Hines grabs 10 rebounds: Evergreen’s Chris Hines grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds Wednesday of last week as the Crimson Tide fell to Mississippi State, 74-66, in Starkville, Miss.
Hines started at forward for Alabama and logged 29 minutes of playing time against the Bulldogs. Hines grabbed a team-best and career-high 10 rebounds, eight on defense and two on offense. He also scored four points, blocked three shots, made three steals and had an assist.

Sparta Academy’s Erica Palmer and Nick Andrews were recently selected as members of the AISA All-Star Boys and Girls Basketball Teams. They played in the annual all-star game Friday at Huntingdon College in Montgomery.

Hillcrest High School’s varsity softball team opened the 2010 season with a 10-8 win over Monroe County High School Friday in Monroeville.
The Lady Jags put the game away in the top of the seventh inning when junior second baseman Leslie Wiggins hit a clutch single that drove in runners from second and third and gave Hillcrest the two-run win.
Hillcrest head coach Terry Gandy said Monday that he was more than a little happy to start the season off with a win.
(Other standout players on Hillcrest’s team that season included Amerisha Mixon, Victoria Walden, Sasha Rankins, Trishana Lee, Shanika Taylor, Lakarress Riley, Kabrina Peters, Khadedra Nettles, Crystal Meeks, Haley Drakeford and T’kiya Pittman.)

Aggies play Andy this afternoon: The Evergreen Aggies wrapped up a successful basketball season by winning the area and regional tournament held at W.S. Neal. The Aggies took their first game by defeating Wilcox County, 81-51, on Thursday night. Horace Smith and Perona Rankins led the scoring with 26 points and 22 points, respectively. Others scoring were Joe Mitchell, 12; Sanford Moye, six; David Floyd, five; Philander Rogers, two; Johnny Allen, two; Anthony Williams, two; Arturo Scott, two; and Michael Lampley, two.
On Friday the Aggies took the area title by defeating Monroeville, 71-44. Scoring went as follows: Horace Smith, 25; Perona Rankins, 16; Joe Mitchell, 11; Philander Rodgers, eight; Johnny Allen, five; Sanford Moye, four; Russell Bozeman, two.
Evergreen had four players on the all-tournament team. They were Sanford Moye, Joe Mitchell, Horace Smith and Perona Rankins.
On Saturday, it came down to what people thought it would be, Evergreen against Jackson. When all the excitement was over, it was Evergreen coming away with a 67-65 win. Aggies scoring went as follows: Perona Rankins, 24; Sanford Moye, 18; Philander Rodgers, nine; David Floyd, six; Horace Smith, five; Joe Mitchell, three; and Johnny Allen, two.
The Aggies now advance to the state tournament at Tuscaloosa. The first round match-up for Evergreen will be Andalusia. They will meet at 1 p.m. Thursday. Andalusia will carry a 19-10 record into the game while Evergreen has a 30-1 mark. If the Aggies win they will play again Friday at 4 p.m. The finals for 3A will be at 7 p.m. Saturday night.
Coach Charles Branum’s Aggies have had a tremendous season this year that everyone in the county should be proud of. Everyone should give them all the support possible in the upcoming state tournament.

Rescue Squad wrestling Friday night: The Conecuh County Rescue Squad is sponsoring championship wrestling this Friday night at 8:30 o’clock at Evergreen High School’s Memorial Gymnasium.
The attractive card will give local fans a chance to see some of the wrestlers who compete on “Championship Wrestling” on Channel 5 TV on Saturdays at 12:30 p.m.
The feature event will be a special, six-man tag team match with Ron (Tennessee Stud) Fuller, Robert Fuller and Georgia Jaw Cracker vs. Jimmy Golden, Norvel Austin and Big “C.” Joe Leduc will meet Charlie Cook in a big challenge match.

MARCH 4, 1965

Two Aggies make all-tourney team: Two members of the Evergreen High Aggie cage squad were named to the all-tournament team at the conclusion of the Region 1, Area 2 tournament held here last week.
Billy Kendall, senior guard, and Jimmy Warren, senior pivotman, were named to the 12-man all-star squad.
Champion Monroeville placed three men on the squad as did Flomaton. Melvin Middleton, a senior, and Terry Salter and Mike Segers, both juniors, were chosen from Monroeville. Arvin Bell and Gwin Butler, seniors, and Steve Fore, junior, were named from Flomaton.
T.R. Miller of Brewton had Mike Sasser and Bob Watson, both seniors, on the squad. Uriah’s Larry Harris and Georgiana’s Jimmy Weathers, both seniors, rounded out the squad chosen by coaches and officials.

MARCH 2, 1950

Evergreen Ends Season With Win Over Andalusia: Coach Wendell Hart’s Evergreen Aggies brought their season average within one game of the .500 mark with a 42-41 win over Coach Bill Stanford’s Andalusia High Bulldogs.
Guerry Moorer pushed 16 points through the cords to pace the Evergreen attack. Jack Cunningham and Gwyn Daniels followed. Cunningham basketed 11 points and Daniels nine. Bobby (Pistol Pete) Wells dropped in four points, and Dickey Bozeman two to round out the Aggies scoring. The Aggies played without the services of John Greel Ralls who was on the sick list.
The game in Andalusia ended regular season play for the Aggies.

DISTRICT AA MEET HERE TONIGHT: W.S. Neal High of East Brewton and Robertsdale High will swap buckets at seven o’clock tonight (Thursday) as the First District AA Basketball Tournament gets underway in Evergreen High’s beautiful Memorial Gymnasium. The tourney will be a three-day affair with the finals scheduled for Saturday night.
Both the winner and runner-up will enter the state AA tournament in Tuscaloosa March 10-11. At the end of the final game, the all-district team selections will be announced and trophies awarded.
Two other games are on tap for the opening session tonight. Top-seeded McGill of Mobile gets its first taste of the action at 8:15 when they encounter Choctaw County High of Butler. The final game of tonight’s session pits U.M.S. of Mobile against Grove Hill.
(Other teams in the tournament included Bay Minette, Citronelle, Murphy, Semmes Tech, Fairhope, Evergreen, Jackson, Foley and Atmore.)

Tournament Days Are Proclaimed By Mayor: Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 2-4, 1950 have been proclaimed Tournament Days in Evergreen by Mayor J.H. Robison. The Mayor’s Proclamation was issued to encourage cooperation of local people during the First District AA Tournament, which begins tonight (Thursday) in Memorial Gym at Evergreen High School and continues through Saturday night.
In his proclamation, the mayor asked the merchants and businessmen to fly their United States flags on each of the three days the tournament is in progress, and urged the cooperation and support of townspeople during the meet.
