What follows are 100-year-old news excerpts from the Dec. 18,
1918 edition of The Evergreen Courant newspaper in Conecuh County, Ala.
The regular quarterly meeting of Camp Capt. Wm. Lee, U.C.V.,
will be held on Jan. 1. A full attendance is desired. – J.T. Fincher,
Commander.
James J. Lee recently removed here with his family from
Range. They occupy the Cook place on Belleville Street. Mr. Lee is discharging
the duties of chief clerk in the probate office.
An airplane passed over Evergreen Monday afternoon going
south and yesterday three were sighted going in an easterly direction.
Christmas Carol will be given at Mt. Union School on
Saturday night, Dec. 21. Admission 25 cents. Everybody invited.
A concert will be given at Cedar Creek Schoolhouse on Friday
night, Dec. 20.
Lt. P.B. Skinner came home last week from Camp Shelby, Miss.
to spend a few days with his family at Belleville.
Byron Tisdale has been critically ill the past several days
but at this writing his condition is reported to be somewhat improved. His many
friends earnestly hope for his speedy recovery.
Eugene Powell has opened a soft drink and confectionary
business in the place formerly conducted by Farnham & Bailey. He is now
opening a choice stock of goods and will appreciate a share of the public
patronage.
T.A. Waller of Jackson was in the city yesterday for a few
hours.
W.L. Stallworth, who has been quite sick, is reported to be
steadily improving.
Rev. E.C. Moore and family reached here last week from
Montgomery and are occupying the district parsonage. Rev. Mr. Moore was
assigned to this district as Presiding Elder by the recent session of the
Alabama Conference.
FAIRFIELD: Our school is progressing nicely under Miss Emmie
M. Pitts as principal.
Enoch Salter and family from Georgiana visited relatives
here Sunday. They were accompanied by their son, John, and his attractive young
wife, who was Miss Ruth Henderson, before her marriage to Mr. Salter.
We regret to say that Wiley House is very sick. We hope for
him a speedy recovery.
The many friends of Newton Yates are glad to know that he is
able to be out again after a lingering illness of six weeks.
We are glad to say our flu situation is improving.
Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Ryland and bright little son, Clifton,
visited their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Isham Nichols, this week.
LeVoy and Oscar Dean are making frequent visits in this
vicinity. Wonder what the attractions can be?
There will be a box supper at Fairfield School House Friday
night, Dec. 20. Everybody cordially invited to come.
