Warriors begin practice July 30: The smell of pigskin is in
the air at Sparta Academy as players and coaches at the school count down the
days to the start of fall football practice.
According to new Sparta head coach Clint Lowery, the
Warriors will begin fall football practice on Thurs., July 30. After two days
of mini-camp, the Warriors will hold two-a-day practices during the following
week.
Practice just around the corner: The popping of pads and the
shrill of whistles will soon be the sound you hear as Hillcrest High School’s
varsity football team counts down the days left before the start of fall
football practice.
Hillcrest will begin pre-season practice on Sun., July 26,
when the Jags gather at the school for the start of “Camp Belser.” The day will
feature a large team meal, Bible study and a good night of rest before the
official start of practice on the following day, Hillcrest head coach Maurice
Belser said earlier this week.

Mabry Cook Jr. will play in this year’s North-South All-Star Football Game
tomorrow (Friday) as part of All-Star Sports Week in Huntsville.
Cook, the son of Mabry and Marty Cook of Brewton and the
grandson of Bert and Susan Cook of Evergreen, signed a football scholarship
with the University of North Alabama on National Signing Day in Brewton.

Evergreen Stars win first game in district play: Game 1,
Mon., July 9: Evergreen fell behind to Brewton, 4-0, after 1-1/2 innings.
Evergreen then came back for four runs to tie the score in the third inning on
lead-off double by third baseman, Richard Byrd, who scored on infield single by
Mickey Jones. After one out singles by Scott Jones, Ryan Burt, Jamie Shipp,
Greg Stanton and fielder’s choice had tied the game, 4 to 4.
Then after holding Brewton scoreless in the top half of the
third inning, Evergreen exploded for six big runs, highlighted by doubles by
Jamie Deason, Richard Byrd and closing the outburst, a homerun by pitcher Greg
Stanton with one man on base for the last two runs of the inning leaving
Evergreen ahead, 10-4.
Evergreen and Brewton each scored two runs in the fourth
inning highlighted by singles for Kevin Townson, Richard Melton and double by
Richard Byrd to bring the scored to 12 to 6.
After Brewton scored two more runs in the fifth one of them
on a homerun by the catcher, Evergreen again matched Brewton two runs for the
inning and closed the game with ground out to Evergreen pitcher Greg Stanton
for the first victory in Little League tournament play. Final score in the
game, Evergreen 14, Brewton 9.

Local Alumni Plan To Attend ‘Kickoff’ Meet At Capstone:
Alabama alumni and Alabama football players will meet and eat at the second
annual University of Alabama kickoff Barbeque Sunday, Sept. 13, according to
Robert E.L. Key, president of the Conecuh County Alumni Association. Efforts
are now underway to enlist a sizeable delegation from Conecuh County to attend
the rally.
Last year, more than a thousand Crimson Tide fans from eight
states attended the barbeque, met and cheered the 1958 squad, and heard talks
by Head Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant and his coaching staff. The rally will be held
again this year in Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa and is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
with expectations that more than 1,500 alumni and friends of the university
will be present.
Coach Bryant, commenting on the plans for the event, calls
the Kickoff Barbeque “a major morale builder for the squad. It gives the boys
an opportunity to meet and know the alumni and many of the players of former
years.” Last year, several communities chartered buses and brought parties to
the rally, and plans are being made this year for an increased number of larger
groups.
JUNIOR LEAGUE RESULTS – GIANTS vs. DODGERS: Dodger dominance
continued Tuesday night with a 13-0 win over the Giants. Ronnie Jackson and
Bubba Faulkner hurled a two-hitter for the victors. Steve Baggett was the
conquered twirler. Faulkner was 2-for-2 and Grover Jackson and Joe Glass were
1-for-1 to lead the Dodger onslaught. Ed Briggs slammed a four-master with one
base runner ahead of him. Eddie Mosely and Brent Thornley each had a single for
the losers.

Locals Win From Greenville 6 To 4: The Evergreen ball club
defeated Greenville on the latter’s home diamond Sunday afternoon by a score of
six to four in a game featured by the hurling of Woody Mott, rotund hurler
recently acquired by the locals, and weird umpiring which threatened for a time
to precipitate fisticuffs.
Mott held the Greenville team hitless until two men were out
in the ninth inning, following which two weird decisions on the bases, coupled
with two hits and some slow fielding, allowed the Greenville outfit to score
three runs. One run had been previously scored without a hit by the home team.
The locals were paced at bat by Barney Ferguson, husky third
baseman, who hit safely three times in as many tries, followed by Sam Jones
with three hits in five tries. Al Hansen chimed in with two hits, and one hit
was registered by each of the other local clubbers except Archie Barfield, who
seemed unable to make them go safe.
Melton drove in three runs when he clouted a long drive to
center field which Wilson, Greenville center gardener, got his hands on but was
unable to hold. The play was called an error by Wilson, with Melton stopping on
third base. Melton also clouted out a two-base hit for his only base knock.
Fisticuffs were barely avoided in the ninth inning when
Hester, hometown umpire, made two bad decisions in succession. Manager Melton
took exception on the second occasion, and trouble was averted only when
teammates restrained the fiery Tom from taking a poke at Hester. Hester
immediately ejected Melton from the game, and a moment later sent Sam Jones to
the showers. No reason has been assigned for the chasing of Jones.
Following the flare up Sunday, announcement was made that
Hester had resigned as an umpire and will join the Chapman club as a player.
Announcement was also made Tuesday that J.O. Stapp, local arbiter, had
resigned, to be succeeded by “Sullivan” Murphy, efficient and well liked
umpire. The announcement of successful negotiations for the services of the
red-headed Murphy was received with approval from players and fans alike.
Players of other clubs hailed the securing of Murphy as a stroke of good
fortune for the league as a whole.
Another move designed to strengthen the local club for the
rest of the second half pennant chase is the announcement of the acquisition of
Herbert English, right-handed pitcher from Range. English pitched six innings
against the local club in the game between the American Legion team and the
Evergreen team on the Fourth of July, and Manager Melton was favorably
impressed with his showing. English will be eligible to participate in all
games starting Sun., July 22.
Evergreen journeys to Luverne for the usual Thursday
afternoon game, returning home for an imbroglio with Chapman Sunday.
