Peterman home burns Tuesday: A more than a century old home just outside Peterman was leveled by fire Tuesday night, with firefighters from two departments spending over three hours on the scene.
Tuesday at 10:22 p.m. nearly a dozen Peterman firefighters responded with three engines to Wendy Smith’s residence at 1505 County Road 30. When they arrived, the home was fully involved in flames.
Burn Corn firefighters also responded to provide water to Peterman.
The home was constructed of old liter wood, making the blaze intensely hot and allowing the flames to spread quickly.

Vols thump EA 38-0: Monroe Academy rolled to a third straight victory Friday night with a 38-0 thumping of winless Escambia Academy at Canoe.
For a second-straight week, the Volunteers used a strong running game led by junior quarterback Jake McKenzie to key the win. McKenzie finished with 159 yards and three touchdowns on 12 carries, averaging almost 13 yards per carry. He also completed six of eight passes for 74 yards to account for 232 of the Vols’ 372 total yards.
(Other top MA players in that game included Craig Bryan, Hunter Glass, Austin Jordan, Watson Kennedy, Austin McKinley, Brandon McKinley, Connor Morgan, Ethan Nall, Peyton Powell, Justin Rowell and Bryar Settle.)

Shopping center: A contractor began prepping the property adjacent to Walmart where a developer plans to construct a shopping center. The center will include at least a dozen businesses.

SEPT. 12, 2002

Mexia Fire Chief Luther Godwin puts the last touches of paint on the fire department’s new 148-foot radio tower last Thursday at the Mexia fire station at 4875 Highway 47 West. Firefighters painted the sections of tower red, white and blue in honor of all Monroe County firefighters and in memory of all deceased American firefighters, Godwin said. The department began erecting the tower in February.

Blacksher outlasts Shields: J.U. Blacksher High School beat J.F. Shields High School 26-20 Friday night in Beatrice improving to 1-1 on the season and 1-0 in region play.
Friday’s win snapped a 13-game losing streak for Blacksher that dated back to Oct. 20, 2000 when Blacksher beat McKenzie High School 19-13 in overtime in McKenzie.
(Blacksher’s head coach was Mark Chaney and outstanding Blacksher players in that game included James Akins, Herbert Brooks, Chris Dunn, Pete Glass, Matthew Jeter, Kenneth Johnston, Devin King, Justin Lowe, Corey Nall, Sherron Parker, Brandon Peavy, Josh Plant, Ben Turberville, Cliff Turk and Jeffery Wilkins. Top players for Shields included Charles Clausell, Joseph Manuel and Ernest McCorvey. Phillip Griffin was head coach at Shields.)

The Monroe County Commission announced last week that the new jail will be built off Winston Street in Monroeville. On Tuesday, the commission agreed to finance the construction of the jail through a $6,715,000 20-year bond issue.
Russell Stutts of Joe Jolly & Co., Inc. of Montgomery presented 20- and 25-year proposals to the commission at Tuesday’s meeting in Monroeville.

SEPT. 10, 1992

New landmark: The dome of the Old Monroe County Courthouse has dominated the downtown Monroeville landscape for generations, but the new water tower is fast becoming the dominant image. Because of the angel of this photo, the huge water tower appears to dwarf the delicate Old Courthouse dome. The 127-foot, two-million-gallon water tower is now being primed for a two-tone beige paint job, with the city name and logo yet to be added.

Whippets roll by Eagles 30-0: Frisco City High School rolled past A.L. Johnson High School Friday in Thomaston, posting a 30-0 victory.
A balanced offense that generated 183 yards rushing and 86 yards passing sparked the victory, according to the Whippets’ head football coach Scott Fountain.
(Top players for FCHS in that game included Adrian Bullard, Chris Davison, Tony Gibbs, Derrick Harris, Bryne Malone, Shannon Richardson, William Sheets, A.J. White and Eric Williams.)

Excel’s second annual “Old Fashioned Family Day” is set for Oct. 3. This year’s celebration will include a program and parade to honor B.J. Wallace, who recently signed with the Montreal Expos and was a member of the 1992 U.S. Olympic baseball team.
A group of 12 young women, 15 to 18, will be selected to serve on the Magnolia Court, hostesses for the town celebration.
Highlights of the day will include arts and crafts and a garage sale, beginning at 9 a.m.; a parade, featuring Wallace in a horse and buggy and the Excel High School Band of Gold at 11 a.m. and a noon program featuring music by Mitzi Ramsey, Amy Scruggs and Shirley Scruggs and speeches by James Murphy, Excel mayor, and Jeff Kahn, Wallace’s baseball recruiter.

SEPT. 9, 1982

Larry’s Ambulance Service’s exclusive franchise to operate in the Monroeville police jurisdiction was extended for two years by the City Council Tuesday.
The ambulance franchise, first adopted two years ago and renewed Tuesday, gives Larry and Barbara Mitchell, doing business as Larry’s Ambulance Service, “the exclusive right, privilege and franchise to operate ambulances and ambulance coach service with the police jurisdiction of the City of Monroeville” until the council determines otherwise or for no more than two years.

The Monroe County High School Tiger football team squeezed out a 7-0 win Friday night in Monroeville over the J.F. Shields High School Panther gridsters.
The Tigers managed to dodge several close calls in the contest to maintain the 7-0 advantage and win.
(Howard Busby was MCHS’s head coach that season, and top MCHS players in that game included Chester Ackinson, Anthony Broughton, Derek Hale, Frank Jones, Donald Ray Kilpatrick, Edgar Lee McCarthy, Joe Rogers and Mark Watson. John Wiley was head coach at Shields, and top Shields players in that game included Eddie Nettles, Lloyd Tucker and Timothy Tucker.)

Ronnie Ray of Ray’s Ace Hardware in Frisco City will be attending the Ace Hardware convention and exhibit in Atlanta Sept. 23-26.
He will be among several thousand Ace dealers and their staffs expected to visit over 600 exhibits of leading manufacturers who will be unveiling new products and offering special show-priced merchandise.

SEPT. 14, 1972

T. Jeffie Jones was elected mayor of Frisco City and Gilbert Norris was named to the city council in the only contested races in that community’s run-off election Tuesday.
Jones polled 225 votes to 188 for Ira W. Luker in the mayor’s race, while Norris edged by Jimmy Tatum, 204 votes to 196, in the run-off for place No. 4 on the council.
Other members of the council who will take office in October are W.P. Albritton, Place No. 1; James Erpel Wilson, Place No. 2; James McKinley, Place No. 3; and Miss Susan B. Phillips, Place No. 5.

The Excel High School Panthers won the second game of their 10-game schedule Friday night, Sept 8, and broke the so-called jinx held over Excel by Frisco City. It had been 17 years since the last team from Excel had crossed the creek to return a winner.
(Excel, under head coach Lee Holladay, won that game 12-0, and standout players for Excel included Rhett Barnes, Jack Booth, Pat Browning, Roger George, Joe Dale Ikner, Mitch Ledkins, Rex McCants and Mike McQueen. Top players for FCHS included Al Lambert and Ronnie Browning.)

Rep. Maston Mims of Uriah has been appointed to the finance committee of the Alabama Women’s Commission.
He is serving with Mrs. Retha Deal Wynot of Gadsden, chairman of the committee and Quinton R. Bowers of Birmingham. The Alabama Women’s Commission was established last September with the purpose of improving the status of women in Alabama.
Mims also serves as chairman of the legislature’s prison study commission.
