“Former Sparta coach in HOF:
Sparta Academy junior high girls basketball coach Richard Brown will be
inducted into the Florida Community College Athletics Association Hall of Fame
Nov. 18.
“Brown’s 1972 men’s team at
North Florida Community College set a national all-time scoring record,
averaging 115.3 points per game.
“During his 38 years in the
Florida coaching ranks, he had 35 winning seasons and his players had a 96
percent graduation rate.”
“(Sparta Academy head coach
Don) Hand opened fall practice Monday of last week with 33 players. He lost two
players to injuries and three others left the team.
“’We’ve got 28 players and 10
or 11 of them are freshmen,’ he said. ‘We have a good group overall and they’re
working hard.”
Standout players on Sparta’s
team that year included Tony Raines, Chase Brown and senior quarterback Will
Ivey.
“Heat and humidity have been
the Hillcrest High School Jaguars’ two worst enemies this week.
“Head coach Arlton Hudson
said the heat and humidity is ‘killing’ the coaches’ efforts to get the Jaguars
ready to open the 2005 season in two weeks.
“Hudson said he’s doubtful
that the team will be ready to play W.S. Neal High School in a preseason
scrimmage Aug. 19. The game is set for Evergreen at 7 p.m.”

“The Sparta Academy 1990
varsity cheerleaders attended a UCA Clinic July 30 through Aug. 3 at Huntingdon
College. Each day they were evaluated on a cheer and/or sideline routine they
learned that day. These girls did extremely well and returned home with seven
Blue Superior ribbons and three Gold Outstanding ribbons. They also received a
Spirit Stick every night and on Friday they were awarded one to bring home. On
Thursday the girls performed a dance routine they had practiced for two weeks
prior to the clinic and received a Blue Superior ribbon. Because of their
excellent work during the week they were awarded a Superior Trophy on Friday.
The 1990 Varsity Cheerleaders are Kaye Salter, Pam Jones, Stephanie Booth,
Michelle Pate, Julie Brundage, Stacey White, Co-Captain, Ashley Earnest,
Co-Captain, and Kimberli Griffin, Captain. Linda Coker is their sponsor.”
“Football clinic set at
Hillcrest Friday at 7 p.m.: The Alabama High School Athletic Association will
conduct a football clinic Fri., Aug. 10, at 7 p.m. at Hillcrest High School in
the cafetorium. Anyone wishing to become a football official or wanting to
learn more about football rules should attend this clinic. For more
information, contact James Stallworth.”

AUG. 14, 1975
“Evergreen QB’s softball meet
won by Miller: The T.R. Miller Mill Co. team of Brewton won the championship of
the Evergreen Quarterback Club’s softball tournament here Saturday. The games
drew good crowds and the entire tournament was most successful.
“Johnston’s Big T won second
place and a deserving Slocomb team finished third.
“Other teams participating
were Flxible Southern, Conecuh-Monroe Counties Gas District, Southern Equipment
of Brewton and a team from Selma.
“Quarterback Club officials
expressed appreciation to the volunteer umpires and the many spectators who
attended the games. They expressed especial thanks to the Rev. Zedoc Baxter and
Terry Coleman who put the tournament together.
“Proceeds from the tournament
made possible a new dressing room for the football team which was nearly
completed Saturday with help from the QB Club.”
“Conecuhi QB’s meet Aug. 21:
The Conecuh County High School Quarterback Club will hold its monthly meeting
Thurs., Aug. 21, at 7:30 in the school library. All parents with boys playing
little league football are urged to attend.”
“Improvements are completed
tennis court: Local citizens today expressed appreciation to the Evergreen City
Council an the Conecuh County Board of Education for recently completed
improvements at the public tennis court behind Memorial Gymnasium at Evergreen
High School. The court has been resurfaced and a new fence erected around it.
“The same citizens suggest
that there is a need for a badminton court and an outdoor, surfaced basketball
court to serve recreational needs in the community.”

“Evergreen QB Club To Meet
Tuesday Night: The Evergreen Quarterback Club will hold its first meeting of
the session at the Recreation Center at 7:30 Tuesday night. The meeting was
scheduled to be held this past Tuesday, but was postponed became of conflict
with Jr. League All Star Games.
“All members of the club and
any other interest persons are invited to attend. Important business is to be
discussed and anyone who is interested in promoting the athletic program at
Evergreen High School should attend.”

“BOY SCOUT NEWS: Our regular
meeting was held last Monday night at 6:30 o’clock. John Law Robinson and Pat Tharpe
chose teams for a softball game before the business meeting began.
“The scouts will meet Tuesday
night at the Lone Star Service Station to go swimming.”
