Hannah Woodard was named Miss Football during halftime at
Hillcrest High School’s homecoming football game Friday night at Brooks
Memorial Stadium in Evergreen. She was escorted by her father, Willie Woodard.
Charlotte Maye, a Hillcrest High School graduate, played in
her first preseason semi-pro women’s basketball scrimmage for the Mississippi
Storm on Saturday in Biloxi, Miss. Maye posted 22 points, nine rebounds, three
steals and two assists in the 88-37 win over a team from Keesler Air Force
Base.
Hillcrest High School’s volleyball team recorded a 3-2 win
over Luverne last Thursday afternoon in Evergreen.
Yasmine Woods and Danielle Travis recorded several aces at
key times of the match to swing the momentum in Hillcrest’s direction.
(Other Hillcrest players in that match included Tiana Green
and Tykeria Merrills. Todd Smith was Hillcrest’s head coach.)
Tuskegee University, led by senior quarterback Justin Nared
of Evergreen, improved to 2-2 on the season and to 1-0 in conference play when
they defeated Lane College, 44-3, Saturday at Cleve L. Abbott Stadium in
Tuskegee.
Before a crowd of 3,678, Nared completed eight of nine
passes for 134 yards and a touchdown. He didn’t throw any interceptions in the
game, wasn’t sacked once and his longest pass of the day went for 38 yards.

Warriors crush Crenshaw 56-0: The Sparta Academy Warriors
returned to their winning ways with a bang here Friday night as they crushed
Crenshaw Christian Academy’s Cougars of Luverne, 56-0, at Stuart-McGehee Field.
The victory upped Coach Chuck Ledbetter’s club’s season mark to 5-1.
Quarterback Tim Salter paced Friday night’s win as he
passed for three touchdowns and ran for another as Sparta piled up 408 yards
total offense.
(Richard) Weaver topped the rushers with 89 yards on
eight carries. Salter had 79 on two tries, (Jeff) Brundage 71 on eight, (Craig)
Blackburn 24 on three, Jeremy Baker three on one, and Terry Conway two on
three.
Salter completed seven of 14 passes for 140 yards. (Mark)
Watts had two catches for 74 yards, Blackburn two for 46, (Brian) Waters one
for 16 and (Jason) Baker two for four.
(Other standout Sparta players in that game included
Steven Gall and Jerry Cotten.)
Sparta will meet Stokes Academy of Pine Hill in a homecoming
battle here Friday night. Kickoff at Stuart-McGehee is set for 7:30 with
homecoming festivities before the game and at halftime.
Marion Military Institute’s William Simpson of Evergreen is
expected to see action when the MMI Tigers host the UAB Club football team at 2
p.m. on Sat., Oct. 7. The game will be one of the highlights of Marion’s
Parents/Homecoming Weekend.

Repton Bulldogs win second game: The Repton High School
Bulldogs racked up their second win of the current campaign Thursday night,
downing Excel’s Panthers by a 14 to 6 margin in Repton. The unbeaten Bulldogs
also hold a victory over Baker, Fla.
The Bulldogs scored in the first and third quarters while
holding Excel to a single touchdown in the third period. Robert Lowery and
Nickey Thompson counted for Repton while Wayne Wright went over for the
Panthers.
Gene Madison is head coach of the Repton team.
Aggies win second, whip Tigers 19-6: The Evergreen Aggies
whipped Monroeville 19-6 Friday night in Monroeville for their second win of
the season. They have lost one.
The Aggies jumped in front in the opening seconds when Scott
Cook legged the opening kickoff back 90 yards for a touchdown.
Cook sparked a drive of 75 yards that led to the second
Evergreen score. His pass to Truett Sims covered 22 big yards and he ran 24
yards to a first down on the Tiger 19. He added a 12-yard trip to a first down
at the four and went in from there behind perfect blocking that didn’t give a
Tiger a shot at him as he swept right end.
Kenny Harper, who had one of his best nights on defense and
offense, got the final Evergreen score. A poor snap from center to the Monroe
punter had him in trouble and the Aggie forwards put the pressure on. The
kicker managed to get his punt off on the run and Harper fielded the low screamer
at about his 40. He went the distance with a key block by Sims clearing the
way.

Local Band Will Play At Brewton Opening Game: The Evergreen
Band under the direction of George Printz will go to Brewton Friday night where
it will take part on the program which has been arranged to dedicate the new
high school stadium. The Brewton team will meet the team from Jay, Fla. at that
time in the first game of the season.
Earle Wilson, prominent Brewton businessman and civic
leader, was in Evergreen early this week conferring with Mr. Printz and
completing arrangements for the band’s appearance there Friday night. Mr.
Wilson stated that Brewton’s new stadium is one of the finest to be found in a
city of its size in the entire country. He asked The Courant to extend a
cordial invitation to the people of Evergreen and Conecuh County to attend the
game next Friday night which will be called at eight o’clock.
Among those who attended the Auburn-Birmingham Southern
football game in Montgomery Friday were: Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Jones, Mrs. Marion
M. Cardwell, G.O. Dickey, Mr. and Mrs. W.N. McGehee, Mrs. L. Fiery, Miss Mary
McGehee, Talmadge Stewart, R.G. Kendall Jr., James Lane, Gene Cargill, Vaughn
Fountain, Joe Stanford and Eugene Thornley.
