Spring football gets
underway: Spring football practice at both of Conecuh County’s high schools
kicked off earlier this week as players at Hillcrest High School and Sparta
Academy took the field to prepare for next fall.
Hillcrest held its first
official spring practice Monday afternoon at Brooks Memorial Stadium in
Evergreen, and Sparta was scheduled to hold its first practice of spring on
Tuesday at Stuart-McGehee Field in Evergreen.
Victoria Walden pitches
no-hitter: Hillcrest High School senior pitcher Victoria Walden threw a
no-hitter against area rival Wilcox Central High School Tuesday of last week.
Walden, who has already
signed a softball scholarship with Judson College in Marion, allowed no hits
and struck out six opposing batters in a three-inning, 18-0 decision against
Wilcox. The no-hitter was the first of Walden’s high school career, Hillcrest
head coach Terry Gandy said. Walden was also a force at the plate, going
3-for-3 and driving in four runs.
(Other Hillcrest standouts in
that game included Shanaya Grace, Jamika Holley, Dominique McCreary, Myeisha
Rudolph, Sierra Salter and Yasmine Woods.)
Edward Hudson of Evergreen
recently landed the biggest bass caught by any fisherman this year at the state
lake in Beatrice, according to Lake Manager Brenda Craft. The “monster” bass
weighed seven pounds and nine ounces.

Evergreen Cagers Play Spring
Game: A spring practice game is scheduled for those taking part in the current
spring basketball drills at Evergreen High School. The game will be played in
Memorial Gymnasium Friday at 1:30 p.m. and pits seniors vs. next year’s
players.
Twelve players, headed by six
lettermen, are taking part in the drills. Lettermen are Jimmy Raines, Sid
Lambert, Scott Cook, Ronnie Jackson, Larry Ellis and Joe Sasser, all of whom
started some games last year. Lambert, Jackson, Ellis and Sasser are juniors,
the others sophomores.
Others taking part include
Kenny Harper, Sammy Brown, Mike Fields, Wayne Tolbert, Billy Kendall and James
Ellington, all of whom played on the B-team this past season.
Coach John Robinson said that
all of the boys who will play could not participate in the practice, including
Jimmy Warren, a member of the varsity last season.
Aggies Trip Tigers For Second
Win: The Evergreen Aggies boosted their record to 2-1 Saturday night as they
downed the T.R. Miller Tigers, 2-1. The victory was costly to the Aggies
however as starting and winning pitcher Willie Mack Pate tripled attempting to
run out an infield roller in the third inning when Wally Schad’s single drove
home Kruse who got in on an error. A triple by Paul Deason, an error and a
two-run single by Jimmy Weaver in the fifth gave the Aggies their runs and
ended the evening’s scoring.
Ronnie Jones took over
pitching chores for the Aggies after Pate left and hurled one-hit baseball for
the final two innings. Bo Barrow started and finished on the hill for T.R.
Miller.
Bill Ivey of Evergreen won
his second championship of the series of spring invitational golf tournaments
being held by clubs in South Alabama and Northwest Florida when he took top
honors at DeFuniak Springs, Fla., over the weekend.

Greenies Lose Series Games,
Wins Two: Thursday afternoon, the Greenies met the Andalusia Rams in that city
only to be turned back by a three to one count. Lee Anthony on the mound for
Evergreen held the Rams well in hand but errors by his teammates caused the
Greenie defeat.

Andalusia Rams eked out another win over the Greenies by a 3 to 1 score.
Manheim on the hill for the Greenies pitched good ball but his teammates failed
to solve the offerings of three Ram hurlers.
Wilson Hayes led the Greenies
attack by slapping out two singles and a double. Big Bill Walls connected for
two singles.
Saturday the Greenies played
the Troy Trojans in Troy but came out second best. The score stood 6-1 at the
end of the contest. Harris, Hayes, Walls and Duncan were the only Greenies able
to solve the offerings of Babbit.
Sunday the Greenies snapped
their losing streak by combining nine hits, 11 walks, and an error to score a
15 to 3 verdict over the Troy Trojans. Lefty Goetz held the Trojans to six
scattered hits, one a home run and one a triple. Harbin, newly acquired first
sacker, collected two singles, a triple and a double to lead the Greenies
hitting attack. Skipper Rice socked out a homer and two singles.

Browns smashed the Greenies by a 10-6 score. Hyde relieved Manheim to pitch
good ball. Ray took over the pitching duties in the ninth. Bill Walls led the
