First baby: JaTavia Latora Mone Simon welcomed the new year in with her mother, Jennifer Simon of Frisco City. JaTavia was born Jan. 1 at 1:05 p.m. in Monroe County Hospital. She weighed seven pounds, five ounces and was 20 inches.

Journal All-stars told: Frisco City head coach Scott Blackmon is The Journal’s football Coach of the Year, and J.F. Shields standout Cory Stallworth and Monroe Academy linebacker Bryan Kilpatrick are the offensive and defensive players of the year, respectively.

The post offices at Buena Vista and Hybart will be permanently closed effective Dec. 31, but the only substantive change at Hybart will be elimination of the postmaster’s job, a U.S. Postal Service official said Tuesday.
Buena Vista will be served by rural route carriers who will handle outgoing and incoming mail. Hybart will have a contracted community post office under supervision of Fred Johnson, and delivery will be by star route carrier.

Excel players honored: Excel High School football team members continue to grab honors in all-state polls.
Rhett Barnes, who was picked to the Birmingham Post-Herald All-State team recently, also was named to the Montgomery Advertiser All-State team along with two teammates, Jeffrey Flowers and Keith Bender. Both Barnes and Flowers were repeaters to the team, having been selected last season.

Coach Paul (Bear) Bryant will take the Alabama Crimson Tide into the Sugar Bowl Wednesday night, Dec. 31, and with him will go two players from Monroe County.
On the team traveling to New Orleans are K.J. Lazenby, a starting offensive tackle from Monroeville, and Joe Dale Harris, a senior split end from Uriah.

JAN. 4, 1951

Pvt. Charles R. Hendrix, 23-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Hendrix of Monroeville, Rt. 1, has been killed in action in Korea.
The death of the Monroeville soldier (on Dec. 28) was the second Monroe County casualty of the present Korean conflict reported here. Sfc. Robert L. Booker of Evergreen, Rt. 1, was killed on Sept. 1, and his death was announced at that time.

The Monroeville Tigers, following a two week’s Christmas and New Year’s vacation period, took up where they left off by whipping Camden, 46-40, last night (Wednesday) in a contest at Camden.
Guard John Arthur Morgan and forward Bobby Moore paced the Tigers attack, scoring 16 and 15 points, respectively. Guard Pink Jackson added 10 points.

Mr. and Mrs. Hershel Conner and sons were guests last week of Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Lee and Miss Alice Lee.

The following is a list of Confederate pensioners on county roll as of Jan. 1, 1951: Easley, Mrs. Susan C. (widow), Beatrice, Ala.; Porter, Mrs. B.A. (widow), Frisco City, Ala.; Sawyer, Mrs. B. (widow), Frisco City, Ala.; Sellers, Mrs. Sadie O. (widow), Peterman, Ala.

Mexia Baptist Church Finished: Special services are being planned at the Mexia Baptist Church Sunday morning (Jan. 14) when the new brick church building there will be dedicated.
The building is now nearing completion, and initial services were held at the new church on the night of Dec. 31. The Rev. R.G. Key, pastor of the church, will preach the dedicatory sermon, which will take the place of the regular worship service.

JAN. 7, 1926

NEW STORE TO BE OPENED NEXT MONTH: Messrs. Finklea & Finklea will open an exclusive dry goods establishment in Monroeville about the first of February, occupying the new brick building recently erected by Mr. Foster Finklea on the east side of the square.
Mr. Charles Finklea, the manager of the new business, is leaving in a few days for the New York and St. Louis markets to purchase stock, which will be fresh and up-to-date in every respect. This firm will specialize in ladies and men’s ready-to-wear and furnishing goods.

Mr. Claude Kilpatrick is the first to break the ice in the campaign for county offices. His announcement for nomination to the office of sheriff will be found in this issue of The Journal. Mr. Kilpatrick has served very efficiently as chief deputy under Sheriff Bowden during the last three years and is thoroughly familiar with the duties of the office and is capable and deserving of promotion.

BUS LINE TO CONNECT FOLEY AND MONROEVILLE: Announcement is made by Mr. C.C. Wiggins of the Monroeville Transfer Co. that they will place a large comfortable passenger bus for service between Bay Minette and Foley, to make connections with the present Monroeville-Bay Minette bus. The bus will make two round trips daily.

VOLUME THIRTY-FOUR: The Journal has passed another milestone in its career, and with the New Year enters its thirty-fourth volume. The circulation of The Journal is larger than ever before, and the fact that on our books the names of many subscribers are retained who have stood by the paper throughout all these changeful years is peculiarly gratifying to the publisher and inspires in him a determination to strive to merit a continuation of their friendship and support.

The Camden railroad is nearing completion. The rails have been laid over half the distance and the roadbed is ready for laying the remainder.

KNIGHTS OF PYTHIAS ELECTION: The semi-annual election of officers of Prairie Queen Lodge No. 167, K. of P., on Friday night last, resulted as follows: Lodge Deputy Grand Chancellor, S.W. Yarbrough; Chancellor Commander, Q. Salter; Vice Chancellor, J.H. Barefield; Prelate, M. Hatter; Master at Arms, S.H. Daily; Master of Finance and Master of Exchequer, J.M. Daniel; Keeper of Records and Seal, C.E. Bizzelle; Master of Work, W.G. McCorvey.

Mr. Ellie Deer is having a commodious structure erected and when complete will be an edifice much to be admired and enjoyed, opposite the old home on the Monroeville and Bells Landing highway, it will be conspicuous and inviting. Mr. Roberts of Perdue Hill, the artisan.

MANISTEE: We hear that the Bear Creek Mill Co. will soon close business at this place.
