Hillcrest High School’s varsity football team saw itself
move up in the Class 3A football poll last week despite the fact that the Jags
hadn’t played a regular season game.
Hillcrest was ranked No. 5 in Class 3A in the first poll of
the season and thanks to a 21-0 season-opening loss by No. 4-ranked Bayside
Academy to St. James on Aug. 19, the Jags moved into the No. 4 spot when the
new statewide high school poll was released Wednesday of last week by the
Alabama Sports Writers Association.
Weaver piles up 116 yards: Sparta Academy’s Griffin Weaver
racked up a team-high 116 yards of total offense in his debut as the school’s
varsity quarterback as the Warriors fell to Wilcox Academy, 28-14, in their
season-opener Friday night at Stuart-McGehee Field in Evergreen.
Weaver, a senior, completed four of eight passes for a
team-best 62 passing yards, and he ran the ball eight times for a team-high 54
rushing yards. Sparta’s offense posted 192 yards against Wilcox, and Weaver
accounted for well over half of that amount, according to official game
statistics.
Hillcrest High School’s varsity football team, the No.
4-ranked team in Class 3A, suffered a 32-7 loss to Linden High School, the No.
2-ranked team in Class 1A, Friday night during Hillcrest’s season-opener at
Brooks Memorial Stadium in Evergreen.
Sophomore quarterback Ryan Nettles completed six of 13
passes for 167 yards and a touchdown, which prevented a shutout at the hands of
the senior-laden team from Linden.

defend their 1990 5A Area 3 championship. The championship chase begins Friday
night as the Jaguars play host to the Jackson Aggies at Brooks Memorial Stadium

winning attitude is keeping Head Coach H.L. Watson’s expectations high for the
year.

Brown, medalist and consolation winner, championship flight; David Hyde,
runner-up, first flight; Brown Boykin, winner, first flight; Charles Lambert,

Swimming pool opens at Carver: The new swimming pool at the
City of Evergreen’s Carver Recreation Center was opened to the public last
week. The pool was installed by the city at a cost of over $20,000. Completely
enclosed by an iron fence, the pool is the newest design and construction.
Due to the lateness of getting the pool open, the City has
decided to operate it so long as the weather permits. Large crowds have been at
the pool on Knoxville Road since it opened.
Mike Moorer won the Evergreen Golf Club’s membership
tournament defeating Hugh Ellington in the finals Sunday afternoon. Tournament
chairman Brown Boykin presents the championship trophy to Mike. Moorer got
ahead of Ellington with a one-under par 35 on the front nine and stayed in
front all the way.
Aggies at work with Atmore opener ahead: The practice pace
at Evergreen High School is picking up as the Aggies face the imminent season
kickoff with Atmore. The opening game is scheduled here at Brooks Stadium next
Thurs., Sept. 8, with kickoff at eight o’clock.
Coach Cliff Little and Assistant Coach Perry Outlaw have
been putting the boys through at a hard pace in order to try to get ready to
play in the limited time available. Some progress has been noticed this week.
Sideline observers have been impressed with the booming
punts of Homer Faulkner. The lanky quarterback hangs his kicks high in the sky
and sails them 60 and 70 yards downfield. His passing has also been impressive.
(Other players on Evergreen’s team that season included
Jimmy Bell, Glenn Bolton, Ronald Halford, Harold Hamiter, Jimmy Hamiter, Bubba
Mininger, Don Montgomery, George Murphy, Rusty Price, Elliott Quarles, Eddie
Ralls, Forrest Simpson, Ed Smith, Tim Stinson, Lavon Tolbert, Roger Waller,
Jack White, Moreno White and Larry Windham.)
