“Charlie King and Eugene ‘Bam’ Nevlous were named as the Hillcrest High School Jaguar players of the week. King, Defensive Player of the Week, had five tackles and one quarterback sack. Bam, Offensive Player of the Week, had 94 yards rushing and 12 knockdown blocks.”
“The Sparta Academy Warriors opened their 1996 football season with a big win against the Monroe Academy Volunteers 20 to 6 on Aug. 30.
“Michael Pate led the Warriors with 175 yards rushing on 17 carries. Pate also scored two touchdowns. Lyle Bell had 116 yards on 13 carries and one touchdown and Rod McIntyre had 20 yards on five carries. “Rod McIntyre was one of four in the passing department for six yards. Chris Kervin had the only reception for six yards.”
“Warrior miscues lead to 30 to 19 loss to Tornados: The Sparta Academy Warriors dropped their record for the 1996 season to one and one at the hands of the Greenville Academy Tornados last Friday night at Stuart-McGehee Field.
“The Warriors got on the board first when Michael Pate ran the ball in from eight yards out in the first quarter. Justin Brown kicked the PAT to make the score 7 to 0.”
Other standout Sparta players in that game included Joey Brewton, Lee Goodwin, Clifford Herbest, Seth McIntyre and Charlie Ward.

“Neal’s Eagles rip Aggies 42-3: The Evergreen Aggies lost their first game of this young season as the W.S. Neal Blue Eagles trounced the Aggies 42-3 here last Thursday night.
“Evergreen scored their only points of the game when Deatrich Wise kicked a 37-yard field goal with 1:58 left in the third quarter.
“Leading the way for the Aggies on defense most of the night was Barry Padgett with seven solos and nine assists.
“Other top defenders were Max Cassady with five and eight; James Lee, six and three; Tracy Hawsey and Kenny Rankins with four and four each; Tim Mims, three and five; and Deatrich Wise with four and three.”
“Cougars blank Warriors 21-0: The Sparta Academy Warriors traveled to Luverne on Friday night and absorbed their second loss of the young season as Crenshaw Academy’s Cougars threw a 21-0 shutout.
“Mike Mixon picked up 53 yards on 11 carries and Ed Carrier 34 on 13 tries to account for most of Sparta’s attack. Joey Johnson had 10 yards on four runs while Dewan Salter was sacked for a loss of nine.
“Carrier completed four of five passes for 31 yards and Mixon one of two for eight yards while Salter connected on two for a loss of two and was intercepted once. Al Ethridge led the receivers with three catches for 25 yards while Johnson caught one for eight and Mixon two for five.”
Other standout Sparta players in that game included Scotty Grace, Russ Raines, Scott Lawrence, Trent Carrier, Wes Brown, Thad Ellis and Mike Wilson.
“The Monroeville Telephone Company women’s team took first place in the regular season Monroe County Softball Association and second in the playoffs. The team also played in several tournaments and placed in each one. Members of the team are, from left, kneeling, Lisa Sawyer, Sondra Stabler, Denise Ryland, Betty Chandler, Eva Smelley, Donna Watson and Eraena McKenzie; standing, Bobbi Crum, Rita Baggett, Glenda Broughton, Barbara Ridgeway, Ann Curry, Brenda Taylor and coach Johnny Ridgeway. “Aggies open ’66 season with Atmore tonite at 8: Hopeful of better days, the 1966 edition of the Evergreen High Aggies takes to the field tonight to open the season. Their traditional rivals, the Atmore Blue Devils, come to town for the eight o’clock kickoff in Brooks Stadium.
“Coach Cliff Little and Assistant Coach Perry Outlaw have been working for about three weeks with a varsity squad of some 26 or 27 players readying for the season.
“Quarterback Homer Faulkner is expected to be one of the better passers in this area with a year’s experience under his belt.
“The team elected captains at a meeting this week. Harold Hamiter, guard and linebacker, was named captain. Co-captains are Faulkner and Glenn Bolton.
“He (Coach Little) listed the following probably starting lineup: left end, Ed Smith, 150; left tackle, Forrest Simpson, 150; left guard, Bubba Mininger, 141; center, Rusty Price, 187; right guard, Harold Hamiter, 151; tackle, Larry Windham, 161; right end, Jack White, 147; quarterback, Homer Faulkner, 187; left halfback, Glenn Bolton, 164; right halfback, Jimmy Bell, 143; fullback, Elliott (Buck) Qualls, 157.
“Defensive specialists are linebacker, George Stinson, 153; halfback, Don Montgomery, 143; and middle guard, Roger Waller, 161.”

“The Evergreen High School Aggies will stage the grand opening of the 1951 football season here Friday night at 7:30 in Brooks Stadium with a scrapping band of Millry High Wildcats furnishing plenty of opposition. For the Aggies it will be the opener of a tough 10-game slate and the start of their sixth season under Coach Wendell Hart.
“Coach Hart and his new assistant, Line Coach Spencer Davis, sent their charges through a spirited scrimmage season Wednesday afternoon with the cry ‘Beat Millry’ ranging over the turf of the stadium.
“The line will be under the able direction of Capt. Donahue Edson. Capt. Edson, a 155-pound sparkplug at guard, will back the line on defense.
“Quarterback Gillis (Little Red) Morgan will run the offense. Red is alternate captain of the team for the second season. A senior, the 145-pounder is ably qualified for his signal-calling role with two years as a starter in the position under his belt. He has been handling the ball smoothly, making the offense purr like the motor of an expensive car. He’ll do the passing and can throw strikes with the pigskin.
“Coach Davis will start a pair of 150-pounders at the ends. Shirley Frazier is probably the best blocker on the team and can grab passes as well as go on the end around. Lerton Chambers, a lanky transfer from Mississippi, was a guard last season but looks at home at the other terminal.
“At the tackles, it’ll be Sam Cope and Wayne (Dog) Douglas. Big Sam was a starter last year and his 200 pounds make him plenty tough on defense. “Capt. Edson will handle one guard spot in good fashion. The other will be filled by Bill Robinson, a 126-pound package of dynamite.”
Other players on Evergreen’s team that year included Ward Alexander Jr., James Andrews, James Ansley, Wayne Bell, Pace Bozeman, Gwyn Daniels, Edward Evers, Jimmy Frazier, John Fussell, Danny Golson, Paul Hanks, Billy Lewis, Sammy Robison and Joe Stowers.

“CLEVELAND… 17-year-old Bob Feller, Iowa farm boy, is the newest baseball pitching sensation in the American League. In his major league debut, he struck out 15 Stlooey Browns, allowed only six hits and one run, to win for Cleveland. He stands six feet and weighs 175 pounds. ‘The speediest since Walt Johnson,” say experts.”
“Century Plays Here Next Sunday Afternoon: Century meets the local team here next Sunday afternoon in what may be the deciding game as to who will play the local aggregation in the playoff series. Atmore and Century are neck and neck for first place in the second half. Games which will be played Thursday of this week and next Sunday will determine which of these two teams will win. Evergreen has no game scheduled for this Thursday.
“In the event the issue between Century and Atmore is decided by Sunday, series between Evergreen and one or the other of these teams will begin Thursday of next week.
“Fans are urged to attend the game here next Sunday afternoon, which will be a hard fought contest because of its great importance in the final outcome of the playoff.”
