Repton Bulldogs move to state
semi-finals: The news for Repton High School basketball fans is good and more
good.
The good new is that Bill
Dukes tossed in a short jump hook shot with eight second left to give the
Bulldogs a 61-60 win over Collinsville in the opening round of the State Class
1A Basketball Tournament at the University of Alabama’s Memorial Coliseum
Tuesday morning.
The more good news is that
Dukes, a 6-foot 7-inch center, is only a junior and will be back to play for
Repton again next year.
Meanwhile, these 1982-83
Bulldogs will be gunning for the state title. They meet undefeated Loachapoka
High School of Lee County at nine o’clock Friday morning in the semi-finals
with the finals set Saturday afternoon.
(Other top players on
Repton’s team that season included James North. Hugh Wilson was Repton’s head
coach.)
Sparta Academy’s Warriors
will be represented on both the boys and girls All-Star teams in the Alabama
Private Schools Association State All-Star Games to be played Saturday at
Huntingdon College, Montgomery.
In addition, Sparta head
coach Richard Brown will help coach the South Team.
Cheri Johnson was chosen for
the Girls South All-Star team while Chris Blatz, only senior on the Warrior
squad this year, was named to the Boys All-Star team.

George “Pat” Murphy, genial
Irishman, has been placed in charge of the Evergreen baseball club for the
coming season. Murphy is a student of baseball lore, and an enthusiast par
excellence. As Pat is known to be a stickler for discipline, it is safe to
predict a club of physically fit lads will represent Conecuh County’s capital.
Plenty of good material to draw from is another item in favor of Evergreen
having a good club on the field.
Pat Murphy is contemplating
daily workouts for local baseball hopefuls. An epidemic of sore muscles may be
expected, which will in no way hurt the liniment business. (Drug stores take
special notice!)
Conecuh County sportsmen are
determined in their efforts to prevent pollution of streams by “fish hogs.”
Various methods of illegal and destructive fishing are coming in for attention
from state officials as a result of these efforts.
Use of nets, traps and other
forms of destructive fishing, as well as the use of lime and other chemicals as
a means of obtaining fish will be rather a hazardous undertaking in this
section this summer.
According to the state
department of game and fisheries, Conecuh is admirably situated for fish
culture. Abundance of fine material conditions with ideal climate, help to make
the territory a natural raising ground for practically all species of fresh
water fish. With a little cooperation from man, in a protective way, this
county’s fishing facilities would be among the best in the state.
