Aggie baseballers open April 10: The Evergreen Aggie
Baseball team will play a 13-game season this year. All of the home games will
start at 3:30 and will be on WBLO radio.
For the past two weeks, 13 boys have been working on their
own to prepare for the season opening game against Miller. After football
practice, they will be joined by nine other players.
Prospects were lowered slightly when four veterans of last
year’s 8-9 team decided not to play this year. Only time will tell if there is
enough new talent to overcome this.
Lettermen returning are as follows: Larry Wright, Homer
Faulkner, Grover Jackson, Bobby Jernigan, Forrest Simpson, Wayne Caylor, Tommy
Weaver and Jerry Johnson. Other players include Jimmy Brown, Bill Bailey, Jack
White, Don Montgomery, Bill Kundo, Wayne Hicks, Tommy Chapman, Wayne Hammonds,
Harold Hamiter, Leon Hinson, Stanley Mitchell, Lavon Tolbert, Johnny Fountain
and Ed Smith.

Monroeville; April 14, at Greenville; April 19, at Georgiana; April 21, v.

Four Evergreen boys spent their AEA holidays on a canoe trip
down Sepulga River. Leaving Travis Bridge Tuesday afternoon, Moreno White, John
Croft, Rusty Price and Glenn Bolton packed their gear and supplies in two
canoes and headed down the river. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights,
campsites were made by the side of the river on sandbars and one night on a
high hill overlooking the river.
Although the fishing was not plentiful, they discovered
several freshwater springs pouring from solid rock cliffs. Other than running
the rapids and going over waterfalls, the current of the river carried them
along at a fairly steady pace. They went swimming several times and decided
that an ice-cold bath was better than none at all.
Moreno has been down the river three times, John and Rusty
twice and this trip was Glenn’s “maiden voyage.” From Travis Bridge to McGowin
Bridge is approximately 36 miles by water and when they were picked up on
Friday afternoon, each vowed that next time they would take more food. Now they
are anxiously awaiting another chance to run-the-river.
