The elusive turkey gobbler. |

W.T. Zellers of Evergreen killed this big gobbler on March
26 “in the woods.” The gobbler weighed 19 pounds, had an 11-inch beard and
one-inch spurs.
From “Wright Angles” by Artie Wright: I have never been more
proud of a group of teenagers as I was last week when the Hillcrest High School
Jaguars overcame the odds to defeat the Trojans of Charles Henderson High
School in Troy.
Everything was in line to go against the team. They were
playing in front of a hostile crowd against a team with a winning tradition
which had already embarrassed them earlier in the season. Just the week before,
Charles Henderson dismantled the Jaguars with a 9-0 no-hitter, collecting 17
strikeouts along the way.
But with a ninth-grade pitcher on the mound, the Jags pecked
away at the Trojans and never let them go all the way. The Trojans threatened
to score in five of the seven innings of the game, but could manage only three
runs to the Jaguars’ seven.
Coach William Wall called it the “biggest win in the history
of Hillcrest baseball.” I have to agree with him.
The Jaguars are now 6-2 on the season and are in second
place in the area with three area games remaining. Two games remain against the
team holding on to first place… Andalusia High School. If the Jags defeat
Andalusia or Greenville, they will receive a bid to the playoffs.. another
first for the program. Two wins over Andalusia and they will win the area
crown.

“Fore” is the word for next Thurs., April 11, when the
Evergreen Golf Club stages its annual Invitational Golf Tournament. Golfers
will enjoy the beauty of the course as well as the play. Here Bill McGehee tees
off on the water hole, No. 8, as pretty golf hole as there is in all the world.
Bill will join Hugh Ellington in competing for the championship. The other
golfer is Henry Kinzer whose “banana ball” has earned him fame all over South
Alabama.
Jimmy Bell was right proud of himself late Saturday when he
brought this bird home to show mom and dad, Thera and Otis Bell. Jimmy was with
Tal Stuart Jr., who had a bit of fun by hiding Jimmy behind his pickup and
telling the Bells they had better round up a posse as Jimmy was lost in the woods.
Lavon Baggett killed this gobbler the other day. He and his
brother Wilbur are among the county’s more successful turkey hunters.
Golfers gather here Thursday: The South Alabama Amateur Golf
Circuit moves to Evergreen next Thurs., April 11. The “pros” and “duffers” are
at Brewton County Club today and were at Atmore last Thursday.
Evergreen Golf Club hosts the meet at the beautiful
nine-hole layout four miles north on Highway 31 next Thursday morning starting
at 7:30. Spectators are welcome and there is no admission charge for them.
The local golfers have a full field with all spots being
filled early Tuesday and some 112 expected to take part.

THE EVERGREEN STAR
We learn that Ike Goley captured an alligator in his fish
trap last Monday night. The reptile, beast or animal was eight feet long, and
it is said to be chained in the yard at Hotel Whitcomb. We haven’t seen this
alligator, but Mr. Strout, who is or has been a Sabbath school superintendent,
says that such is the fact; and notwithstanding we are not far from the first
of April, we believe all of it.
Last week, Mr. Y.M. Rabb had a small hickory shad, which he
purchased from a man who caught it in murder creek. This is probably the result
of the shad eggs placed in that creek a few years since. We do not believe that
the genuine white shad could be raised in any stream tributary to the Gulf of
Mexico. The reason of this is because the tides of the gulf are too low. The
tides on the Savannah go much higher than Augusta, and we have never heard of
the white shad being caught above the tide water limit.
Fish will have a picnic eating the patient angler’s bait
from now on. Several parties have already tried their luck.
