Greenies Continue Lead; Down Atmore, Flomaton: The Evergreen
Greenies continued to set the pace in the Tri-County League race with double
wins over Atmore and Flomaton last week. These four wins ran the locals’
winning streak to seven straight.
Manager Hart will take his league-leading team to Flomaton
Thursday for a doubleheader with the league’s third place nine. Although
Flomaton has yet to beat the Greenies, they are always hard to defeat on their
own playing field. Carpenter, a southpaw who defeated Flomaton in the second
game of Sunday’s twin bill, and Edsel Johnson (5-0) will probably be the
starting moundsmen for the mid-week doubleheader. McCullough, a team that has
always given the locals a good game, will be hosts for a single contest Sunday.
Hart (13-3) will handle the mound duties for this affair.
Atmore lost their chance to take over the number one spot
last week by dropping both ends of a doubleheader to the locals. After Hart had
let them down with four hits in the opener, Edsel Johnson came back in the
night cap with a seven hitter. The Greenies were never in danger in the initial
battle which they won by a 9-1 margin. James Carpenter hammered out four
singles in as many trips to the plate to take the batting honors for the
locals. Horne, who made his debut with the Greenies in the second game, and
Harper led the final contest with two hits each.
Flomaton gave the Greenies very little trouble in either
game of Sunday’s twin bill which the locals took by score of 15-0 and 10-5.
Manager Hart racked up his 13th victory of the season in the opener
and Carpenter notched his first triumph in the second game. Edsel Johnson,
Bolton and Nobles led the batting in the first contest with two bingles apiece
while Edsel Johnson drove out three hits in the last game to capture batting
honors for the day.
Edsel Johnson continued to set the pace in the hitting
department with an average of .433, followed by Ottis Johnson (.406) and
Carpenter (.383). Johnson also took over the runs-batted-in lead with a high of
23 followed by Harper with 21 and stole his 11th base of the season
to pace the base runners in this department.
