MLK program set for Saturday: The Rev. Jeffery Thompson, one of Tuscaloosa’s most dynamic young ministers, will be the keynote speaker during the NAACP’s annual community program on Sat., Jan. 13, celebrating the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday at First Baptist Church in Evergreen at 6 p.m.
On Monday, the NAACP will hold the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade through downtown Evergreen at 2 p.m.

Flemming to run for probate judge: Steve Flemming announced this week his candidacy for the office of Probate Judge for Conecuh County and that he will be seeking the Democratic nomination for that office in the June 5 primary election.
For the past 27 years, Flemming has been an active member of the community at large and lives at 135 Liberty Hill Drive in Evergreen. Since 1991, Flemming has owned and operated Interstate Tire Pros in Evergreen with a workforce of over 20 employees. He is also the CEO of Steve Flemming Properties, LLC, providing quality housing to Conecuh County residents.

Calf show set for Feb. 26: Organizers of the 73rd Annual Conecuh County Steer & Heifer Show announced this week that this year’s show will be held on Mon., Feb. 26.
The showmanship portion of the event is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. with the sale to begin at noon. This year’s show will be held behind the former Poole Truck Line building in Evergreen.

Weather observer Harry Ellis reported 0.5 inches of rain in Evergreen on Jan. 4, 0.12 inches on Jan. 5, 0.04 inches on Jan. 6 and 1.24 inches on Jan. 7. He reported a high of 67 degrees on Jan. 4 and lows of 47 on Jan. 5 and Jan. 6.

Michelle Pate leaving Friday for state YWOY program: Miss Michelle Pate, Conecuh County’s 1993 Young Woman of the Year, will spend a week in Montgomery beginning this Fri., Jan. 15, preparing for the 36th annual Alabama’s Young Woman of the Year Program.
Fifty-four candidates will take the stage on Jan. 22 and 23 as Alabama Junior Miss, Inc., presents “A Winter Wonderland” at the Montgomery Civic Center, complete with fur muffs, ice skating outfits and energetic routines.
The Conecuh Women’s League, which sponsors the local Young Woman of the Year, along with Michelle’s family and friends, urge you to please support Michelle throughout her week’s stay in Montgomery.

Conecuh County native writes book of Conecuh: Noah G. King, born and raised in the Flat Rock community of Conecuh County, has written a book, “Some Kings and Allied Families of Conecuh County, Ala.”
In the book, Mr. King touches on the origin of the name and a little family history; as well as some prominent people by that name. Families covered in the book include Kings, Diamonds, Hobbs, Mobley, Calloway, Wadsworth and Harrelson. Retired from the United States Army, Mr. King now lives in Stone Mountain, Ga.

Troy Smith of Smith’s Interstate Ambulance Service announces this week that he now has two ambulances to serve this area even better than before. The ambulances operate out of Smith’s Interstate Gulf Service Station located at the Interstate 65 and Highway 84 interchange at Fairview and will speedily answer calls any hour of the day or night. Both ambulances are fully equipped for all types services.

Lambert C. Mims, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the City of Mobile, will be the guest speaker at the Evergreen Baptist Church on Sunday morning at 11 o’clock. The church is observing Men’s Day under sponsorship of the Brotherhood.
Mims is a native of Uriah and an active businessman and public official. He is the youngest man ever elected to the Mobile City Commission and will begin his term as Mayor of that city (the office is rotated among three commission members) in May of this year.

City to open city hall bids Tuesday at 2 p.m. – Bids on the proposed new Evergreen City Hall will be opened at two o’clock Tuesday afternoon in Mayor Henry Sessions office at City Hall.
In addition to Mayor Sessions, all members of the council, Mayor Pro-Tem Percy Brantley, Dr. Joseph H. Hagood, W.T. (Jack) Wild, Knud Nielsen and Bob Bozeman, City Clerk Miller Sellers, a representative of the city’s architects, Pearson, Tittle & Narrows, and a number of bidders are expected to be present.

Sixteen Young Men Report For Active Duty: The following young men who reported for induction and examination Mon., Jan. 11, have been accepted and will report for duty Jan. 19: Rogers Vison Salter, Gus House, Billy Matthew, Hubert Rufus Johnson, Alfred Andrews Higdon, Calvin Clifton Davis, Charles Edmund Crutchfield, James Edward Nettles Jr., George Manford Godwin, Ralph Ernest Garrett, Herbert Harvey Richerson, Alton Eugene Shipp, Eubie Nelson, Norman Francis Brooks, Otis Leon Bell and Rayder Wyatts Feagin.

In Africa: Mr. and Mrs. C.F. Pate has just received a cablegram from their son, Frank, saying he was well, somewhere in Africa.

C.J. Boothe Is New Manager At Elmore’s: C.J. Boothe arrived here Wednesday to assume management of the local branch of V.J. Elmore Store, he having come here from Monroeville where he was in charge of the Elmore store for the past two and one half years. He succeeds F.B. Littleton who has managed the store here since it was established something like eight years ago. Mr. Littleton is being transferred to Tuskegee to assume management of the store there.

Above is a recent picture of Mr. and Mrs. John Dickerson of Evergreen, who on Tues., Jan. 12, 1943, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Dickerson married in Butler County Jan. 12, 1893 and moved here 38 years ago.
