“A good time was had by all, especially the children, at the first annual party of Evergreen Textiles, Inc. employees. The party held at the Evergreen Recreation Center attracted approximately 300 people, employees and their immediate families. During the morning bingo games were played with prizes being donated by local merchants. The children also enjoyed games, such as the sack race which this group was lining up to play. At noon, a barbecue lunch was served.”

“BOY SCOUT NEWS: Last Saturday on their return from a week’s stay at Camp Big Heart (Pensacola), not one of the eight scouts or their scoutmaster had to be forced to confess that they had had a wonderful time.
“The scoutmaster was Mr. ‘Mac,’ the eight scouts were: Bobby Johnston, Frank Johnston, Temple Millsap, Dewey Brantley, Floyd Coker, Thomas Coker, Gwynn Daniels and George Kelly.
“Swimming, fishing, rowing, playing and eating were the main items on the menu, with plenty of each. This was spiced up with a couple of trips to Pensacola Beach, Stunt Night, and one or two games of ‘Pioneers and Indians.’
“One of the most enjoyable features of the camp was the tough but friendly rivalry which developed between Troop 40 and Troop 28 from Fort Walton. It was a close race all the way both in Cabin Inspection and Table Inspection. However, they were such a swell bunch of scouts that we hated to beat them (our version of the tale), so we tied them instead – for top honors in both contests. We were glad it came out that way; the contest with them was truly a scouting proposition.
“We were also proud to take third place in the water carnival which was held Thursday, visitors’ day.
“At our regular meeting on Tuesday night, Troop 40, was proud to make application for the Eagle Badge for two of our Scouts, who had completed all requirements for this coveted badge.
“Leonard Price Jr. and George Kelly were the new Eagles.
“All scouts of Troop 40 are to meet next Tuesday P.M. at 6:30 at the Lone Star Station for a trip to Binion’s Pool. Scout Chris Walker will furnish watermelon for the occasion.
“(Signed) George Hendricks, Troop Scribe.”

“Boy Scouts Enjoy Week’s Annual Camp: The annual District Council Camp for Boy Scouts was held at the Scout Camp seven miles from Brewton last week with a total of 64 scouts from the troops at Brewton, Evergreen, Atmore, Uriah, Peterman and Monroeville participating. The camp was under the direction of Rev. C.P. Rigler, assisted by Messrs. Murphy and Barron of Brewton and Prof. M.A. Hanks of Evergreen.
“The nine scouts attending from the Evergreen troop were: Cyrus Wells, John D. Wright Jr., Harry Webster, William McGehee, Oswald Hansen, Gene Cargill, Mac Binion, Emera Kingsberry and David Dreaden.
“The entire week was given over to scout work including passing tests on first aid, hiking, scout pace, handicraft, carpentry, personal and public health, tracking, swimming. The boys had lots of fun and learned many valuable lessons in scout work. Local boys who participated in the camp came home with much more enthusiasm for scouting than ever before and it is safe to say that by the time next year’s camp comes there will be at least twice as many boys ready and anxious to take part.
“The Red Cross life saving test was successfully passed by a number of the scouts including the following from Evergreen: John D. Wright, Harry Webster, William McGehee, Gene Cargill and Mac Binion.
“A camp is being held this week for the Rangers, boys under scout age, at the same place. It is also under the direction of Rev. Rigler. A number of boys from here are attending.”
