Sparta edges Catherine 28-24:
Sparta Academy’s Warriors ended their 1981 football season by downing the
Catherine Academy Colts, 28-24, in a “shoot out” Friday night at Catherine.
Sparta used a balanced attack
to score four touchdowns and two-point conversions after two of those.
Ed Carrier led the rushing
attack with 104 yards on 20 carries. Mike Mixon picked up 32 yards and two
touchdowns on nine tries. Joe McInvale netted six on four and Dewan Salter
three on five.
Salter had a super night
passing as he completed six of 10 attempts, good for 92 yards and a touchdown.
The ninth-grade quarterback also passed to Mike Mixon for both of the extra
point conversions. Carrier caught two passes for 41 yards and a touchdown; Russ
Raines, two for 30 yards; McInvale, one for 12; and Al Etheridge, one for nine.
Mixon scored on runs of nine
and six yards, and Carrier on a 39-yard toss from Salter and on an 80-yard
kickoff return.

Aggies Fall To Panthers 28-7
Last Friday Night: The Evergreen Aggies suffered their sixth defeat of the
season last Friday night as the Milton Panthers spoiled their homecoming with a
decisive 28 to 7 victory. The crippled Aggies managed their score on the last
play of the game to keep it from being a shutout.
With Harper and Ellington
grinding out the yards in short bursts and a 10-yard pass from Grace to
English, the Aggies moved to their only score as time ran out. Ellington
circled right end for the final four yards and the touchdown. Frazier booted
the extra point.
Aggies Face Old Rival T.R.
Miller Tigers In Brewton Friday Night: Without any let-up from a rugged
schedule and the constant presence of an injury jinx, Coach Wendell Hart’s
“Cripples” will limp to Brewton to do battle with arch-rival, T.R. Miller, this
Friday (tomorrow) night.
Miller, once a mighty power
in South Alabama football, but one of the lesser lights for the past several
seasons, has returned to a prominent position with an outstanding record this
season. They will rule as a definite favorite due to comparative records of the
two teams. Miller handed Frisco City their first defeat of the season, 14-7, a
few weeks back and Frisco in turn walloped the Aggies to the tune of 28-13,
which makes Miller mathematically a 22-point favorite over the Aggies.
The Aggies have won over the
Tigers for the past four straight years by decisive margins, so the Miller boys
will be anxious to get back in the win column against Evergreen.

Evergreen Smothers
Castleberry 83-0: The Evergreen Aggies green wave rolled over Castleberry to
the tune of 83 to 0 in the game played here Friday. From the first minute of
play, the outcome of the game was never in doubt. In the first three minutes of
play, Quarles, stellar backfield ace of Evergreen, made a beautiful run of 45
yards to account for the first touchdown and Goodson, Captain of the team, went
over for the extra point.
The game was featured by
beautiful runs, hard tackles and accurate passing. The Castleberry boys fought
until the final whistle a courageous and uphill fight. The Evergreen backs
ripped the line of Castleberry and their blocking was superb. Every man in
Evergreen’s line played a good game, holding Castleberry to small gains.
At the end of the half, the
score stood, 33-0, and at this time Coach McInnis sent in scrubs to replace the
regulars, but still that green wave rolled on, adding points and game ended
with the ball in Evergreen’s possession deep into Castleberry territory.
Evergreen’s team has greatly
improved, and great things are expected of them in the future games on their
schedule. Quarles, Goodson, Cargill and Hagood made up the backfield. Quarles
was the hero of the game with his tackling and superb field running, although
every man on the team was fighting and giving the best in him.
Much interest centers on the
practice of this week for, on Friday, Evergreen’s Aggies venture to Red Level
to play one of the hardest games on schedule. The team is preparing for a hard
fight.
