“Sparta Academy held its annual athletic awards banquet Tuesday of last week and a number of student-athletes took home top awards.
“Michael Cook received the Jerry Peacock Memorial Award, and Will Booker received the D.T. Stuart Football Sportsmanship Trophy. Ashton Raines received the Wayne Peacock Girls Basketball Sportsmanship Trophy.”
“Everyone is invited to attend a ‘Black & White’ intra-squad scrimmage game featuring Hillcrest High School’s junior varsity and varsity football teams tomorrow (Friday) night at Brooks Memorial Stadium.”
“A number of Hillcrest High School track and field athletes competed in the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s 4A-6A state championship track and field meet Friday and Saturday in Gulf Shores.
“William Ferguson finished seventh in the Class 4A boys 200-meter dash, running the race in 23.49 seconds.
“Terrance Lyons placed seventh in the 4A boys 110-meter hurdles, running the distance in 16.52 seconds.
“Lyons also finished tenth in the 4A boys 300-meter hurdles, finishing the race in 43.89 seconds.”
“The Jefferson Davis Community College Lady Warhawks came to the Evergreen Municipal Park recently to hold a softball clinic for the new girls softball teams of the Cal Ripken League.”

“The Baby Eagles will present an encore of the Pictorial Essay ‘C.C.T.S. – The Time of the Eagles,’ spanning the 1898-1970 era on Sat., May 11, from 12 noon to 5 p.m. at East’s Barber Shop, 407 Perryman St., Evergreen. The public is cordially invited to attend.”
“Hillcrest Athletic Boosters will meet Mon., May 13, at 6:30 p.m. at the Hillcrest cafetorium. Parents with children participating in any sport or cheerleading are urged to attend.”
“Hillcrest football is sponsoring a car wash on Sat., May 11, from 8 a.m. until at the Hardee’s parking lot. All donations will be greatly appreciated.”

“Sparta’s Lynn Hyde wins state ‘jump’: Lynn Hyde, a junior at Sparta Academy in Evergreen, leaped 16 feet, four inches to win the state championship in the Alabama Private Schools Association State Track Meet held in Selma last week. Lynn also finished second in the 440-yard run with a time of 60.43 seconds.
“Lynn, daughter of Evergreen Postmaster Gene and Mrs. Judy Hyde of Evergreen, will compete in the Southeast Tri-State Track Meet in Jackson, Miss. this week.”
“Four Repton High baseball players in all-star tilt: The 38th Annual Lions Club All-Star Baseball Games, co-sponsored by the Alabama High School Athletic Association and the Lions of Alabama, has been scheduled for Sun., May 17. A doubleheader will be played at Johnson Park in Andalusia at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. The two teams will be comprised of high school seniors from Baldwin, Covington, Conecuh, Butler, Geneva and Escambia counties.
“Baseball scouts and coaches from professional, college and junior college teams will be at the games to see the players in action.
“Four players from Repton High School will play: Hugh Wilson III, Tommy Watson, James Watson III and Greg Simpson.”
“The Sparta Quarterback Club’s annual Athletic Banquet honoring athletes in all sports will be held Friday night at 7:30 o’clock in the Sparta Academy Gymnasium.
“Tommy Neville, former all SEC lineman at Mississippi State and All pro offensive lineman for the New England Patriots, will be the featured speaker. Neville is a businessman now and lives in his hometown of Montgomery. He was recognized as an outstanding competitor and leader during his playing days.”
“Sixteen-year-old boys whose 17th birthday is after Aug. 1, 1981 are being made eligible to play baseball this summer in the Evergreen Junior Baseball League. This is essential in rounding out the Major League team rosters.”

“Senior League sets meeting Friday night: A meeting for all persons interested in the Evergreen Senior Baseball League will be held Friday night at seven o’clock at the Courthouse. Parents of boys who plan to play and others interested in the league are urged to attend this meeting.

“Flat Rock Rockets Blast Centerville Nine 12 To 5: The Flat Rock Rockets blasted the Centerville Rookies 12 to 5 Sunday afternoon in a Conecuh Amateur League game. Huston Barlow was the winning pitcher. His battery mate was Winston Bailey. James Andrews pitched for Centerville with Clayton Barlow catching.”
“Black Sox Team Opens Season With Atmore: The Evergreen Black Sox Colored baseball team will open its 1951 season with a game in Brooks Stadium, Evergreen, against Atmore Sunday afternoon May 13 at 3 p.m.
“The Evergreen team is supported by principal O.F. Frazier of the Conecuh County Training School and will be managed by Coach John W. Kennedy of C.C.T.S. and Leon Randolph. Other officers of the club are Al East, president and Wilson Moore, vice president.
“The team has been equipped with new uniforms, bats, balls and other equipment. The roster will be made up of several veteran players along with some younger talent. Henry Randolph, the ace pitcher for many years, will do the pitching while Charlie Frank Sasser will receive. Percy King, Mike Cheatham, ‘Two Bits’ Jones, L. Randolph, J.W. Kennedy, Scott, McMillan and O.F. Frazier will be among the starters for Sunday’s game.”
