100-year-old news highlights from The Wilcox Progressive Era


What follows are 100-year-old news excerpts from the Sept. 12, 1918 edition of The Wilcox Progressive Era newspaper in Camden, Ala.

We are informed that the principal of the Camden Academy, W.G. Wilson, proposes to give a part of the school term each week for the purpose of allowing the students to help gather in the harvest in and around the vicinity. The students of course will be organized into groups and the work done under a systematic direction.

King Pharr of Catherine, Ala. has been elected president of the Southern Sweet Potatoes Canners Association at the annual meeting of the association in New Orleans. Ralph Quisenberry of Montgomery is the outgoing president, having been head of the association throughout the past year.

The Wilcox County High School begun this year’s session on Tuesday morning last. Devotional exercises were led by Rev. H.W. Wallace and talks were made by Mr. E.W. Berry and Prof. Hardy. A solo by Miss Mary Charles O’Neal was effectively rendered.

Rev. I.N. Kimbrough, after almost seven years as pastor of Camden Baptist Church, announced to his congregation last Sunday morning that he is expecting to be called into Army Y.M.C.A. service overseas in near future and will give up the pastorate of the church Oct. 1. The church will take action on the resignation at the business meeting to be held Thursday night, the 12th.

Notice is hereby given that an election will be held in and for the Town of Camden, Ala. at the Courthouse on Monday, the 16th day of September 1918, same being the third Monday in September, for the purpose of electing a mayor and five councilmen for said town.

DEATH OF P.E. WALLACE: Wilcox County was shocked to hear of the sudden death of Hon. P.E. Wallace at his home in Ackerville on Saturday last. He had apparently been in his usual good health, and his death came about the noon hour of heart trouble.
Mr. Wallace was well known and popular in Wilcox and adjoining counties. He had served as a member of the County Board of Revenue and as a member of the Equalization Board. He was a men of good business judgement, well-poised and with an affable and agreeable personality.
Mr. Wallace was a consistent member of the Baptist church and a Mason. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. I.N. Kimbrough of the Camden Baptist Church and interment was made Sunday with Masonic honors. A large concourse paid the last respects to the mortali of the deceased and attested the esteem in which he was held.

The enrollment of the grammar school has reached the 120 mark.

Earl Bryant, who has been in training in the aviation school at San Antonio, Texas, is now in London attached to King George’s Aero Squadron.

Dr. E.G. Donald of Pine Apple was a business visitor to Camden on Tuesday.

Dr. W.P. Roberts of McWilliams attended the meeting of the Council of Defense on Monday.
