“SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT: There will be a men’s softball tournament Sat., June 22, at O’Bannon Park in Brewton. Entry fee is $75 and bring your own balls.”

“Mrs. Janette Locklier of Flomaton announces the engagement of her daughter, Susan Lynn to Hugh Thomas Fountain III, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Thomas Fountain Jr. of East Brewton.
“The prospective groom is a 1982 graduate of W.S. Neal High School. He attended Marion Military Institute in Marion, Ala. He is a physical education major at Troy State University and a member of the Troy State Trojan football team.”

From “English Notes” by Rance English – “About two years ago the Alabama Department of Corrections decided to form an employee football team. Like any faithful and loyal football devotee, I decided to participate. I proudly pointed out that when I played in school, I was all-conference, all-star and all-everything.
“Their first hostile move was to submit me to the obvious indignity of a physical exam. The doctor, who appeared to be past 55, was a bit on the feeble side and it was all he could do to complete the examination. Hence, I passed without mishap.
“The next horrible thing they did was to submit all of us to physical exercise! I vigorously protested, ‘I came out here to play football, not to exercise.’ After the first day I must truthfully say I did not fell all-conference or all-American – merely all in!”

“Former Auburn gridiron great Wayne Frazier, who went on to a successful six-year professional career, has been named an assistant football coach at Troy State University.
“The announcement of Frazier’s appointment was made Saturday by Troy State athletic director and head football coach Billy Atkins, an ex-Auburn star himself.
“Frazier replaces Max Howell as offensive line coach. Howell resigned June 1 to become administrator and athletic director at a new private school.
“This will be Frazier’s first venture into the coaching ranks, and comes two years after his September 1986 retirement from the pros. At present, he resides in Albany, Ga., where he is a sales representative for a contained corporation.
“Frazier and his wife are natives of Evergreen. Frazier’s outstanding football career began at Evergreen High School under Coach Wendell Hart.”

“Conecuh County lads from the ages of 8 to 12 again have the opportunity to participate in one of Alabama’s outstanding programs for boys, the Wildlife Camp sponsored by the Evergreen Rotary Club. The camp will be held June 17 and 18 at Tal Stuart’s Pond near Belleville.
“John Nielsen is chairman of the Rotary Club committee coordinating plans for the camp and he is assisted by other members of the club.
“Campers will receive instruction in the areas of riflery, fly, spin and bait casting, skeet shooting, conservation, tree identification, trapping, hide preservation, water safety by the Alabama Department of Water Safety.”

“W.E. (Bill Parsons) Named Head Football Coach At Tuskegee High School Last Week: Announcement was made here the latter part of last week by Prof. Claybrook, principal of the Evergreen High School, that Bill Parson has tendered his resignation as assistant coach to accept the position as head coach at Tuskegee High School.
“He has held the position as assistant coach and director of the city recreational program for the past two years.
“Parsons… is a native of Americus, Ga. He was an all-state fullback-center on the 1944 Georgia State Champions. Following graduation, he accepted a football scholarship at Auburn. But a two-year hitch in the Navy ended his Tiger career. After receiving his discharge, he entered South Georgia Junior College and earned Little All-America recognition. Later, he led the South Georgia 11 to a victory in the Little Rose Bowl Game.
“When Wyatt Posey moved from SGC as head coach to Tulsa, he took Parsons and four other players with him. As a senior at Tulsa, Parsons scored 16 touchdowns and averaged 5.5 yards per run, gaining 713 yards.
“In 1952, following graduation at Tulsa, Parsons accepted the head backfield coaching job at Southwestern State Teachers College, while recovering from a knee operation.
“He resigned from Southwestern to sign a professional football contract with the Chicago Cardinals in 1953, but reinjured his knee and returned home. He was immediately sought after by Evergreen and joined Wendell Hart there as assistant coach and summer recreational director for the city.”

“The Alabama State League will stage its third annual ALL STAR GAME on Sun., June 30, 1940, and from all advance information it gives proof of being the biggest event of this type ever staged in South Alabama.
“For this game, the League has been divided into two sections, the Northern and Southern divisions. The Northern team will be composed of players from the Tallassee, Greenville and Troy clubs while the Southern entry will come from Andalusia, Brewton and Dothan.
“Each entry will have 15 players available for this contest, including the managers, who will be playing managers. Each club will have two catchers, five infielders, four outfielders and four pitchers. It was decided to have these clubs selected by the sports writers in the towns of the League and so the Northern club will be selected by Arlin Byrd, Greenville; J. Willie Ranson, Tallassee; and W.I. Powers of Troy. Joe Burgess and Joe Jones, Andalusia; Harold Pearson, Brewton; and Maston O’Neal and Jack Parsons, Dothan, will name the Southern players.
“The League has more power hitters this season than at any time since its organization, among them being Gordon Goodell, Tallassee outfielder, who if he continues at his present pace, will have more than 40 home runs to his credit by the date of the All Star Game. There are quite a number of outstanding pitchers in the League and in addition to making it tougher for these men to make their selections, this game should prove a sensation when the power hitters go up against the best pitchers and vice-versa.”
