Sparta Academy’s varsity football team improved to 2-0 on
the season Friday night with a 28-25 win over Crenshaw Christian at
Stuart-McGehee Field in Evergreen.
The win came after an unusually long rain delay in which
officials prevented both teams from taking the field due to lightning, thunder
and rain in the area. The game kicked off around 9 p.m. and ended shortly
before midnight.
Quarterback Ethan Roberts led the Warriors on offense with
eight pass completions for 140 yards and two touchdowns. Roberts also ran the
ball five times for 35 yards.
(Other outstanding Sparta players in that game included Tristan
Crutchfield, Tyler Davis, Dalton Draper, Tyler Hanks, Zane Lambert, Todd Mayo,
Stone Riley, Lanse Robbins, Dakota Stokes, Ethan Tyree and Griffin Weaver.)
Hillcrest High School’s varsity football team saw its record
drop to 1-1 on the season Friday night after falling to 3A Region 1 opponent
Opp, 34-32, at Brooks Memorial Stadium in Evergreen.

of touchdowns during Tuskegee University’s season opener Saturday afternoon, a
30-17 loss to Alabama A&M in Tuskegee.

passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns, including an 87-yarder with 5:27 left

Aggies meet Atmore here Friday: The Evergreen High Aggies
pry off the lid of the 1964 season here Friday night against their traditional
foe, the Atmore Blue Devils. Kickoff will be at 8 p.m. in Brooks Stadium.
Coach John Law Robinson and line coach Henry Allman were not
happy over the results of the jamboree here Friday night when the Aggies lost
both of their segments. However, in reviewing the game films they did find
quite a few bright spots.
The Aggies were heavily scouted by both Atmore and
Andalusia, their first two opponents, and Robinson kept them “under wraps.”
Only four offensive plays were used and a “goal line” defensive alignment.
(Players for Evergreen that season included Scott Cook, Paul
Deason, Alvin Dees, Mike Fields, Kenny Harper, Tommy Hartley, Ronnie Hayes,
Johnny Huggins, Mike Moorer, Truett Sims, Calvin Smith, Bob Tanner, Brent
Thornley, Wayne Tolbert and Jimmy Warren.)
Lyeffion Jackets open in Excel: The Lyeffion High School
Yellow Jackets will open their 1964 football season Saturday night playing
Excel in Excel. The kickoff is set for 8 p.m.
The Jackets should have an improved team this year as a
large number of lettermen and starters from the 1963 club are back for more
play.
Lyeffion’s new coach Rollin Moseley and his assistant
DeWayne Adams have been drilling their charges at a fast pace to get ready for
the opener. The game last year ended in a 7-7 tie.

THE EVERGREEN STAR
Baseball: According to announcement the Brewton and
Evergreen baseball clubs crossed bats on the latter’s diamond on Thursday last
and waged a contest that was not only exceedingly interesting but somewhat
remarkable in results. At the end of the ninth inning, the score showed a tie
and so a tenth inning had to be played. The Brewtons going first to the bat
were not allowed to proceed to the first base before retiring; the Evergreens
scoring one with one man out, were awarded the victory by a score of 15 to 14.
Though the score shows the game to be a poor one, there was perhaps some as
fine playing as was ever made by amateurs. The home battery played faultlessly
and were supported by some excellent fielding. Left fielder C.R. Taliaferro
made two running catches that would do credit to any professional.
As the visiting club was composed mostly of strangers we
were unable to learn their names, but certain it is, that their pitcher has no
superiors among amateurs, and few in the baseball world.
The telegraph informs us that they defeated the Greenville
club the next day by a score of 16 to 9.
The match game of baseball which had been announced to be
played by the Brewton and Evergreen clubs on Thursday last ought to have been
announced as “Evergreen against the State,” since the visiting club was
composed of players from various other cities and communities and really
contained but three of their own members. It is said that one of the visiting
players was from another state, the correctness of which we have no doubt.
To have been victorious with such an advantage, would have
been no credit to any club, but to suffer defeat under such circumstances is
little short of ignoble.
