Depictions of "classic" circular UFOs from witnesses. |
This month marks the 17th anniversary of one of
the most unusual UFO reports to ever come out of Wilcox County, and while the
details are still a little unclear, the incident remains interesting nonetheless.
The best source of information about this October 2000 UFO
incident is the report that was filed about it through the Mutual UFO Network
(MUFON) on Sept. 17, 2008 - nearly eight years after the incident occurred.
According to that report, one day during the month of
October 2000, two young men were hunting on land in Wilcox County when they saw
an unusual “round-like object” in the air. The object “came down, then went up
fast,” the witness said. The two witnesses remained in place and as they
watched, the object came back down and paused for an estimated four to five
minutes.
During this four to five-minute period, the witnesses got a
“good look” at the object and became satisfied that they were seeing a bona
fide Unidentified Flying Object. The witnesses gave a brief description of the
object saying that it was a “circle-like object” with “lights all around it.”
The witnesses also described feeling “shocked and scared at the same time”
during the incident.
The witnesses then ran inside to get one of their mothers,
but by the time they made their way back outside, the object was gone. The
witness noted that “to this day, no one takes me serious about what we saw.”
This UFO report is interesting for a number of reasons, but
it also leaves a lot of unanswered questions. The person filing the report with
MUFON didn’t give his name, but noted that the incident occurred on his
family’s property. The unnamed person filing the report did note that his
friend’s name was Eric Johnson. Based on other information in the report, I
think it’s possible that one or both of these individuals may have been living
in Mobile when the incident happened or when the report was filed with MUFON in
2008.
Also, other than to say that the incident happened in
October 2000, the report doesn’t give the exact date that the incident
occurred. The report also doesn’t specifically mention the exact time of day
that the incident took place. Was it early in the morning? Was it late in the
evening? Around noon?
The report is also vague when it comes to location. Other
than to say that the incident happened somewhere within the borders of Wilcox
County, it doesn’t say exactly where the hunters were when they saw the UFO.
Was it near Camden? Was it near the Alabama River? Near Pine Apple or Pine
Hill?
I’ve followed UFO reports in Alabama closely for a number of
years, and if I had the chance to interview these two witnesses, I’d ask them a
number of other questions. Were the lights encircling the object a specific
color? Were they flashing? How large was the object? From which direction was
it traveling when you first saw it? How close did it come to the ground? Did
they experience any unusual aftereffects?
In the end, I’d like to hear from the witnesses above or
from the mother mentioned in the report, so that I can question them further
about what they saw. I’d also like to hear from anyone else who saw something
out of the ordinary in the Wilcox County skies in October 2000 (or at any other
time). More information could allow us to unravel the mystery behind what the
two hunters reportedly saw 17 years ago.
