Historical marker between Jackson and Salitpa on Highway 69. |
Someone asked me the other day if I’d heard any good local
Bigfoot reports, and I have to admit that things have been pretty quiet in that
regard around here lately. Bigfoot must head to Florida this time of year in
search of warmer weather. I don’t know.
However, I am reminded that this month marks 21 years since
an unusual report of a Bigfoot-like creature that took place in Clarke County
in December 1996. As the crow flies, Clarke County isn’t really that far from
Conecuh County, so keep that in mind as you read this report.
According to witnesses who filed a report with the Bigfoot
Field Researchers Organization (BFRO), it was on Dec. 5, 1996 around 3 p.m.
when they saw a “large creature… covered with hair” cross the road in front of
them in broad daylight. This incident happened on State Highway 69, near a
historical marker between Salitpa and Jackson, west of the McVay community.
Witnesses described the creature as being about 6-1/2 feet
tall and said that it crossed the road just below the top of the hill, moving
in a “sideways fashion.” The witness said that he had the window down in his
car and “clearly heard a scream unlike any I have heard before in my life.”
What’s interesting to me about this report is that if you
look at a map of Clarke County, you will see that the area where this incident
occurred is a short distance from the Tombigbee River. As regular readers of
these Bigfoot reports will know, they commonly occurred near water sources like
rivers, creeks and streams.
While reading this report, I couldn’t help but be reminded
of the somewhat famous Clarke County Bigfoot incident that occurred on July 15,
2015 at Gainestown, which isn’t that far from where the December 1996 incident
took place. Many in the reading audience will likely remember the 2015 case,
which made national news, because the witnesses in that case said they planned
to kill the creature if someone didn’t remove it from their property.
The witness in this case said that it was around 3:30 a.m.
on July 5, 2015 that the “dogs started going crazy” and one of the dogs yelled
out like it was hurt. The witness then heard something coming up on the front
porch, and when the witness looked out the front window he saw something
“unforgettable and unbelievable” there under the porch light. The witness went
on to describe a creature that was “too big to stand straight up on the porch”
as it went through trash bags containing leftover food scraps.
In the end, let me hear from you if you have a Bigfoot story
to report. I’m also wanting to hear from anyone who comes across any signs of
Bigfoot, including any tracks.
