Teacher of the Year: Monroe Academy Headmaster Paul Kircharr congratulates Deidre Tucker as the recipient of the 2009 AISA Elementary Teacher of the Year Award. Tucker presently teaches first grade and has been employed with Monroe Academy for over 18 years.
White will play with South team: Grant White, a standout on
Monroe County High School’s basketball team, will participate in the Alabama
High School Athletic Association’s (AHSAA’s) All-Star Basketball Classic. The
game will be played at the University of Alabama-Huntsville July 16 at 8 p.m.
White played guard for the Tigers last season and averaged
12 points, eight assists, six rebounds and two steals per game. He stands 6-1,
weighs 160 and will be a senior on the Tigers’ 2009-10 team.
Gov. Bob Riley makes board appointment: For the second time,
Carole J. Banks is Gov. Bob Riley’s choice to represent District 1 on the
Alabama Board of Funeral Service.
The Alabama Board of Funeral Service is a regulatory body
that overseas the legal workings of all legitimate funeral homes within the
state of Alabama, such as licensing, testing, inspections and various aspects
relative to funeral service.
Monroe County won the Babe Ruth District 7 baseball tournament recently in Evergreen and will compete in the state tournament July 17-20 in Satsuma. Team members are Justin Burgess, Bryar Settle, Chaztin Taylor, Tyler Mitchell, Garrett Casey, Dusty Greene, Jake McKenzie, Watson Kennedy, Johnathan Simpson, Drew Braswell, Lawrence Hyde, Ty McMullen and coaches Mike Braswell, Billy Hyde and Bryan Settle.

Ambulance service sold: Larry’s Ambulance Service of
Monroeville has been officially purchased by Dr. Grayson Simmons and will be
managed by registered nurse Gail Turberville, Ms. Turberville announced
Tuesday.
The service will be operating from its current location on
Michael Street as well as from an emergency medical technician call room at
Monroe County Hospital, Ms. Turberville said.
She reported that the former owner, Larry Mitchell, will not
be working with the service, but some of his former employees will stay on.
Members of the Monroe County 10-year-old Dixie Youth all-stars are Tommy Murphy, Mitchell Turberville, Scott Broughton, Steven Newsome, Jason Pope, Sambo Ulmer, Chris Watson, John Thames, Nicholas Ackerman, Troy Brown, Chris Brannon, Michael Stacey and coaches Tommy Stacey and Collins McKinley.
A names David Walker headmaster: David M. Walker,
headmaster at Escambia Academy near Atmore for the past four years, has been
named headmaster of Monroe Academy.
Sam Carter, chairman of MA’s board of directors, said the
board interviewed five of the many candidates who applied and “we felt this man
was best for the position.”
The new headmaster replaces John Ross, who resigned last
month to become principal of Excel High School.
Walker has already begun working at MA in the afternoons as
he finishes up his work at Escambia in the mornings, and he is looking for a house
here.

Monroe County Has Cautious, Quiet Holiday Weekend: Monroe
Countians were apparently cautious as well as relatively quiet during the
Fourth of July holiday which terminated at Sunday midnight, according to
statements made by local officials.
Monroe County Highway Patrolmen listed no highway accidents
during the Independence Day holiday period from Friday through Sunday night.
Monroe Sheriff Charlie Sizemore said no outstanding arrests
for the weekend were made, stating the county scene was “comparatively quiet
and peaceful” for a holiday observance, at least as far as his office was
concerned.
County Oil Test Gets Under Way: Drilling operations on an
oil test well in South Monroe County were scheduled to get underway late
Tuesday.
The test, being drilled by the Survey Drilling Co., Dallas,
Texas, is located approximately 2-1/2 miles north of the Chrysler community.
The permit was issued to Arden A. Anderson and plans call
for a depth of 5,600 feet to be reached. The test is on the property of the
Shomo Land Co., Blacksher heirs.
Phillip Hardee, 13, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Hardee of Beatrice, won the Southwest Alabama district 4-H Club tractor driving contest in eliminations held in Montgomery last week. He was in competition with 4-H’ers from 17 counties. Young Hardee was the only entrant who made a perfect score on the test on tractor operation, maintenance and safety.

Lett Saved From Electric Chair: Basing his action on the
unanimous recommendation of the State Board of Pardons and statements by many
leading citizens of Monroe County that in their opinion there is much doubt as
to the guilt of the condemned man, Governor Miller last Friday commuted to life
imprisonment the death sentence imposed on Walter Lett, following his
conviction in the Monroe County Circuit Court of criminally assaulting a white
woman.
Lett, who was to have been executed at Kilby Prison July 20,
has all along stoutly denied his guilt of the crime, declaring that he did not
know the woman, and that he was at work miles away in another part of the
county when it was alleged to have occurred.
Mrs. C.F. McKinley and sons, John and Jack Howard, of Atmore, were the guests of Mrs. A.C. Lee the first of the week.
YOUNG BEATRICE BOY ENTERS WEST POINT: Dick Ivey, young son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas T. Ivey of Beatrice, entered West Point Military Academy as a student on July 2. Dick was accompanied to New York by his father, T.T. Ivey, and sister, Miss Lorena Ivey, who were the guests of Mrs. Hunter Vaughan during their stay.
Mr. S.R. Gregg of Franklin is boasting of an unusually fine peach crop this season. He had on exhibition in Monroeville Tuesday a 12-inch stem containing seven large peaches.

The Southern Bell Telephone company is erecting poles for its line of telephones into Monroeville. We hope shortly to enjoy communicating with the outside world.
MANISTEE: Things are looking quite gloomy in our town at present, the Manistee Mill Co. having gone into bankruptcy, everything is closed down and nothing doing.
The summer session of school at the Jones Mill academy was to have commenced Monday after the fourth Sunday in June, but owing to so much rain it was postponed one week.
Barbecue and Baseball at Finchburg: The Franklin-Finchburg baseball club entertained the citizens of Finchburg, Franklin and vicinity July 3 with a barbecue and picnic, also a number of visitors from Bell’s Landing, Peach Tree, River Ridge, Monroeville and other points. The day was an ideal one for the occasion. All present seemed to enjoy the day immensely.
A large party of Monroevillians spent Saturday at Schuster. A ball game between the Oak Hill and Monroeville teams and a barbecue were the chief attractions.
Mr. C.L. Hybart sustained a painful sprain of his foot in the ball game at Schuster last Saturday. At this writing, he is able to discard his crutches.
J.W. Brown of Conoly and J.H. Herlong of Manistee were here Tuesday evening to attend a meeting of the Royal Arch Chapter.
