Presley-Fluker finished their season as the 2003 Babe Ruth
League Champions on June 19, 2003. Members of the team are Justin Gary, John
Goodson, Nick Klaetsch, J.T. Murphy, Ryan Moore, Coach Glen Gary, Darvin Mims,
Jesse Crawford, Jonas Claiborne, Chase Brown and Coach Jonas Claiborne. Not
pictured: Daniel Ballard, Quinton Lee and Austin Murphy.
Taylor’s University completed their first rank testing on
April 26, 2003, where 15 students received belts ranking yellow, orange and
green. They also went to competition on May 17, where they won four trophies
and four medals.
Evergreen basketball team to attend Alabama Sports Festival
2003: The Evergreen Youth 18-and-Under basketball team has made it to the
Alabama Sports Festival State Basketball Tournament to be held in Huntsville
June 27-29, 2003.
They will play two games Fri., June 27, and two games Sat.,
June 28. If they win their pool, they will play in the championship game Sun.,
June 29, at 10 a.m.
Coach Ernest Boykin says his team has got a chance but they
have to play smart.

QB’s disco dance Fri., June 30, at Castleberry: The Conecuh
County High School Quarterback Club is sponsoring a Disco Dance to be held
Friday night, June 30, in the school gymnasium. Admission will be $2 for
singles and $3.50 per couple. All young people are invited to come and enjoy
this dance.

Greenies Edge Baker 21 In Extra Innings; Gaston Whiffs 18
Men: The Evergreen Greenies won an uphill 2 to 1 victory over Baker, Fla. in a
game played in Brooks Stadium Sunday afternoon that really gave fans their
money’s worth. The local sluggers tied the game up 1-1 in the ninth inning and
chased home the winning run in the last of the 11th. George Gaston
and newcomer Jerry Kemp were heroes in the win.
Gaston scattered eight hits and it took a “fluke” homerun by
Baker’s pitcher L. Rice to get a score off him. He shoved that third strike
past 18 Baker batters, 16 of them falling in the regulation nine innings.
Kemp, who moved to Evergreen only a week ago, started his
first game for the Greenies at third base and played errorless ball afield. In
the 11th, he singled home Sam Brown for the winning marker.
Gaston was never in much trouble except in the eighth when
he allowed two more hits after Rice’s homer. He struck out Whitfield with two
men on to end the threat.
Sam Brown led the Evergreen hitters with two hits, one a
triple, in five trips to the plate. He scored both runs for the locals.
Jeff Moorer also got a triple and a single in four trips and
Kemp had two singles in five trips.
L. Rice had two hits in four trips, D. Rice and Holloway had
two for five to lead the Baker batters.
Three Greenies play the Brewton Millers in Brewton tonight
(Thursday) and the Millers come to Brooks Field for a game Sunday afternoon at
three o’clock. Baker will be here again Sunday week.

BABE RUTH SOCKS HOMER NUMBER 28: New York, June 24 – Babe
Ruth smashed out his 28th home run of the year in the third inning of
New York Yankees-Boston Red Sox game here Sunday. No one was on base. Russell
was pitching for the Red Sox.
The drive put Ruth 19 games, 15 days and four home runs ahead
of the pace he followed last year to establish a new season record of 60.
Ruth hit his 28th and 29th homers last
year in his 29th game on July 9, Ken Holloway of Detroit being
victim. Sunday game was Ruth’s 60th. On June 24 in 1927 he had only
24 homes runs to his credit.

MATCH GAME BASEBALL: There will be a match game of baseball
on Friday evening next between the picked nine and the scrub nine of the
Evergreen Baseball Club.
A match game of baseball was played in this place on the
evening of the 23rd inst. between the Greenville and Evergreen
Clubs. The score resulted as follows: Evergreen 29, Greenville 16.
