Hillcrest Jags, Sparta Warriors record wins last Friday in football

It was nice to see Hillcrest High School and Sparta Academy both get wins in football last Friday night.

Hillcrest beat Monroe County, 19-0, in Monroeville, giving the Jags their first shutout since Oct. 29, 2010, when they beat Georgiana, 49-0, in Georgiana.

It’s been a while since the Jags have shut out an opponent at home. The last time Hillcrest posted a shut out in Evergreen was on Aug. 26, 2005 when they beat R.C. Hatch, 48-0.

Hillcrest is 12-8 all-time against Monroe County and last Friday’s win was Hillcrest’s third-straight against the Tigers. Prior to last Friday, the Jags had only shut out MCHS once before. That occurred on Sept. 20, 2002 when the Jags beat Monroe, 26-0, in Monroeville.

Hillcrest’s game against Monroe County was the 230th game in Hillcrest football history and was the 97th win by the school’s football team. That game also marked the 144th career win for Hillcrest head coach Larry Boykin.

Also on Friday night, Sparta beat Meadowview Christian, 35-28, in Evergreen.

Friday night’s Sparta-Meadowview game was the fourth all-time meeting between the two schools in football, and Sparta is 2-2 against Meadowview thanks to Friday night’s win.

Sparta’s 35 points against Meadowview also represented Sparta’s highest points total in a single game going back to Sept. 17 of last year when the Warriors whipped Dixie Academy, 42-19, in Evergreen.

Sparta’s game against Meadowview was the 427th football game in Sparta football history and the 201st all-time win by the school’s football team. That game also marked the 81st career win in football for Sparta head coach Mike Bledsoe.

Sparta travels to Luverne this Friday night to play Crenshaw Christian. Sparta is 17-8 all-time against the Cougars, who they last beat during the 2000 season.

Hillcrest travels to Headland for the second all-time meeting between the two schools in football. The Jags beat Headland, 39-7, last year in Evergreen.

For those of you still interested in joining our local group in ESPN’s College Football Pick ‘Em Contest, you’ve still got time to sign up at http://games.espn.go.com/college-pickem/en/frontpage.

To participate, all you have to do is sign up for the contest and join our local group. The group name is “Conecuh-Monroe FB Pickers,” and the password to join is “football.”

As of Monday, 28 local sports fans had signed up to compete against one another during the upcoming football season.

More than a few of us locally have participated in this contest for nearly a decade now, and it always seems to add a lot to the football season. Maybe the best thing about it is that the game is free and easy to play.
