Evergreen weather observer Harry Ellis reported 1.91 inches of rain on March 1. He reported a high of 79 degrees on Feb. 28 and a low of 28 on March 4. Total rainfall for the month of February 2007 was 2.27 inches.

Local Cub Scouts held their annual Pinewood Derby last Friday night at the Evergreen Church of Christ. Winners in the Wolf Cub division were Charlie Brock, first place; Stone Riley, second place; and Hunter Bolton, third place.

A large crane was brought in last week to lift roofing repair materials to the top of the new Conecuh County Courthouse to stop a leak in a portion of the new buildings. Completion of the courthouse is anticipated to be this month. The courthouse will hopefully open to the public sometime in April.

Pia Cumagun, a junior at Sparta Academy, has been selected to attend Alabama Girls State at Troy University this summer. She is the daughter of Dr. Maria Cumagun of Evergreen. Pia is shown with Sparta Academy headmaster Wayne Hammonds receiving a check from Mrs. Patricia Fowler, representing the Bank of Evergreen, her sponsor for this event.

Library expansion soon to be reality: The long-awaited expansion of the Evergreen Public Library could be a reality in the foreseeable future. The Evergreen City Council agreed at their regular meeting Tuesday night to meet with officials from the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture on March 27 to discuss a loan to make the expansion a reality.

Evergreen weather observer Earl Windham reported 1.59 inches on March 4. He reported a high of 76 on March 6 and a low of 36 on March 6.

Pictures of former mayors being sought: Pictures of all former mayors of Evergreen are needed to carry out a project by the Pilot Club of Evergreen. The Pilots want to get enlargements of the pictures made and place pictures of the mayors in the council meeting room at City Hall.
Pictures of some mayors have already been obtained, but a number are still needed, according to Mrs. Correan Salter. She said that any size picture is acceptable as enlargements can be made. She added that the original pictures will be returned to those loaning them to the Pilots.
Anyone having pictures of the following mayors, or information as to someone who might be contacted to obtain pictures, is asked to contact Mrs. Salter (mayors and years served):

MARCH 9, 1972

A tornado struck during the bad weather last Thursday morning and demolished a lumber shed at Conecuh Lumber Co. and damaged other buildings. The loss was estimated at $5,000 to $8,000, but, fortunately, there were no injuries.

A tragic accident that shocked this community and county claimed the life of Darin Andrew Gearhart, 10, Sunday afternoon. The youth was killed instantly when he fell from a tractor engaged in bush hogging at Belleville.

Mr. and Mrs. Pete Wolff III of Evergreen announce the birth of a son, Pete Wolff IV, on Feb. 29, at McMillan Memorial Hospital, Brewton.

Navy Petty Officer Third Class Larry L. Andrews, son of Mr. Roland Andrews of Rt. D, Evergreen, has completed nearly two months of continuous operations in the Indian Ocean and South China Sea aboard the nuclear powered aircraft carrier, USS Enterprise.
The Enterprise was ordered to the Indian Ocean during the height of the Indo-Pakistani war in the event it became necessary to evacuate Americans from East Pakistan.
A visit to Subic Bay in the Phillipines ended the arduous deployment.

Reward now $1,100 in Salter beating: A reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the persons responsible for the beating and robbing of Purnell and Broughton Satler was increased to $1,100 this week.
The two elderly brothers were viciously beaten and robbed at their home in Burnt Corn some months ago.

Local Café Owner Dies Following Week’s Illness: Lewis Snyder Richardson, age 50, owner and operator of the City Café, died at the local hospital Fri., March 8, after an illness of about one week. Mr. Richardson moved to Evergreen from Kremmling, Colorado about six years ago. He had owned and operated the City Café for the past five years.

Construction Starts On Manti-Midway Road, To Be Completed In About 100 Working Days: Construction was begun this week on an important link in the state’s east-west highway system in northern Conecuh County
The contract on the Manti-Midway road was let to the Watson-Strawhorn Construction Co. of Fulton, Miss. for about $138,000. The road is 9.2 miles long and connects with other east-west roads, crossing the state.
The new road will pass through the communities of Manti, Annex, Asbury Church and will continue through Midway. At Midway it will join up with Highway 83 and 47. It will start at the Conecuh-Butler County lines, extending Highway 106.

Sgt. First Class Joseph A. Cook, whose wife, Annie, and parents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard M. Cook, live in Evergreen, Ala., is enroute to Germany as part of “Operation Gyroscope,” the Army’s unit rotation plan. Sgt. Cook is a member of the 714th Tank Battalion, formerly located at Fort Benning, Ga., which is replacing the 826th Tank Battalion in Germany.

FIDDLER’S CONVENTION: Lets all go to the City School Auditorium Friday April 1 at 8 p.m., the Order of the Eastern Star is putting on a “Fiddler’s Convention” and someone will win the first prize, a $25 violin and bow. Admission is 10 cents and 25 cents. Hurry and enroll in this contest by sending in your name to Miss Verna McCreary, Chairman.

PLAY AT LYEFFION: The Lyeffion School will present the “Adventures of Grandpa” at the school auditorium Friday night, March 11, at 7:30. Admission 15 cents and 25 cents.

Casket Company Moves Plant To Evergreen: The Georgiana Casket Co., organized and operated continuously at Georgiana since 1917, has moved its factory, offices and complete equipment to Evergreen, the move having been completed the latter part of last week. It is located in the building commonly known as the Conecuh Motor Co. building, adjacent to O.C. McGehee’s Service Station, just off West Front St. This building has been remodeled throughout to fit it for the factory’s use.
The casket factory was acquired Aug. 29, 1931 by W.C. Galloway, prominent and successful business man of Evergreen, and since that time has been managed by him. Mr. Galloway has been a citizen of this place for the past 12 years and has been connected with a number of business enterprises during his residence here.
