Fort Walton’s Vikings will visit Hillcrest Fri., Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. for a preseason contest.
“Fort Walton is a large Class 5A school by Florida’s standards,” said Hillcrest head coach Maurice Belser. “We thought it would be good for us to schedule a real good opponent to get us ready for our tough regular-season schedule.”
Last year’s Fort Walton team had 60 players on the varsity squad that consisted of sophomores, juniors and seniors.
“We’ll dress 40 to 45 players in grades 8-12 this season,” said Belser.

Sparta Academy’s Warriors will have an opportunity to gauge where its strengths and weaknesses are Fri., Aug. 17, when they compete in a three-school preseason jamboree.
Head coach Mike Sims said the Warriors will compete against Autauga and Patrician academies in preseason scrimmages at Autauga Academy.
“Right now we’re focusing on doing the little things right,” Sims said at Monday’s practice. “If you do the little things right then the big plays will come.”
He said the Warriors got a taste of their first full-contact work in full gear last week.
“I thought they got after each other okay,” he said. “We started this week in shoulder pads and helmets but we’re going to get back in full gear and be more physical this week too.”

Junior League meets tonight: Tonight at 7:00 in the courthouse there will be a very important meeting of all interested parents and individuals concerning Little League. The meeting was to be held for two primary reasons.
One, officers for the 1983 season need to be elected so that they can have enough time to plan for next year. This will eliminate the hasty preparation that might happen if the election is put off until next year.
Second, a Babe Ruth League for the 13-15 year olds need to be considered for the sake of all those who did not get to play this year, and all of those who move up this coming year.
“Please take time out to attend this meeting so that next year we can have a bigger and better year than we had this past year,” a spokesperson said.

Junior League Ends Season’s Play: In the last week of baseball, the Orioles came within an ace of beating the Chicks with the score ending at Chicks 11, Orioles 10. In the nightcap, the Giants beat the Red Sox, 9-6, Stan Coker dealing for the Giants and Andy Moses for the Sox.
Thursday night the Pelicans found the right combination on the Chicks beating them, 3-2. This game set a record in that it was played a full six innings in one hour.
The Yankees found the Red Sox easy pickings in the second game as they hammered out a 11-4 victory.
Friday the steadily improving Orioles pounded out their first win soundly trouncing the Hawks, 15-4. In the second game, the Giants blew up in the Dodgers’ faces handing them an easy 9-2 victory.

League Enjoys Sheriff’s Hot Dogs: On Wednesday afternoon the League was treated to its annual wiener roast. Last year, Mr. Henry Sessions was their host. This year, Sheriff Brock found out just how many hot dogs 100 boys can eat.
Mr. Ward Alexander, League President, gave a short speech on sportsmanship and exhibited the trophies, one for each league for the boy that the players select as being representative of good sports in Junior League play. The players selected John Cloud, son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Cloud, to receive the trophy from the Major League, and Billy Kendall, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.G. Kendall Jr., was presented the cup from the Minor League. Both boys are members of the Yankee Club as was last year’s winner, Scott Cook.

All-Star Tilt Draws Full House: The Dodgers and the Chicks went up against the best the League could offer Saturday night and both came up victorious.
In the first game, the Chicks downed the All-Stars, 8-3, behind the fast-balling Homer Faulkner. The Chicks exploded in the fifth inning racking up five runs to take the lead and cut off the All-Stars in the last inning.
In the second game, the Dodgers who have been hot as a two-dollar pistol all season shut out the All-Stars, 4-0. Don Holcombe pitching his last game in Junior League play gave the finest performance of his career as he faced the heaviest hitters in the league for six innings and allowed three hits. His teammates played heads-up ball and gave him perfect support all the way. The Dodgers ran the bases like pros, taking advantage of every error by the All-Stars. In the third, fifth and sixth innings no All-Star reached first base.
Robert Rigsby and Jimmy Weaver dealt for the All-Stars and while they turned in a fine performance the All-Stars were no match for the Dodgers.
