“Evergreen’s Middleton Field
will soon be the base for a LifeFlight helicopter it was announced at the
regular Evergreen City Council meeting Tuesday night. William Noser came before
the council on behalf of CJ Systems Aviation Group to request a five-year lease
with the city. They plan to have the service operational by May 1 if the
Federal Aviation Administration approves the paperwork in time.
“CJ Systems manages the
LifeFlight ambulance service for Baptist Hospitals. They currently have
helicopters in Mobile and Pensacola and want to expand the service by placing a
base on the property behind AAA Cooper, where a crop dusting company formerly
operated, that is owned by the city.
“Noser said Baptist feels
there is a need for the service in this area because of many missed calls when
the other helicopters are already dispatched elsewhere.”
“The Castleberry Town Council
held a called meeting Monday night to discuss personnel issues and hired a
part-time police officer (Vince Heath) to assist Chief of Police Randy
Givhans.”
“Judge Jeff T. Brock of
Evergreen has announced that he has qualified and will seek re-election for his
third term as District Court Judge of Conecuh County.”

“Clint Hyde earns Eagle Scout
badge: On Sun., March 10, Clint Hyde, son of David and Harriet Hyde, received
the coveted Eagle Award. Many boys join the Boy Scouts, but very few reach
Eagle.
“The ceremony took place at
the Evergreen Baptist Church and many Boy Scouts, friends and relatives
attended. Clint was escorted by scouts Will Cook, Chris Lanier and Daryl Fox,
who also were flag bearers. A brass ensemble which consisted of scouts Shannon
Pugh and Brent Salter, scoutmaster Pat Poole, band director Phil Mika and
friend Cynthia Pugh, provided patriotic music to start the ceremony.
“Assistant Scoutmaster
Richard Jenkins was the Master of Ceremonies with Assistant Scoutmaster Tim
Johnson narrating ‘The Trail to Eagle.’ Rev. Jack Williamson, who is Clint’s
pastor, asked David and Harriet Hyde to help make the presentation of the Eagle
Award to Clint.”
“Southern Pine selects
students: Each year Southern Pine Electric Cooperative sponsors two students
from area high schools to receive a one-week, expense-free tour of Washington,
D.C.
“Candidates representing
Hillcrest High School are Casondra Cooke and Chris Lanier. Candidates
representing Sparta Academy are Kimberly Jane Griffin and Chris Owens.”

“Three Conecuh County young
women are among the 13 contestants in a preliminary Miss America pageant
scheduled April 2 and 3 at Patrick Henry Junior College in Monroeville.
“Contestants from this area
are Ernestine Garrett, 23, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph E. Garrett of
Evergreen; Patsy Watson, 18, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Watson of Repton;
and Tammy Barlow, 18, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James H. Barlow, Rt. 1,
McKenzie.”
“George W. Saxton of
Evergreen has qualified for the Democratic nomination for the office of
Constable, Beat 11, in the primary election of May 4.”
“Bobby Stewart, well-known
farmer and cattleman of the Fairview community, qualified last Thursday as a
candidate for the Democratic nomination for Chairman of the Conecuh County Commission.”
“Wayne E. Johnston, County
Treasurer and clerk to the County Commission, has been appointed absentee
voting officer for the county in the primary elections this year by Circuit
Judge Robert E.L. Key. The appointment was made on Monday, being necessary
because Circuit Clerk Leon A. Salter, who would normally serve in that
capacity, is a candidate for re-election.”

“William Samuel Cope, age 53,
died unexpectedly in a Montgomery hospital late Friday night, after a brief
illness.
“Mr. Cope owned and operated
Cope Funeral Home here and was well known over this area. A Mason and a
Shriner, he was also widely known through his activities as a sportsman.”
“City deeds property to Board
of Education: The City of Evergreen will deed the property behind the City
School to the Board of Education. This action was taken at the council meeting
Tuesday night, according to City Clerk Miller Sellers.
“The property in question has
been sought by the Board of Education for use as a playground area.
“Sellers said that the
council stipulated that the Boy Scout Hut (built by the Evergreen Rotary Club)
would not be included in the deed.”
“More than 12,000 acres of
cotton is scheduled to be planted in Conecuh County this year, according to Alcous
Mancil, ASC office manager.”
“L.D. King Jr. was granted a
permit to remove the old warehouse building on Belleville Street next to the
railroad at the lower crossing. He plans to build a concrete block building for
lease to a tire recapping plant.”

“Folsom To Speak In Evergreen
Friday: J.E. (Big Jim) Folsom, candidate for the office of governor of Alabama,
is scheduled to speak in this city Fri., March 29, 8 p.m.
“It is expected that ‘Big
Jim’ will bring with him ‘The Strawberry Pickers,’ a string-band being used in
his campaign.”
“Reynolds Home Damaged By
Fire Last Friday: Fire which originated when an oil heater exploded in the
bathroom at noon last Friday, greatly damaged the home and contents of Mr. and
Mrs. G.C. Reynolds. The blaze, fed by the kerosene oil from the exploded stove,
spread rapidly and soon filled the entire building with smoke and flames.
“The fire department
responded in record time and soon had the flames under control but not until
considerable damage had been done to the home and furnishings. The damage was
partially covered by insurance. Mr. Reynolds says that repairs will be made as
soon as possible.
“Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds
expressed their sincere appreciation to members of the fire department, neighbors
and friends of the excellent work that was done in extinguishing the fire. They
are especially grateful to Fred Post, who was the first on the scene, for the
splendid work which he did. Mr. Reynolds was also generous in his praise of the
local firemen for the fine work they did.
“This was the first fire in
which the new fire truck was used. City officials and members of the fire
department are delighted with its performance.”
