8-3 victory over McKenzie Merchants in the second game last Saturday.
Rhett Wilson went the distance on the mound for the victory, while Jason McMillian, Michael Bradley and Marlo McDaniel led the Presley-Fluker team in hitting.
Shannon Shofford, Deric Womack and Willie Womack, who had a two-run homer in the sixth inning, led the McKenzie attack.

Richard Brown, professional speaker and ladies basketball coach at Patrick Henry State Junior College, was the guest speaker at a recent meeting of the Alpha Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa. Brown, a very successful coach and after-dinner speaker for numerous groups in the Southeast, talked to the honorary sorority for women educators about winning in all of life’s situations.

MAY 6, 1976

The Sparta Academy baseball team won two games and lost three in the past week, according to Sports Information Director Byron Warren Jr.
On April 26, Escambia edged the Warriors, 3-2, with Jerry Peacock getting tagged with the loss although he gave up only five hits.
Sparta used its only two hits to good advantage in downing Fort Dale, 4-1, on last Thursday. Ronnie Pugh was the winning pitcher while the Peacock Brothers, Jerry and Terry, got Sparta’s hits.
Friday, the Warriors slipped past Escambia, 7-6, with Jerry Peacock on the mound. Freddie Sellers had two hits and Pugh one.
Fort Dale shut the Warriors out, 10-0, on Saturday with Joe Andrews being tagged with the loss. Jerry Peacock and Sam Wiggins had one hit each.
Monday, Wilcox clubbed Sparta, 12-4, to put the Warriors season record at four wins and nine losses. Jerry Peacock was the losing pitcher. Walker Scott had three hits; Bobby Johnson, two; and Jerry Peacock, Andrews and Wiggins, one each.

Sparta girls undefeated: Sparta Academy’s girls remained undefeated in softball as they staged a tremendous late rally Wednesday of last week to edge Fort Dale, 15-14. Donna Salter was the winning pitcher as the girls ran their record to 3-0.
Leanne Tanner led the hitters with two safeties.

Jr. League Assigns Players To Teams: President of the Evergreen Junior League, Howard Fore, announced this week the following list of new players with their respective managers:
Dodger-Chicks: Gene Glass, Skipper Carlton, Vernon Millsap, Mike Bethune, Barry Turk, John Skipper, William H. Kahl, Rodney Powell, Danny Hall, Billy Jack Smith, Ivan Gomes, Billy Griggers, David Stonestreet, John Crum Sessions, Herbert Ellis, Myles Covin, Marvin Salter and Gerald Salter;
Managers for the Dodgers are Robert Glass and Frank Chavers. Dizzy Dean and W.G. Langford will manage the Chicks.
Giants-Pelicans: Sammie Simpson, Wayne Hicks, Joe Brown, Tim Skipper, Johnny Stokes, Eric Pugh, Bobby Snowden, Paul Drummond, Robert Ward, Bill Snowden, Harold Wright, Larry Wright, Robert Williams, Jim Williams, John Barron, George Fontaine and John Shanklin.
Giants managers are Moreno White and Marvin Hicks. Managers for the Pelicans are W.S. Simpson and Robert Quarles.
Yankees-Orioles: John Autrey, Jerry Sasser, Ralph Pugh, Stanley Aaron, James Coker, Frank Bilbro, David Davis, Jimmy Bell, Shelby Windham, Dallas Kelly, Gregory Hall, Danny Crosby and Harold Bolton.
Waynard Price and Randy Moorer will manage the Yankees and the Orioles will be managed by Bill Murner and Terry Sullivan.
Fore said all the boys will be contacted by their managers as to time and place for practice.

Lyeffion Hi Loses First Track Meet: Lyeffion made three first-placements in a dual track meet with Flomaton in Flomaton Tuesday, according to Lyeffion’s Coach Dale Brown.
In the 440-yard dash, 880-yard dash and 440-yard relay Lyeffion took firsts. Danny Covin ran the 440-yard dash in 57.9 seconds. Thomas Frazier took first in the 880 for Lyeffion in two minutes 24 seconds. The 440-yard relay was made in 51.7 seconds by Danny Covin, Thomas Frazier, William Cater and Charles Salter.
Lyeffion’s Floyd Fields placed third in the 100-yard dash. In the mile run, Patton Brown came in second and William Cater third. Floyd Fields won second in the 220-yard dash, Bobby Salter was third in the 440, Wendell Brown second in 880 and Danny Covin placed second in the broad jump.

MAY 2, 1946

Evergreen Defeats Milton By Score 7 To 0: The Evergreen Baseball Club traveled to Milton, Fla. on Sunday and won its second game of the season, 7-0. Milton will journey to Evergreen Sunday for a game at 3 p.m.
Hart pitched three-hit ball for seven innings and McDonald held them to no hits for the next two innings. Johnson and Page each had two hits, and Bolton drove out a 300-foot homer in the first inning. The outstanding fielder was Barfield, first baseman.

Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Newman attended the golf tournament in Dothan the past weekend.

MAY 7, 1931

Ladies Ball Game Coming Attraction: Thursday afternoon, May 14, the first afternoon the stores will close for a half holiday, will also mark the time when another novel and eagerly anticipated event will transpire. According to information reaching this office baseball fans of Evergreen and vicinity will have the rare opportunity of witnessing a baseball game between teams composed of the best talent among the Evergreen ladies. The game is being sponsored by the Library Committee for the benefit of the Library.
The teams to play have been dubbed for sake of distinction “Down Town Giants” and “Up Town Cubs,” the one being composed of players living in the northern part of town and the other of those living in the southern part. The line-up for the teams is as follows:
Down Town Giants: Stallworth, shortstop; C. McReynolds, first base; McMillan, catcher; Binion, third base; Nash, center field; Phillips, left field; Northcutt, second base; Wild, right field; Shannon, pitcher; McNair, pitcher; M.H. Jones, pitcher; Binion, captain; Prof. W.P. McMillan, manager.
Up Town Cubs: Mills, shortstop; Suddith, third base; P. McReynolds, catcher; L. Kelly, right field; Williams, first base; Webster, left field; E. Cunningham, second base; Lane, center field; Wright, pitcher; M.W. Jones, pitcher; I. Kelley, pitcher; Williams, captain; Coach McInnis, manager.
J.O. Stapp will serve as umpire.
The price of admission to this game will be 15 and 25 cents. Of course, no one will think of missing it.
The game will be played at Gantt field Thursday afternoon.
