Pro football coming to
Evergreen: Some 30 men, weighing anywhere from 190 pounds to over 300 pounds,
are working hard in Evergreen to bring minor league professional football to
the city.
“It’s hard for these guys to
juggle their jobs with practice, but they’re willing to pay the price,” said
Victor Calhoun, who doubles as the Evergreen Jaguars’ head coach and team
owner.
Calhoun, who played
professional football for the St. Louis Cardinals, has worked even harder to
build a foundation for this program.
Evergreen, a team consisting
of players from Evergreen, Castleberry, Brewton, Flomaton, Andalusia, Bratt,
Fla. and Century, Fla., will play the Port City Monarchs at 7:30 p.m. in Mobile
June 17 to kick off the preseason.
A month later, on July 15,
Evergreen will play its regular season against the Bayou Vipers at Hillcrest
High School in Evergreen at 7:30 p.m.
Calhoun had 21 players at
Tuesday’s practice and said he is looking to add more.
Holder is named to AHSAA
all-star basketball team: Hillcrest High School’s 6-5 forward Justin Holder and
59 other outstanding junior basketball players from all over the state have
been named to the North-South all-star teams.
Holder and his South
teammates will compete in the 10th Annual All-Star Sports Week
competition in Huntsville July 10-14.
Holder helped guide the
Jaguars to the Class 4A state championship in March under the direction of head
coach Tommy Dukes.
