Placing the memorial: The centerpiece of the Uriah Veterans Memorial was set last week, placing the finishing touches on the project. Hammer Construction lifted the monument into place. There was also a motorcycle ride last weekend, with approximately 100 bikers donating money for lunch Saturday.

Excel wins Leroy tourney – No. 9 ranked Lady Panthers improve record to 20-2: Apparently Excel’s Lady Panthers stored a lot of desire and determination over the past couple of weeks, and they unloaded that surplus last weekend in Leroy.
Excel marched through the Leroy High Invitational undefeated, winning five games over two days to win the tournament championship.
In the title game, the Panthers got an RBI triple from Claire Jordan to drive in Morgan Agerton in the bottom of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie and give the Panthers a 4-3 win (over Leroy).
(Other standout Excel players included Courtney Addison, Lauren Anderson, Alycia Baggett, Deanna Henderson, Amy Hudson, Kayla Jordan, Kristen Lassiter, Kelsey Ledkins and Mikalya Nall. Charlotte Wiggins was head coach, and Sam Hollingsworth Jr. was assistant coach.)

Peddlin’ for a Cure founder Fred Kelley has his sights set on $1 million for cancer research and with the sixth annual ride this Friday he and 200-or-so cyclists stand a good chance at making another stride in that direction.
To date Peddlin’ has raised over $600,000 for Relay for Life of Monroe County with $160,000 through the fifth ride to the Battleship USS Alabama, and this year’s trip will wind up at Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile.

Up with the outlets: The steel framework for the Monroeville Outlet Center is going up on Drewry Road. The first phase is expected to have about 12 stores. The entire complex will have six buildings when all phases are completed.

Tigers destroy Robertsdale 12-3: A six-game losing streak bit the dust Saturday when Monroe County High’s Tiger baseball team demolished Robertsdale High here 12-3.
The victory, which left the Tigers 4-6 on the season and 1-1 in the area standings, properly christened the new baseball diamond at MCHS.
Monroe County High rode to victory over the 5A Area 3 visitors from Baldwin County behind the pitching and hitting of junior Mark Williams and senior Jeff Dyess.
(Other top MCHS players in that game included Michael Malone, William Moseley, Michael Rankins, Greg Tucker and Andy Wilkerson. Mike Kimberl was MCHS’s head coach.)

Construction to start soon on fire station in Frisco: Southern General Contractors of Monroeville was the low bidder on construction of a new Frisco City fire station during the Town Council’s regular meeting Monday night.
Southern General submitted a bid of $64,700. Construction on the new building should begin in two weeks, said (Mayor Ronnie Ray). The new fire station will have more room for trucks and equipment. Site preparation has already been performed.

Steve Stewart was named winner of the Monroe County spelling bee held Friday at Monroe County High School and will attend the state finals in Birmingham Sat., May 12.
A sixth-grader at the Monroeville Elementary School, Steve is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Stewart of Monroeville.
Placing second was Pamela Andress, also a sixth-grader at the Monroeville Elementary School.

Monroeville Wins 11-4 in First Game: Monroe County High School was victorious in its opening baseball game of the season Tuesday afternoon when the Tigers defeated Grove Hill 11-4.
Jimmy Wible was Monroeville’s winning pitcher and the leading hitter with two hits out of three times at bat. Kenneth Gall was the lead run scorer with three runs.

Bids on construction of the new Monroe County courthouse are still under advisement this week, and no contract has been awarded, said E.T. Millsap, probate judge.
The bids were taken by the County Court of Commissioners Thursday afternoon, March 29, and Judge Millsap said it looks as through S.J. Curry & Co. of Albany, Ga. is the lowest bidder. The Curry Co. made a base bid of $403,300.

Gregg Norris, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lavon Norris, celebrated his sixth birthday anniversary at the Municipal Park in Frisco City Saturday afternoon, March 31. The cake was decorated in pink and white and featured a cowboy and horse in a corral. Refreshments were served to David Skinner, Billy Joe McKinley, Mitch and Mike Norris, Ranae Hendrix, Robin Brooks, Paula Dean, Ronnie Lambert, Claudia and Sharon Jordan, Harvey and LaDon Ikner.

Wind And Rain Storms Strike County Monday: Practically every section of Monroe County was visited by wind and rainstorms early Monday morning and reports from other sections of South Alabama showed winds of cyclonic intensity visited this territory during that period.
Before daylight Monday morning, the bad weather struck Monroeville and continued for several hours. Heavy rains fell during the time and frequent thunder and lightning accompanied the rain.

“Shorty” Gets Turkey: County Agent A.V. Culpepper returned Tuesday morning from a turkey hunt very much pleased with himself and the 18-3/4 pound turkey gobbler which he brought home as evidence of his hunting skill.

Highest Honors For Monroeville Boy: Armistead R. Harper of Monroeville was elected last week to Scabbard & Blade, national military fraternity, at Alabama Polytechnic Institute. This honor is the highest which can be accorded an Auburn student and goes only to those who possess high distinction in military affairs, character and leadership, and who have attained honors in extra-curricular activities.

Car Crashes Into Telephone Pole: A new coupe belonging to Arthur Lambert was badly damaged some time before day Friday when it crashed into two telephone poles in the “Y” in front of the H.G. Brantley store. The driver of the machine escaped without injury. One of the poles struck by the automobile was split into three parts and the telephone line injured to the extent that service south of that point was delayed for several hours.

Rev. E.E. Cowan’s kitchen caught fire Monday night, but fortunately it was discovered and extinguished before much damage was done.

A most unwarranted assault was made upon Dr. H.C. Bradley of River Ridge last week by his nephews, George McCall and Fred Bradley, who, it is said, injured him very seriously. His recovery is not assured.

Dr. R.I. Draughon of Perdue Hill will deliver a lecture at the Court House on Wednesday night (27th) of court week on subject of the “Creation of the World.” A large audience would be well paid for their attendance.

Col. P.D. Bowles has been appointed by the president as postmaster at Evergreen, vice, Mrs. John Stearns, deceased.

DIED – Mr. A.B. Tucker, an old and respected citizen of this community, died at his home near Monroeville on Tuesday, the 12th inst., of paralysis.

Editor J.A. Matheson has sold the Wilcox Gazette outfit to a stock company composed of some of Camden’s best young businessmen, who will shortly begin the publication of the Wilcox Progress. They promise to make the new journal indicative of its name. We wish the new paper and publishers much success.

Capt. W.S. Wiggins went to Mobile last Sunday via Claiborne.

Mr. Frank Boone and Miss Bettie Dees were married at the residence of the bride’s father near Mt. Pleasant on the evening of the 7th inst.
