This past Saturday’s slate of college football games wrapped up our annual ESPN College Football Pick ‘Em contest, and Johnny Davis claimed this year’s “Mr. Football” title by finishing in first place.
During the 14-week contest, Davis collected 564 total points by correctly picking the winners of 97 out of 140 football games. That’s almost 70 percent, which isn’t bad when it comes to picking the outcomes of college football games.
Hunter Norris finished in second place with 562 total points, and Jacob Ramer came in third with 557 total points. Sharon Peacock came in fourth with 554 points. Aaron Albritton and Jeremy Matheny were tied for fifth place with 553 points each.
I finished seventh with 548 points, and Justin Jensen was eighth with 537 points. Morgan Middleton was ninth with 535 points, and David Price came in tenth with 533 points.
The Alabama High School Athletic Association football championship games will be played today (Thursday) and tomorrow (Friday) at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn and more than a few great games are on tap in these state title contests.
Teams from Southwest Alabama in the finals include Brantley High School (1A), Washington County High School of Chatom (2A), UMS-Wright of Mobile (4A) and Spanish Fort High School (5A). Undefeated teams in the finals include Brantley (14-0), 2A Tanner (13-0), 4A Oneonta (14-0), 5A McAdory (14-0) and 6A Hoover (14-0).
In today’s slate of games, Madison Academy (12-2) will play Fayette County (12-2) in the 3A title game at 11 a.m. Brantley will play Marion County (13-1) at 3 p.m. in the 1A title game. Spanish Fort (13-1) will play McAdory in the 5A title game at 7 p.m.
Tomorrow, UMS-Wright (12-2) will play Oneonta in the 4A title game at 11 a.m. Tanner will play Washington County (13-1) in the 2A title game at 3 p.m. Hoover will play Opelika (10-4) in the 6A title game at 7 p.m.
I look for Brantley to win in 1A, and for Washington County to pick up the 2A title. The Class 3A title game looks to be a good one, and I predict that Fayette County will come out on top. In Class 4A, I expect UMS-Wright to get the win, and for Spanish Fort to win in 5A. Hoover will probably win the 6A title over Opelika, which has already suffered four losses this season.
Thanks to their big win over Georgia in the SEC title game last Saturday, the Alabama Crimson Tide is now set to play Notre Dame in the BCS title game on Jan. 7 in Miami.
Notre Dame’s got a good team this year, but I don’t know if they’re good enough to hang with Alabama. With over a month to heal up and prepare for the Fighting Irish, Nick Saban will have his team ready to deal with whatever Notre Dame can dish out. Of course, only time will tell, but I like Alabama’s chances of picking up their 15th national title.
