FEB. 18, 1886
Sheriff Ellis has increased
his number of boarders within the last few days.
Mr. Gillaspie, from the
southern portion of Monroe County, has moved to Mr. H.N. Crumpton’s place in
Old Evergreen. He comes to Evergreen to send his children to school.
Chancery court is in session.
Circuit Clerk Beard, who has
been in the Brooklyn community, reports that farm work is progressing very well
in that section.
We notice hanging in the
probate office a neat map of Evergreen of which Mr. J.B. Watkins is the
draughtsman. The measurements of the town lots and their outlines are all drawn
with strict fidelity. Mr. Watkins is an accomplished penman in every respect.
Commercial: Cotton: Low
middling, today in Evergreen, 8-1/2 cents; in Mobile, 8-7/16 cents.
Messrs. Owens Brothers have
folded their tent and silently stolen away. While here, they did some splendid
and artistic work in photography. They understand their business thoroughly and
have given satisfaction to their many patrons in Evergreen and vicinity. They
have gone from here to Milton, Fla.
A slight cold wave came along
last Monday.

Prominent Citizen Dies
Suddenly Saturday A.M.: Eugene M. Binion, 74, well known and prominent citizen
died suddenly of heart attack about 11 o’clock Saturday morning, causing
sadness and sorrow to hosts of relatives and friends here and elsewhere in this
and other sections.
Mr. Binion was stricken with
the attack while enroute to the home of Mr. F.M. Yarbrough several miles below
here near Old Sparta. According to Lonnie, Etheridge, who was with him at the
time, he stopped the car just before they arrived at Mr. Yarbrough’s home and
told him he would have to drive as he was sick.
Young Child Fatally Injured
By Truck: Wesley King, seven-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom King, was fatally
injured Monday afternoon about three o’clock when a heavy log truck ran over
his body. The child was attending Old Town School and had gone with some other
children to Stinson’s Store nearby to get some candy.
Last Will Rogers’ Picture
Here Feb. 23-24-25: That beloved moving picture actor, Will Rogers, will be
seen at Evergreen Theatre Sunday, Monday and Tuesday in his last picture, “In
Old Kentucky.”
Messrs. Hanna, managers of
the local theatre, are preparing to take care of the biggest crowds ever to
attend their theatre during the three days the picture will be here. They have
arranged for special matinees all three days in order that everyone desiring to
see the show may have the opportunity of doing so.

FEB. 16, 1961
The Evergreen Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol
joined other CAP units of Alabama, Georgia and Florida I a search mission
Friday for a missing Air Force T-28 training plane.
The missing plane was piloted by Carlos R. Jalil, a
foreign exchange student pilot from Ecuador who was receiving flight training
from the U.S. Air Force. The plane’s wreckage with dead pilot were not found
until late Monday when it was spotted by a helicopter from Moody Air Force Base
at Valdosta, Ga.
This was the first opportunity that the Evergreen
Squadron has had to demonstrate its ability to use its newly assigned airplane
on a mission. The Evergreen plane was piloted by 2nd Lt. G.D.
McKenzie, accompanied by Capt. Lee F. Smith, 1st Lt. David E.
McKenzie and 2nd Lt. R.V. McLendon as observers.
Beware Of Perryman At Shipp Street: For three consecutive
weekends, there’s been an accident at the corner of Shipp and Perryman Streets,
it is reported by Police Chief Johnny Andrews.
Early Saturday night, Roland Flowers of Andalusia failed
to stop when approaching Perryman from Shipp Street on the cemetery side and
hit James C. Pate’s new 1961 Ford.
On Saturday night, Feb. 4, Wm. Albert Salter was charged
with reckless driving when he failed to stop at the same intersection on the
north side of Perryman and hit a car driven by Clarence C. Keller from Mobile.
Sunday afternoon, Jan. 29, the same intersection had
action when Ray Ellis Johnson ran into the rear of a car driven by Jacob F.B.
Lowrey.

Weather observer Earl Windham reported .23 inches of rain
in Evergreen on Feb. 11 and .34 on Feb. 14.
He reported a high of 63 degrees on Feb. 9 and lows of 22 degrees on
Feb. 12 and Feb. 13.
The Spring Term of Circuit Court of Conecuh County will
begin Monday morning at the Courthouse here with Circuit Judge Robert E.L. Key
presiding. After opening procedures, Judge Key will empanel the grand jury
which will begin its deliberations with assistance from District Attorney Ted
Pearson of Monroeville and Assistant D.A. David T. Hyde Jr.
The Civil Docket will then be called. There are a total
of 16 cases set on this docket, according to Mrs. Jean E. Riley, Circuit Clerk.
Glenn McDaniel, veteran Conservation Enforcement Officer
with the Fish & Game Division of the State Dept. of Conservation, announces
today that he has resigned his position with the State to actively seek the
office of Sheriff of Conecuh County. McDaniel said that he would qualify as a
candidate in the Democratic Primary Election of June 3 the proper time.
McDaniel has 14 years experience in law enforcement, much
of this in Conecuh County as game warden. He is a graduate of the Southwest
Alabama Regional Police Academy at Faulkner State Junior College, Bay Minette,
and holds the Associate Degree in Law Enforcement from Faulkner Junior College.

Weather observer Harry Ellis
reported .03 inches of rain on Feb. 7 and .35 inches on Feb. 9. He also
reported a high of 67 degrees on Feb. 13 and lows of 24 degrees on Feb. 11 and
Feb. 12.
Jim Searcy, the Executive
Director of the Coastal Gateway Regional Economic Development Alliance, is
scheduled to be the keynote speaker at next week’s Evergreen-Conecuh County
Chamber of Commerce Annual Membership Banquet.
The banquet will be held next
Thurs., Feb. 24, and is set to start at 6 p.m. at Hillcrest High School in
Evergreen.
Searcy was named Coastal
Gateway’s executive director in December 2010 after having served as the
president of business and industry retention at the Birmingham Business
Alliance.
Over 150 citizens against a
proposed landfill near Repton took part in a press conference Monday morning on
the steps of the Conecuh County Government Center in Evergreen and voiced their
displeasure over not being allowed to discuss the landfill during a meeting of
the county commission.
The Conecuh County Commission
met Monday morning at 9 a.m. and the press conference started a few minutes
after the end of the meeting. A number of media outlets, including at least
three newspapers and two television stations, were on hand for the event.
The recipient of Evergreen
Medical Center’s 2010 Billy G. McKenzie Employee of the Year Award is Mary
Mims. Mims has been with EMC since 2003.
