After a very slow defensive battle in the first half that left the count knotted 14-14 at the half, Castleberry’s Blue Devils turned the heat on and breezed past Repton, 45-33, to take the Conecuh County Basketball Championship for the third consecutive year and coin permanent possession of the trophy. There was no tournament held last year, but Castleberry was awarded the championship by a vote of the county principals based on records of intra-county play. The trophy was given by the Conecuh County Teachers Association three years ago to be presented to the county champions each year, and the first school to win the championship three consecutive years would have permanent possession of the trophy.
Castleberry and Repton placed two men each and Evergreen one on the all-county team. Booker and Jernigan for Castleberry; Giles and Brantley for Repton; and (Shirley) Frazier for Evergreen made up the first team. Lyeffion had two, Booker and Brock; Castleberry two, Daw and Heaton; and Evergreen one, (Billy) Lewis, on the second team. Those gaining honorable mention were Kearly and Kelly, Repton; White and Alexander, Evergreen; and Coker, Lyeffion.
