1919 Buick H45 Touring car. |
What follows are 100-year-old news excerpts from the Dec. 12,
1918 edition of The Monroe Journal newspaper in Monroe County, Ala.
Pvt. L.S. Biggs has received his discharge from the service
of his country and is at home with relatives at Peterman.
Having been discharged from military service, Mr. Jesse
Arant arrived in Monroeville Monday and will spend several days with friends,
after which he will return to Birmingham.
The Morrissette Motor Co. received their first 1919 model
Buick six last Saturday. While the car was on display only an hour or two
before being sold many visitors stopped to admire its beauty and simplicity.
This new car has many improvements over the earlier models.
HIGH SCHOOL NEWS: On December the 7th, the Monroe
County High School boys went to play the Conecuh County High School boys, with
the following lineup: Ollie Black, center; James Hurt, forward; Hammond Grimes,
forward; Karl Kinney, guard; and Tom Andrews, guard. The Castleberry boys had
it on the MCHS boys in weight and experience, but had to fight hard to take the
game from us.
The ball went up in center and was tossed across the field
several times until it got into the hands of Black who put it in the ring. The
ball then went back to center, was knocked in play by Black and was played over
the field about five minutes before it went through the ring on Castleberry’s
end of the field. At that, a loud shout went up from our sideline, and we all
began to feel a little shakey. Two free goals were thrown by Hammond Grimes
when fouls were called on the Castleberry team. After about 20 minutes of fast,
hard playing, the first half ended with a score of 8 to 7 in favor of
Castleberry. Ten minutes intermission intervened between the two halves.
The last half began just as the 10 minutes was up, and the
ball went in play at center. After being in play about two minutes, Hammond
Grimes threw a goal, and another in a few minutes. The last quarter, Castleberry
got loose and put it in the ring four times. The game lasted about two minutes
longer and was called with a score of 18 to 11 in favor of the Conecuh County
High School.
Among the Monroe County boys who have been honorably
discharged from military service are: Capt. Earl Jones, Ralph Jones, Marcus
Adams, Nick Sawyer and Arthur McWilliams. We are glad to welcome these boys
back home and trust that all the boys will be returned to us in the near
future.
Death of Leslie Leo Bayles; On Thurs., Nov. 28, the death
angel visited Mr. and Mrs. Lee Bayles of Franklin and carried away their little
son, Leslie Leo. This little baby was spared four months to brighten their
home. The vacant place of Leslie Leo can never be filled again. The bright eyes
and sweet smiles of little Leslie Leo will never be forgotten. All that willing
hands and kind hearts could do was done for him, but we know God’s will be
done. Little Leslie Leo leaves father, mother and a host of relatives to mourn
his death. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved father and mother in their
hours of sadness. He was laid to rest in Spring Hill cemetery Friday, Nov. 29.
Mr. T.L. Griffin and Miss Lucy A. Stabler, both of Franklin,
were united in marriage in Monroeville on last Wednesday afternoon, Mr. G.C.
Dean, chief clerk in the Probate office, officiating. The contracting parties
have many friends throughout the county who wish them a happy life.
