Hines blocks five shots in win: Evergreen’s Chris Hines
blocked a career-high five shots and garnered praise from his head coach as
Alabama’s men’s basketball team beat South Alabama, 72-50, Wednesday of last
week in Tuscaloosa.
Hines, who started at forward and logged 27 minutes of
playing time, finished the game with five blocks, seven rebounds, eight points,
two assists and a steal.
“I thought Chris Hines, also early in the game, gave us
good minutes there inside with his rebounding and his scoring,” Alabama head
coach Anthony Grant said in a post-game press conference.
Later in the press conference, Grant noted that Hines is
known for and takes great pride in his ability to hustle for the ball.
Sparta Academy’s varsity girls basketball team captured
first place at this year’s Lowndes Academy Holiday Tournament. Members of the
team are Drew Ann Lambert, Madelyn Black, Savannah Brown, April Palmer, Jessica
Coleman, Rachel Riley, Emily Booker, Stephanie Martin, Ashton Raines, Grace
Matlock, Alex Etheridge and head coach Russ Brown. Black and Brown were named
to the all-tournament team, and Palmer was named the tournament’s most valuable
player.
Justin T. Dees, 17, of Nymph shot this 170-pound, 11-point
buck on the afternoon of Nov. 20 while hunting “in the woods.” Dees is the son
of Jeppie and Janice Dees of Nymph.

Sparta Academy’s varsity girls basketball team beat Crenshaw
Christian, 47-39, on Nov. 30, 1999 in Evergreen.
Scoring in double figures for the Lady Warriors were Ashley
Hammonds with 14 points and Katie Etheridge with 13 points. Also putting points
on the board were Sally Hartley with nine points, Laura Wiggins with six
points, Jill Pate with three points and Jessica Bennett with two points.
(Other players on Sparta’s varsity girls team that year
included Susan Ivey, Mary Robinson and Jessica Armuelles.)
Sparta’s varsity boys suffered a 55-53 loss to Crenshaw that
night.
Jake Adams played his best game of the season last Tuesday,
putting 23 points on the board. Also scoring in double figures was Lee Booker
with 13 points. Rounding out the scoring were Kyle Johnston with seven points,
John McKenzie and Derrick Williams with four points each and Justin Tranum with
two points.
On Dec. 2, 1999 in Evergreen, Sparta’s varsity boys suffered
an 86-63 loss to Escambia Academy.
Scoring double figures for the Warriors were Lee Booker and
John McKenzie with 12 points each. They were followed closely by Derrick
Williams with nine points, Justin Tranum eight points and Rusty Salter with
five points. Rounding out the scoring for the Warriors were Kyle Johnston,
Jimmy Hyde and Tyler Petrey with four points.

Ted Watson, defensive line coach at the University of West
Georgia, Bermuda native, and former Repton High School football player, will be
the guest speaker at the Evergreen Aggie Football Banquet Dec. 14 at 7 p.m.
At Repton, Watson was a standout at offensive guard and
linebacker for four years under Coach Hugh Wilson. As a high school player, he
was named to three all-state teams and was named to the Birmingham News’ super
all-star team his senior year.
He was awarded a football scholarship to Jacksonville State
University, where he started 44 consecutive games for a school record. He was
an all-conference performer at defensive tackle and was the team’s most
valuable lineman in 1982. The Gamecocks went to the NCAA playoffs during three
of his four seasons at JSU.
The Sparta Warriors boys and girls varsity teams defeated
Crenshaw Academy in Luverne on Dec. 7, but the Junior Boys lost their game,
according to Sparta Sports Information Director Byron Warren Jr.
The Warriors boys varsity edged Crenshaw, 80-74, as four
players scored in double digits. Brandon Salter and Scott Salter had 17 points
each; Danny Reed, 16; Tim Brantley, 13; Mark Rigsby and Jason West, six each;
and Brian Bybee, five.
Sparta’s girls raced to an easy 54-33 victory. Kim Searcy
had 18 points, 12 rebounds and one steal.

James Reaves, son of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Adams, Rt. D,
Evergreen, was awarded the D.T. Stuart Sportsmanship Trophy at the Quarterback
Club’s Annual Football Banquet last Thursday night at Evergreen High School.
Auburn U. Backfield Coach Buck Bradberry, featured speaker
on the program, was introduced by Aggie Assistant Coach, John Law Robinson.
Four members of the 1960 Aggies received post season
recognition. Coach Wendell Hart announced Leon Stinson made Class A All State
and Rebel Conference teams. James Reaves and Mike Miller made the all Rebel
Conference team and Billy Melton has received an offer of grant-in-aid
scholarship to Auburn University.
Members of the team who received letters were Billy Melton,
James Reaves, Billy Bateman, Johnny Ivey, Jerry Watson, Brown Boykin, Phillip
Brown, Jerry Windham, Bobby Potts, Mike Miller, Jimmy Dunn and Rhett Smith, all
seniors.
Returnees who lettered were Leon Stinson, H.W. Ward, Duncan
Roberts, Bonner Ridgeway, Jimmy Kelley, Wayne Blair, Bobby Lynch, Donald Jones,
Ronald Jones, Jimmy Weaver and team manager Robert Brooks.
Cheerleaders who lettered were Joy Davis, Mary Hunter,
Frieda Griggers Carrier, Jackie Thornley, Barbara Stinson and Mary Kay Eddins.
Captains for next year were not named.
Senator Bob Kendall announced at the end of the program that
the QB Club will give tickets to members of the 1960 Aggies and cheerleaders
for the Senior Football game at Mobile in January.

Two boys on the Evergreen High School football team were
given first team positions, and three others gained mention on the Montgomery
Advertiser-Alabama Journal All-State Football Squad, released last Sunday.
Richard Tyler and Ward Alexander, captain and co-captain,
respectively, for the Evergreen team were named to the first team, and Randy
White, Wayne Douglas and Buck Lewis were given honorable mention on the squad.
The Evergreen Aggies open their 1954-1955 basketball
schedule with A and B games against Georgiana in Memorial Gym tomorrow (Friday)
night.
Coach Wendell Hart lists his probable varsity starting
lineup as Wayne Douglas and Ward Alexander at forwards, Randy White at center,
and Jimmy Frazier and Tommy Melton at guards. The Evergreen attack is led by
high scoring Randy White, who is only a junior.
Number two men at each position in the varsity attack are
Robert King and Ronnie Edson at guards, Wayne Frazier at center; and Joe Hagood
and Wendell Tolbert at forwards.
Castleberry High School dropped a close 52-42 basketball
game to the W.S. Neal Eagles in a game played in Brewton Tuesday night. Chavers
Hart, Castleberry forward, and Weaver, center, led the scoring for the losers
with 14 markers each.
