“Hillcrest’s Jarvis Holder and Sparta Academy’s Will Ivey are The Courant’s Players of the Week. Holder scored two touchdowns and rushed for 96 yards last Friday in Hillcrest’s 46-0 win over R.C. Hatch in Evergreen. He is a 5-8, 160-pound junior. Ivey, a 6-foot, 160-pound senior, rushed for 84 yards on nine carries and scored two touchdowns in Sparta’s loss to Ft. Dale last Friday in Evergreen.”

“Hillcrest enjoyed one of those season openers like coaches love to draw up on the chalkboard last Friday when the Jaguars mule stomped R.C. Hatch, 46-0, in Evergreen.
“Head coach Arlton Hudson summed up his team’s efforts by stating that the Jaguars scored in just about every way possible.”
Standout Hillcrest players in that game included Brandon Bullock, Aaron Dees, Jarvis Holder, Clarence Jackson, Quentin Lee, Derel Simpson and Jeremy Thomas.

“Sparta Academy’s offense broke the ice last Friday when the Warriors put 14 points on the scoreboard in a 46-14 loss to Fort Dale Academy in Evergreen.
“Senior Will Ivey, a six-foot, 160-pound quarterback, who was named The Courant’s Co-Player of the Week, accounted for both touchdowns.
“He finished the evening with 84 yards on nine carries, scoring on runs of 15 and 39 yards. He also completed a three-yard conversion pass to Hunter Hutcheson.”
Other standout Sparta players in that game included Chase Brown, Jacob Burch and Tony Raines.

“County coaches meet, organize: The coaches of Conecuh County’s high schools met Aug. 26 in Repton and organized the Conecuh County Coaches Association. These officers were elected: President, Patton Brown; Vice President, Roy ‘Buddy’ Davis; and Secretary-Treasurer, Ronnie Brogden.
“During the meeting plans were discussed for selecting all-county teams in football, basketball, track and baseball. The players so honored would be selected by the coaches based on their contributions to their teams.
“Plans were also discussed to hold basketball tournaments for both varsity and ‘B’ teams. The tournaments will be played at Conecuh County High School, Castleberry, the last week in January.
“The next meeting will be on Nov. 12 at Mabry Covin’s Plantation.”

“These cheerleaders will be cheering the Evergreen High Aggies on toward victory when the local team meets W.S. Neal here Friday night at Brooks Stadium in its first home game. They are Renee Sherman, Lisa Armstrong, Linda Padgett, Pam Dawson, Callie Ray, Evelyn Johnson, Selinda Williams and Susan Harper.”

“Sparta Warriors lose to GA 13-6: The Sparta Academy Warriors took a 6-0 lead into the dressing room at halftime, but could not hold off a big, strong Greenville Academy Tornado club in the final two periods and lost the opener for both schools 13-6 here Saturday night before a large crowd.
“The Tornadoes took the opening kickoff and commenced a steady drive that seemed certain to lead to points. However, the Sparta defense stiffended inside the 20 and Greg Still picked off a pass and returned it some 30 yards to start the Warriors to their only score. Jerry Peacock broke loose on a sweep around right end behind good blocking and raced 33 yards for the score. The extra point run was stopped.
“Sparta was hobbled by several injuries including Walker Scott, one of the state’s leading rushers last year, who played on a sprained ankle. Peacock was the leading rusher with 58 yards. Bobby Johnson had 37; Scott, 21; and Andy Skipper, four.
“Woody Register topped the defense with five solo tackles and one assist. Joe Andrews and Peacock had five solos and Freddie Sellers, four. Sam Wiggins had three solos and three assists and Still, three solos and one assist.”

“Aggies Open Season With Atmore Devils Here Next Friday: Coach Wendell Hart’s 1960 edition of the Evergreen High School Aggies, his 15th, will knock the top off of the season here next Friday night, Sept. 9.
“As usual, the Aggies face a powerful foe in the opener as they take on the always tough Atmore Blue Devils.
“Coach Hart opens this season short-handed and minus his valuable assistant, Line Coach Jeff Moorer. Coach Moorer accepted a position as line coach at Pensacola High School a week before practice began.
“Hart, the veteran Aggie mentor now in his 15th season, has called on a former assistant, John Law Robinson to fill the breech. Robinson is a full-time cattleman now, but has agreed to help with the Aggies until an assistant coach can be signed up. Both Robinson and Moorer played under Hart when they starred at EHS a few years back.
“Coach Hart is typical of veteran football coaches, never an optimistic word to the press, but he’s crying the blues less loudly this year than he has in recent seasons.”

“The Evergreen Quarterback Club will hold its first regular meeting of the 1960-61 year tonight at 7:30 at Evergreen High School, according to QB President John Raines.
“Membership Chairman Pace Bozeman said that about 40 persons have already mailed in their dues. The club set a goal of 150 to 200 members for the year. Any person who has not mailed his dues of $3 should do so as soon as possible, so the membership drive will not be drawn out into the football season.”
