Mallory Salter, daughter of Eddie and Julie Salter of
Evergreen, killed her first turkey on Tues., March 31, 1998. The gobbler
weighed 18 pounds, had an 11-inch beard and 1-1/4-inch spurs. Mallory’s father,
who is a World Champion Turkey Caller, used a H.S. Strut mouth call to call the
turkey for Mallory. Mallory recently won her first turkey calling contest and
now that she has killed her first turkey, we can honestly say she is following
in her father’s footsteps.

"Fore" is the word for next Thurs., April 11, when the
Evergreen Golf Club stages its annual Invitational Golf Tournament. Golfers
will enjoy the beauty of the course as well as the play. Here Bill McGehee tees
off on the water hole, No. 8, as pretty a golf hole as there is in all the
world. Bill will join Hugh Ellington in competing for the championship. The
other golfer is Henry Kinzer whose ‘banana ball’ has earned him fame all over
South Alabama.
Coach Wendell Hart’s Evergreen Aggies left their supporters
with high hopes for a successful 1968 season after winning and losing in the
jamboree at T.R. Miller High School Stadium Friday night.
The Aggies lost in the first quarter to Miller, 7-0, but it
could have gone either way.
The Evergreens scored a touchdown themselves on a beautiful
punt return by Hollis Tranum behind superb blocking, but the men in the striped
shirts called it back on a clipping charge.
The Aggies charged back in the third frame and completely
outclassed Greenville in racking up a 7-0 win. Leon (Hoss) Hinson got the score
on a toss from Jimmy Hart, but the stars of the evening were those hard
charging Aggie linemen led by Roger (Big Red) Waller, Eddie Ralls, Jimmie
Hamiter, Ernest Shipp, Forrest Simpson and Elliott (Buck) Quarles.

Work Starts Tuesday On New Athletic Stadium: Actual work
began Tuesday morning on the new athletic stadium at the Evergreen High School,
according to Mayor J.R. Brooks.
Approximately 25 workmen are engaged in grading the site. A
number of trucks and other pieces of grading machinery are being used to move
the dirt and with favorable weather the project should move forward rapidly.
The stadium is being constructed as a WPA project with the
city cooperating. It will involve an expenditure of more than $6,000 and when
finished will be one of the most modern athletic stadiums to be found in a city
the size of Evergreen. It can be used for baseball, football and other athletic
events. It is hoped that it can be completed in time for the local baseball
team to play a portion of its games this year there.
News from Evergreen High School, written by Rubye Darby:
Baseball claimed our attention Friday afternoon when we had two very
interesting games. The Senior II and Senior III girls won over the Senior I
girls by a score of 14 to 2. The Senior III boys won over the Senior II boys by
a score of 7 to 1.
