Chief of Police James Simpson
lets loose his “infamous” change up to open up the Evergreen Little League
season last Friday night. Hunter Bolton, catcher for the 2009 Champion Orioles,
caught the pitch. Looking on is Little League President Brian Martin.
Sparta Academy’s girls and
boys track teams competed April 5 against 21 other Alabama Independent School
teams and had several winners in the competition.
In the field events, Madelyn
Black won first place in the shot-put event and second place in the triple
jump.
(Other Sparta athletes
competing at that meet included Kayla Baggett, Alex Etheridge, Emily Kendrick,
Drew Ann Lambert, Grace Matlock, Sally Matlock, Garrett McClain, Brandy Moorer,
Drayton Rodgers, Erica Palmer, Miranda Smith and Amanda Thompson.)
The Sparta Academy Lady
Warriors held their own Monday against the No. 1-ranked Wilcox Academy Lady
Wildcats in the early innings, but were outdistanced in the late innings.
Tevin Buchanan cocks and
fires a pitch for the Hillcrest High Jaguars in a recent game. The Jags had a
tough season that ended last Friday with a doubleheader against region opponent
Thomasville. The Jags were very young this year with four eighth-graders earning
starting roles.
Tyler Covin brings the heat
as he came on in relief for the Sparta Warriors Monday afternoon. The Warriors
had a tough go against the Wilcox Academy Wildcats.

Willie James Mims Jr. caught
this six-pound bass last Thursday. When asked where he caught the fish, Willie
James replied “in the mouth.”
Mike Kline killed this
gobbler Wednesday morning of last week. The turkey weight 17 pounds, had a
10-inch beard and one-inch spurs.
Top turkey hunters will be
selected by Paul Koenig, The Birmingham News: The search for 10 of Alabama’s
top turkey hunters – and The Birmingham News All-State Turkey Hunting Team – is
on.
Know of someone who’s an
exemplary turkey hunter? That is, both a good hunter and sportsman? I’d like to
hear about it.
Qualifications should be
based on one or more years of turkey hunting and may include how your nominee
does during the spring season. The team will be announced in May; the deadline
for making nominations by mail is Tues., May 7.

bagged a turkey this season. The hunters will start catching up on lost sleep
Saturday as tomorrow is the last day of the season. Sam is exhibiting his first
kill of the season. He added another “Tom” a few days later and when last heard
from was still out after his third one.
Golfers jammed the beautiful
nine-hole Evergreen Golf Club course on April 14 for the club’s annual
invitational tournament won by Jim Ryan of Greenville. It was Ryan’s fourth
Evergreen trophy. Three youthful linksters in the foreground are Robert Rigsby,
Ed Briggs and William Sessions.
A mass meeting of all persons

Evergreen Nine Plays Chapman
Here Today: The first game of the Central Alabama League schedule to be played
on local territory will occur the afternoon when the local nine meets the
aggregation from Chapman at Gantt Field at 3:30 o’clock. Chapman played their
first game of the season at Andalusia last Sunday losing by the score of 7-5.
Next Sunday Evergreen will play Andalusia at Gantt Field. Admission prices are
15 and 25 cents.
Having taken the first game
last Sunday, local players are in fine fettle to win the next two games. Those
who saw the team in action in the first contest are unanimous in their praise
of the fine work done. It is pretty generally conceded that prospects are for a
much stronger team this year than last year or perhaps the year before.
Work is progressing at a fast
pace on the building of a fence around the park and the construction of
grandstand seats. Messrs. M.A. Hansen, S.J. Brundage and R.J. Kendall for a
committee that is looking after this work and they report excellent cooperation
on the part of citizens in donating funds, materials and labor toward the
project.
Evergreen Trims Opp With
Score of 8-4: The local nine got off to a good start last Sunday when they
played Opp in Opp. The players showed marked ability of making a real team for
Evergreen this year. Good teamwork was shown throughout the game.
“Doc” Jones put the boys on
their way and after pitching five innings of his rapid crossfire, was relieved
by Skin Hyde, who also had the boys guessing. Willie Woodham had the locals the
first two innings when five of the six men up took on S.O. and back to the
bench, but Willie soon weakened.
Evergreen had practically an
errorless game with only two to their credit while Opp had nine.
Batteries for the two teams:
Opp, Willie Woodham, pitcher, Bell, catcher; Evergreen, Jones and Hyde,
pitchers, Melton, catcher.
