Evergreen weather observer Betty Ellis reported 0.1 inches of rain on Aug. 22 and 0.22 inches of rain on Aug. 24. She reported highs of 92 degrees on Aug. 22, Aug. 23, Aug. 26 and Aug. 27 and lows of 70 on Aug. 22, Aug. 25, Aug. 26 and Aug. 27.

Evergreen got a new landmark this week when Evergreen businessman Robbie Bolton had this new 60-foot flag pole erected on Wild Avenue, just down from the Rural Street intersection. Bolton, who had the pole erected on Friday, said he did so in honor of all first responders, including law enforcement officers, firefighters, ambulance workers and others.

Council Oks election results: The Evergreen City Council held a brief meeting at noon on Tuesday and officially approved the results of last week’s municipal election.
During Tuesday’s meeting at Evergreen City Hall, council members voted unanimously to approve a resolution that put the council’s official stamp of approval on the canvassing of the election results.
The council also unanimously approved certifications of election for Evergreen Mayor Pete Wolff and new District 5 councilwoman Elizabeth Davis, who were both winners in their respective elections.
Wolff, a two-time incumbent, defeated challenger Jimmy Taylor, and Davis, a former member of the council, defeated incumbent Maxine Harris.

Evergreen weather observer Harry Ellis reported 0.02 inches of rain on Aug. 26, 1.0 inches on Aug. 27, 0.13 inches on Aug. 30 and 0.85 inches on Aug. 31. He reported highs of 90 degrees on Aug. 28 and Aug. 29 and lows of 69 on Aug. 30, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1.

Representative Jimmy Warren presents a State of Alabama flag to Hillcrest High School principal Ronnie Brogden. The flag will be flown over the high school. Rep. Warren made the presentation last Friday.

Jerry Adams of Dairymen, Inc. presents the Alabama Council of Cooperatives distinguished cooperator award to James Cook of Evergreen, Rt. 1. The occasion was the 16th annual co-op couples conference at Gulf Shores. At right is Cook’s wife, Ann. Cook, a Conecuh County dairyman, who was cited for more than 30 years of serving a local cooperative. During this time, he has held leadership roles in Conecuh Exchange Co-op, Conecuh County Farmers Federation, dairy division of the Alabama Farmers Federation, Associated Dairy Producers and Dairymen, Inc.

Several cases of vandalism were reported in Evergreen and Lyeffion Tuesday morning. Seen above is where someone threw a bottle and a trash can through the windows of the Country Convenience store at Four Points.

SEPT. 1, 1966

That’s about as big a rattlesnake as you’ll see in these parts that Max Davis is holding up. The rattler measured six feet, three inches and had 18 rattlers and as you see was well fed. Max killed the serpent near Brooklyn.

County schools open Fall term next Wednesday: It’s back to school next Wednesday, Sept. 7, for pupils of Conecuh County schools. All county schools will open on that date, according to Harvey G. Pate, superintendent of education.
Pate said that the schools would only be open for a half day on Wednesday, but would begin full schedules Thursday with lunchroom to be open.

Lt. Col. Lee F. Smith presents second lieutenant bars to William E. Barbour of Mobile, who was officially commissioned during the summer encampment at Maxwell AFB. Col. Smith served as encampment commander. Cadet Lt. Col. Joseph R. Glass of the Evergreen Composite Squadron served as a cadet advisor.

Fall term of Court is now in progress: The Fall Term of Circuit Court began here Monday morning with the empaneling of the Grand Jury and the trial of cases on the Civil Docket. Cases are scheduled for trial through Friday. Trial of criminal cases will be held the week beginning Sept. 19.
Circuit Judge Robert E.L. Key is presiding over court.

SEPT. 4, 1941

Conecuh County Schools To Open Mon., Sept. 8: Everything is in readiness for the opening of all county schools next Mon., Sept. 8, according to Supt. H.D. Weathers. Elementary teachers met here yesterday and today to study the new course of study and plan their work for the coming year.
It is of especial interest to note this year that the County Board has purchased 19 new buses which are in every sense the newest and most modern that can be secured.

Henry Lewis Dies From Accident Injuries: While engaged in building a barn on his premises in the eastern edge of the city Wednesday afternoon, Henry Lewis sustained injuries from which he died about eight o’clock Wednesday night. According to reports, Lewis was caught beneath timber when the framing of the barn fell. He suffered a broken back and serious internal injuries. The accident occurred around four o’clock.

Aged Belleville Citizen Dies After Long Illness: After a period of failing health for the past two years, Mr. N.H. Fancher, well known and beloved citizen of Belleville, died at Birmingham Fri., Aug. 29. He was born Jan. 24, 1858, making him at the time of his death more than 83 years of age. He enjoyed the esteem and respect of all everywhere where he was known, and his passing was a source of sadness to them as well as to the members of his immediate family.
Funeral services were held at Belleville Methodist Church, of which the deceased was a member of the board of stewards, at 5 p.m., Aug. 31, with Rev. Andrews, the pastor, officiating.

105 YEARS AGO
SEPT. 2, 1914

Death of J.P. Anderson: John P. Anderson died on Thursday last at his home near Sparta following a lingering illness. He was one of the best known and most highly esteemed citizens of this county. He was about 70 years old.
The funeral occurred on Friday afternoon at Hampden Ridge being conducted by the Masonic lodge of Castleberry. A number of Masons and friends of deceased from Evergreen attended the funeral. Mr. Anderson was a member of the local camp Confederate Veterans.

The City school will open on Sept. 21.

ATTENTION K. OF P.’S: A special meeting has been arranged for Thursday night with a special program. Please be there and bring your neighbors.

Death of N.B. Jones: N.B. Jones died on Wednesday night last, Aug. 26, after eight weeks illness in the 73rd year of his age.
Deceased had been a well known and highly esteemed citizen of Evergreen for many years. He was postmaster here at one time and was for some years engaged in the mercantile business. In more recent years, he enjoyed the peaceful pursuit of farming.
When the war broke out, he enlisted as a private and served honorably throughout memorable conflict. He was an honored member of Camp Capt. Wm. Lee U.C.V.
The funeral occurred on Thursday afternoon from the late home of the deceased on Pecan Street, conducted by his pastor, Rev. W.T. Ellisor. The local Pythian Lodge conducted funeral rites at the grave.
