My movie picks this week are 'Contagion' and 'X-Men: First Class'

It’s Wednesday, so today I give you my weekly list of movies that will open in theatres this week as well as a list of movies that will be released this week on DVD.

I hope this will serve as a useful guide as to what’s going on this week if you happen to be near a movie theatre or if you’re looking for something to drop into your NetFlix queue.

Movies that are scheduled to hit theatres this week include:

Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star (Comedy, R): Directed by Tom Brady and starring Nick Swardson, Christina Ricci, Stephen Dorff, Don Johnson and Edward Herrmann.

Burke and Hare (Comedy, Not Rated): Directed by John Landis and starring Simon Pegg, Andy Serkis, Isla Fisher, Tom Wilkinson and Christian Brassington.

Contagion (Action, Suspense, PG-13): Directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Marion Cotillard, Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Creature (Horror, R): Directed by Fred Andrews and starring Serinda Swan, Mehcad Brooks, Sid Haig, Pruitt Taylor Vince and Rebekah Kennedy.

Kevin Hart: Laugh at my Pain (Comedy, Not Yet Rated): Directed by Leslie Small and starring Kevin Hart.

Main Street (Drama, PG): Directed by John Doyle and starring Colin Firth, Orlando Bloom, Amber Tamblyn, Patricia Clarkson and Ellen Burstyn.

One Fall (Drama, Fantasy, PG-13): Directed by Marcus Dean Fuller and starring Marcus Dean Fuller, Zoe McLellan, Seamus Mulcahy, James McCaffrey and Mark La Mura.

Tanner Hall (Comedy, Drama, R): Directed by Francesca Gregorini and Tatiana von Furstenberg and starring Rooney Mara, Georgia King, Brie Larson, Amy Ferguson and Tom Everett Scott.

Warrior (Action, Drama, PG-13): Directed by Gavin O’Connor and starring Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Morrison, Noah Emmerich and Nick Nolte.

We Were Here: Voices From the AIDS Years in San Francisco (Documentary, Not Rated): Directed by David Weissman and Bill Weber.

New DVD releases for the week of Sept. 6 include:

Assassination Games (Action, Suspense, R): Directed by Ernie Barbarash and starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Scott Adkins, Kevin Chapman, Ivan Kaye and Valentin Teodosiu.

Bed & Breakfast (Comedy, PG-13): Starring Dean Cain.

A Cinderella Story: Once Upon a Song (Family, Musical, PG): Directed by Damon Santostefano and starring Lucy Hale, Freddie Stroma, Megan Park, Missi Pyle and Jessalyn Wanlim.

The Entitled (Suspense, Crime, R): Directed by Aaron Woodley and starring Ray Liotta, Kevin Zegers, Laura Vandervoort, Devon Bostick and Victor Garber.

Everything Must Go (Drama, R): Directed by Dan Rush and starring Will Ferrell, Rebecca Hall, Laura Dern, Stephen Root and Michael Pena.

Hanna (Action, PG-13): Directed by Joe Wright and starring Saoirse Ronan, Eric Bana, Cate Blanchett, Anna Popplewell and Olivia Williams.

A Horrible Way to Die (Horror, Suspense, R): Directed by Adam Wingard and starring A.J. Bowen, Amy Seimetz, Joe Swanberg, Brandon Carroll and Lane Hughes.

Vidal Sassoon: The Movie (Documentary, Epic and Historical, Special Interest, PG): Directed by Craig Teper.

X-Men: First Class (Action, Fantasy, PG-13): Directed by Matthew Vaughn and starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Rose Byrne and Kevin Bacon.

If I could only watch one movie at the theatre this week, it would be “Contagion,” and if I had to pick just one DVD to rent this week, it would be “X-Men: First Class.”
