The Hillcrest varsity cheerleaders attended UCA Cheerleader Camp at Troy State University June 9-12. While at camp, the squad worked hard to learn new cheers, chants, dances and stunts. All of their hard work and enthusiasm paid off each night during evaluation. The squad won the “Spirit Stick” two nights in a row, two excellent ribbons for cheers and superior ribbons, including one for a dance they learned before camp. Two additional superior ribbons were awarded to Annie Garrett and LeAnne McKenzie for their high placing in the individual push-off competition. On Friday, the final day of camp, the squad was awarded with two superior trophies rewarding them for the excellent job they had done. A lot of time and hard work has been put in by the cheerleaders in order to prepare for the upcoming football season. The 1996-97 Hillcrest varsity cheerleaders are LeAnne McKenzie, Daryl Hahn, Captain, Lameka Rankins, Co-Captain, Chasitdy Lewis, Annie Garrett, Laquisia Williams, Courtney Cook, Aleisha Josephy, Sabrina Baxter and Coretta Rogers. They invite everyone to come out and support the Hillcrest sports program this fall.

The Sparta Academy Warriors started fall practice Monday afternoon in shorts. Sparta along with Hillcrest High School and all other schools in the state began football practice on the first official day of practice.

The Conecuh County High School cheerleaders attended a cheerleader clinic at Troy State University, sponsored by the Alabama High School Athletic Association. The following cheerleaders are admiring the trophy they won on performance while participating in the clinic. They are Rita Salter, Charlene Baker, Rebecca Cain, Marolyn Whittle, Janice Hardin, Vicki Pope, Cathy Pettis and Toni Littles.

These beauties will be inspiring the Sparta Academy Warriors at football games this fall. The cheerleaders recently attended the second annual clinic sponsored by the Alabama Private School Athletic Association for three days at Judson College in Marion. Urging their Warriors on will be Linda Jones, Kitty Horton, Martha Gaines, Kristin Nielsen, Angie Taylor, Beth Harper and Prather Nielsen.

Saturday was a big, big day for this happy bunch of boys who were among those playing in the Evergreen Junior Baseball League this summer. Accompanied by several of the League officials and managers, they left Evergreen at noon aboard a charter bus for Atlanta to see the Braves play the Mets that night. When they left the game in the eighth inning the Mets were leading 16 to 3. The group arrived home about three Sunday morning, tired to the bone but bubbling with happiness after seeing a Major League game.
