Ryan Takes Honors In Golf Club’s Annual One-Day Tournament:
Jimmy Ryan, outstanding young golfer from Greenville, won the Evergreen Golf
Club’s Eleventh Annual Golf Tournament here last Thursday by closing out James
McMurphy of Atmore, five and four on the final round of play in the
Championship Flight. Ryan was also Tourney Medalist with a one under par, 35,
on his final round.
Ryan, playing perfectly all the way, turned in consistent
rounds of 37-37-37-35, only two over par for the extremely difficult Evergreen
course.
Powers McCleod, Methodist minister from Andalusia, took the
honors in the consolation of the Championship flight.
Players to the four Evergreen Junior League Baseball teams
were assigned to their teams yesterday afternoon. The players were auctioned
off to the team managers last Monday night at a meeting at Evergreen High
School. Nearly 80 boys were divided among the four teams.
League President Johnny Briggs announced that play will
begin on Wednesday afternoon, May 16, at the new Evergreen Junior League Park
at the end of Pecan Street, next to the Evergreen Heading Co. The opening day’s
action calls for a doubleheader. The new park is expected to be in shape for
the boys to practice there by next week.
Briggs also said that there will be a mass meeting of all
the parents of Junior Leaguers and anyone else who is interested in baseball or
the City Recreation Program in the near future.
