Our local ESPN College Football Pick ‘Em contest came to an
end on Saturday, and Casey Grant held on to win this year’s 15-week contest by
correctly picking the outcomes of 99.8 percent (out of 150 games) this college
football season. Having won this local contest, Grant is without a doubt among
the best college football prognosticators in and around Conecuh County. Not
only does he receive all the high honors and accolades that go along with this
prestigious title, but he also might be someone good to talk to if you want to
know who is going to win the national championship this year.
Clint Hyde finished in second place with 112 total points,
just two points behind Grant. Three contestants finished our local contest tied
for third place with 111 points each. They were Blake Stringer, Mark Cotten and
Drew Skipper, who finished No. 1 in last year’s contest.
Jesse Jordan and Brett Loftin finished tied for sixth place
with 110 points each. Arthur Ingram III and Justin Chandler finished tied for
eighth place with 106 points each. Austin Weaver and I finished tied for tenth
place with 105 points each.

This year’s Army-Navy game will be played this coming
Saturday at 2 p.m. at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. The game will be
televised on national television on CBS. As of Monday, Navy was a 10.5-point
favorite.
Navy enters the game with a 9-2 overall record and ranked
No. 23 in the nation. Army enters the game with a 5-7 overall mark and ranked
first among FBS Independents.
On paper, Navy looks to be the top dog in this year’s
meeting, but it’s a rivalry game, and you know that old saying about throwing
the records out the window. Army will likely play their best game of the season
on Saturday, so it will probably be a very entertaining game to watch,
especially when you take into account that it’ll be about the only real game on
television.

I was disappointed by how the New Orleans Saints lost to the
San Francisco 49ers, 48-46, on Sunday at the Superdome. I just knew the Saints
were going to pull it out, but they still came up short in a game that saw a
total of 94 points scored. New Orleans dropped to 10-3 with the loss, and the
49ers improved to 11-2, which will probably be enough for them to get a first-round
bye in the playoffs.
New Orleans will have an extra day to lick their wounds this
week as they aren’t scheduled to return to action until this coming Monday
night when they will play the Indianapolis Colts on Monday Night Football. That
game is scheduled to kick off at 7:15 p.m. on ESPN. The Colts enter that game
with a 6-7 overall record and fresh off a 38-35 loss to the Tampa Bay Bucs. As
of Monday afternoon, New Orleans was a nine-point favorite over the Colts.
