Last Saturday night’s slate of college football games
wrapped up Week Five of our local ESPN College Football Pick ‘Em Contest, and
we’re beginning to see more separation in the local standings as we get into
the October portion of the schedule.
This week’s local standings find Casey Grant in the No. 1
spot. On Saturday, he correctly picked the winners of nine out of the 10 games
in the contest, which is an “A” where I went to school. So far this season,
Casey has correctly picked the outcomes of 99.9 percent of the games in the
contest, so if you want to know who is going to win a game, Casey is the man to
ask. Chances are, he’ll be right.
Blake Stringer and Mark Cotten are in second place. Clint
Hyde is in fourth place, and Jesse Jordan is in fifth place. Drew Skipper and
Brett Loftin were tied for the No. 6 spot.
Cody Thomas, Arthur Ingram III and Justin Chandler were all
tied for eighth place. Austin Weaver and Travis Presley were tied for the No.
13 spot. I found myself in 15th place while Robert Bozeman and
Michael Bishop were tied for the No. 16 spot.

New Orleans fans had to stay up late on Sunday night to see
the Saints squeak by the previously unbeaten Dallas Cowboys, 12-10. New Orleans
scored all of its points off four field goals while injured quarterback Drew
Brees watched from the sidelines. Word around the campfire is that he will be
back sooner than later, which bodes well for the Saints as they try to make a
run at this season’s Super Bowl.
Backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has done pretty good in
the games he’s played, but he seems to be more of a game manager-type
quarterback. Every once in a while, the Saints coaches will stick third-string
quarterback Taysom Hill back there, and he seems to be more of an offensive
threat than Bridgewater. I suspect that Bridgewater gets the bulk of the
playing time because he’s seen as the quarterback of the future for New
Orleans, so they give him as many snaps as possible while Brees is out of
commission.

The Atlanta Braves wrapped up their regular season schedule
on Sunday, finishing the season with a 97-65 overall record and four games
ahead of the Washington Nationals in the final NL East standings. Washington
and Milwaukee were scheduled to play in the NL Wild Card game on Tuesday night,
and Oakland and Tampa Bay were scheduled to face off in the AL Wild Card game
yesterday (Wednesday). The winners of those games will advance to their
respective Division Series, which are scheduled to begin today (Thursday) and
tomorrow (Friday).
Other teams making the playoffs included the Minnesota
Twins, the New York Yankees and the Houston Astros in the American League while
the St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Dodgers made the cut in the National
League. Atlanta will face St. Louis in the Division Series, and while I want
the Braves to win it all, I don’t know if they’ve got the guns to compete with
the Dodgers.
In the end, only time will tell, but one thing is for sure:
We’ve got a lot of good baseball to look forward to.
